Strength:

Great optics Manual Focus is extremly smooth Solidly Built Fast silent focus, really silent!!!

Weakness:

Heavy Zoom is very very stiff at first

I recently purchased this lens from bigapplephoto. It is extremly solid and durable. The manual focus override is very smoothe. The optics are great but the filter size is huge, and an 86mm polarizer costs 100.00! The only problem is that the zoom is extremly stiff. At first a couldn't even turn it at all without turning the camera upside down. It gets better with more use though. Also the lens is very heavy but all lenses that are 500 mm are. Great lens!

Strength:

Unbelievable sharpness Nice contrast Great zoom range Built like a tank The price is right!

Weakness:

Weight Uses 86mm filters $$$$$ Weight Tripod mount Weight

Just got first 2 rolls of Kodak Royal Gold 200 developed. WOW, I am amazed. Razor sharp, great color balance, and excellent contrast even wide open at 500mm. Focuses as fast and almost as quiet as Canon USM lenses. Image quality beats the USM 100-300mm hands down. I also have a Sigma 135-400mm and this lens is 10 times sharper. Has a zoom lock. Also has full time manual focus. Focus feel and action is much improved over previous models. This lens is very well made which also means it is very big and heavy (4Lbs). Hand holding is a workout. Use of a monopod or tripod is almost manditory. The tripod mount feels slightly cheap and does not work as smoothly as others I've used. For those of us who can't afford to pop for the Canon 100-400mmL IS this lens is a great alternative. The Sigma's extra little bit of range comes in handy also!

Strength:

built like a tank, excellent optics, seems to be OK with a 2x converter, I use the kenko 7 elemnt -has anyone experience with the sigma 2x EX ????please e-mail me.perfect hood works well. Works OK with Dynax 7 -my sigma 28-70 EX had to be modified to work with this camera !

Weakness:

needs a monopod minimum to stabilise it, lens creeps forwards if inverted. 86mm circa pola = #125 uk

More praise for this lens, if it was a bit lighter, or I was a bit stronger I would only carry a 17-35 to go with it in my bag. See my recent pics with focal length details at : http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=933325&a=13804879

Strength:

Lens lock, the MF to AF collar, speed of the auto focus! Feel like a pro lens at half the cost and covers eveything from 50 to 500.

Weakness:

That it is a 86C lens, high dollars for filters, other than that none, other than everyone who see's you will want to start a 10 minutes conversation about your lens! Expect major lens envy for most others!

I have a tamron 28-105 and a Tamron 100-300 before I purchased the lens. I love this lens no more changing back and forth, now I just shoot shoot shoot all day long! I have some produced some fantastic pics with this lens, and to my suprise the nighttime shots are as good if not better than the daytime shots I take. I am now a true believer in Sigma, my next lens will be the 180 Macro!

Strength:

50-500mm zoom range
nice MF / AF focusing

Weakness:

corners of the image can look darker than the rest of the frame.
Zooms this long (500mm) usually need a tripod (it comes witht the territory)

For once Sigma hasn't aped a nikon / canon lens and has produced something quite cool - this is a great lens to impress friends and relatives.
I would have prefered a 100-500 lens.

Strength:

incredible zoom range,
built like a tank gun barrel,
optics seem great-nice contrast -no visible distortion (even on a x2 converter) if I had arms like Rambo probably the only lens I would ever use on a regular basis.
works well on a Kenko (7 element) x2 converter 1000mm zoom range -not too contrasty-why do I need 1000 mm zoom range -I have a hydraulic right leg !!?
autofocus works well with my minolta 800si
see the line of trees with the gate in the middle on my photo site as an example of the lens with converter

Weakness:

zooming back horizontally can be stiff-you need to invert the lens slightly to assist it, idosynchratic 'perfect hood' and of course 86mm filters -we are into cokin x-pro territory here ££££££
Had to wait a month for it to arrive.

If you can afford it -buy it- if not get closer to your subject. Work on your biceps and it may be the only lens you want to use. Also won TIPA award recently for best lens 2000.

Strength:

10X Zoom
200-1000mm with 2X teleconverter
Sturdy built
Reasonable price

Weakness:

Weight, heavy for travel light.
Aperture could be larger.

I use this lens on Nikon D1. With 1.5X factor, it gives me 75-750mm, F.4.5-6.3 under $1,000. Even with a 2X teleconverter, it turns out to be a truly 200-1000mm F/10-12 (300-1500mm on D1). How much you could expect to get at this focal length with any brand available? Even though it's heavy for travel, but consider this: if you setup a tripod with this lens in a single spot, you won't move a inch but you can get many different shots and composition just because its super long zoom range.

Strength:

This is an incredible lens! The range is great. 50-500 being just numbers, one does not realize how much you can accomplish with that range until you see what it is doing through the viewfinder. Very good balance and it looks cool too. I use 200 or 400 Fuji Superia film and the action shots are nice.

Strength:

this lens is a great and sharp.plus full time manul focus is a must.

Weakness:

is a tank so it weighs just as much.and the fstop is to slow.

IF you must only take one lens buy this one.
If you use the 2x converter the lens becomes a 200-1000 with a fstop of f10-f12 ... that alone could make the buy but for the price your going to love it... just get it..

Strength:

* 50-500 mm
* Sharp event at maximum focal length
* Quiet and reasonably fast AF
* Manual focus override

Weakness:

* Heavy
* f6.3 max. length
* In reality it is only a 50-465 lens (I don't know if this is true or not, just read it in a magazine)

This is a VERY good lens. For such amount of money this is the best you can get. Of course you need a tripod and some workout to carry this baby around the country.
