Strength:

lightweight, decent performance for the money, has held up to severe travel abuse without a shrug

Weakness:

the typical dropping zoom when hanging vertically although I've never really been bothered by it it does get a bit soft at full zoom -although no worse that its competition

Perfect for lightweight travel.I've kept one mounted on my minolta 7000i for a few years. It along with the additional speed of the 50mm1.7prime and the 3200i flash which I keep in a small bag in the trunk at all times has covered a myriad of great opportunities which have arisen at low cost.

Strength:

One stop lense. Great for taking into tight spots

Weakness:

Need to use something other than the built-in-flash

Good lense (there's better optics out there) but for snapshots 8x10' and zooms... its a great product.

Strength:

Very flexible zoom lens that covers just about all the ranges you'd ever need on an outing. Very nice build, easy to zoom, good macro range. Solid, dependable, works well w/o fuss.

Weakness:

If you're in Macro focusing range, it may be tough to zoom - you should focus on something far away to get it to go.
Well, it does weigh a pound.
AF will be slower using this lens vs. lighter zooms and fixed lenses.

A good lens with decent sharpness across all ranges. Not Leica 80-200mm sharp (an amazingly crisp zoom lens), but sharper than your usual P/S and good enough for the usual 8x10" blowups. The overall return of nice shots across all zoom ranges is evident from the many rolls shot at weddings and events, and the flexibility of 28-200 range means you never have to worry about swapping lenses or carrying another heavy camera bag.

It's the 'standard' lens of the 90s replacing the usual 50mm fixed from decades past, and a good first (and only) lens to start with if you don't mind the weight.

Brief resolution tests (informal) show 50-64 lp/mm center across the zoom range, and 35-50 lp/mm at the edges. Basically, a nudge better than a P/S camera, but lesser than a standard 50mm (50mm 1.8 canon MF showed 63-71 lp/mm center, 56 lp/mm edges).

Naturally, you can get lenses that are much higher resolution (eg. very expensive Leica 80-200) and P/S cameras that'll beat this lens (Yashica T4 $150, Olympus Stylus Epic $89, Ricoh GR1/GR10 $350, etc - hovering around 80-90 lp/mm center). But for 5x7" or smaller prints, more than acceptably sharp for me, IMO.

The flexibility is just amazingly nice to have despite slightly lower sharpness vs. prime lenses and zooms.

I'd buy one for every SLR I'd ever own to use as the primary do-everything lens, then think about what else to buy.

Strength:

Great range and nice feel (I have a manual focus model for my X-700). Wish I would have found the model with the macro built in though (having to use the macro filter is do able, but a nusance).

Weakness:

Wish it had a lock (like my new 28-300) to keep it from extending when the camera is pointing downwards.

A great lens, a nice starter for me. I'm enjoying the extended range on the newer 28-300, but 200mm was just fine while I was learning.

Customer Service

Never needed it.

Strength:

This lens has been on 3 continents with me. It is great for travel! I carry it for its light weight, versatility, and good image quality. I like the included lens shade, very effective (though built in flash on EOS will be cut off on the bottom edge of frame).

Weakness:

I don't like how the lens will creep when pointed downward.

Excellent travel or all purpose lens. Great close focus for this type of lens. Compact and easy to carry. Good results with this lens.

Customer Service

Strength:

All in one lens. No need to carry another lens around

Weakness:

- Kind of heavy
- 72mm size makes filters very expensive
- Kind of dark pictures
- Not very sharp

I returned my lens and exchanged it for a 28-105 and 100-300 sigma and I am happy with the picture quality. Tamron lens was just not sharp and the pictures I took, came out dark and with the Sigma lenses, they are perfect. I have a Minolta so I have to use the optional 3500xi to avoid vignetting on the long range shots.

Strength:

Sharp Picture, good for travel lens.
Price (cheap)

Weakness:

A little hard to turn for zooming (too stiff).
The ratio of focusing gear should be changed, because it turns too fast, little hard too focus when you use 120mm and above in quite close distance (below 20ft)

This lens is quit good for it's price. But I have a problem in focusing. The gear ratio between lens motor with focusing lens is too fast.

Strength:

Light, compact, very convenient when travelling light. Very sharp, though not as sharp between 28-80 as my Canon 28-80 USM. I use the lens almost exclusively for all situations.

Weakness:

Noisy! Dark through the viewfinder of my A2, slower than my Canon lenses.

I highly recommend this lens, especially if you like packing light.

Strength:

Nice all in one lens. Great for vacations. Allows you to capture a variety of shots without changing lenses.

Weakness:

A bit heavy. Autofocus a little clumsy sometimes. Vignetting when used on Canon with a pop up lens. Not as sharp as I hoped for.

I would buy this lens in a heartbeart if I were looking for a good lens at a good price to shoot anywhere in the range of vacation and family to casual hobby shots. It was a great first lens.

Strength:

Nice color and its pretty sharp.

Weakness:

Focus a little slow with N80 but still not bad.

I bought This lens as a Travel lens just to replace the Nikon 28-105. Even though the Nikon is a better lens, its for travel and I thought I might as well have a better focal length. I was surprised at the quality. I take a lot of pictures of my kids as a proud father does. The funny thing is out of all my pictures taken, everyone agrees the best one was taken with this lens.
