    Strength:

    Price, sharpness, well built

    Weakness:

    flare

Value lens at low price, good in most conditions, some problems of fare due to the number of lenses but stil worth to buy, it''s a little worse than the original but the Pentax 28-70 2,8 costs 2000€!!!

    Strength:

Strong build, flower-petal lens, true IF, 77mm filters

    Weakness:

Tendency to hunt with Nikon AF mount. Need to stop down two stops to get sharpness. Neutral coloring.

This lens has a great build but only reasonable performance. It''s built like a tank, but I really care for my equipment, so I can''t say that I''ve bounced it off the sidewalk to determine how robust the build is. Needless to say, it certainly looks and feels like a "pro" lens, with the black crinkle finish, heavy weight, and flower-petal hood. The looks are matched by the handling - the barrel moves about a quarter inch forward as you zoom through the focal range, and it''s a true IF design - the front element doesn''t rotate, making use of circular polarizers easier. But the performance leaves something to be desired. You''ll really have to stop down to f/4-5.6 to get sharp photos, it''s deathly soft at f/2.8. Using a Nikon AF body like the new N65 and N80 series, it''s front heavy because of the weight. Contrast is good stopped down, but the color is decidedly neutral, almost bordering on cool. The photos lack a decisive "snap" even with slide film. The AF on the Nikons tended to "hunt" with this lens even on high-contrast targets.

    Strength:

Sturdy and stylish finish, great aperture value(2,8), D compatiable. Strong steel bayonet.

    Weakness:

Zooming action could be more smoother.Lens hood feels little bit plasticy.

In my opinion peoples'' critics regarding this lens just depends on its manufacturer. I am sure so many photographers will not criticize so hardly about this lens if it was made by their camera body manufacturer. And another thing I am sure of is also brand lens users have problem with their lenses but they do not say I will never purchase Nikkor or Canon lenses. :) I''ve been using Nikon bodies for along time(Now using Nikon F100) and I can say this lens, for this price is great value. OK, Nikon brand lens for the same range is better but how about the price? Does the quality changes 3X more as it happens in the price? Definitely No.. I do not make diagrams, which have complicated x-y axis charts. The truth is on the screen where you see your slides clearly. It is fine optic and much more better than the last generation low priced Nikon lenses.

    Strength:

Fast 2.8 Semi-Fast focus Sharp Sharp! The price is great for the lens you are getting!

    Weakness:

The focus is a little loud, (compared to the L series Canon optics)

I''m going to go along with a lot of what everyone else says about this lens. Pretty solid lens, nice sharp images with it also

    Strength:

Affordable f2,8 28-70mm lens Relatively light in weight. front does not rotate, helps with modular and polarizing filters. Still in one piece inspite of hard work.

    Weakness:

    prone to flare and gosting.

Although I use mine a lot, in retrospect I would not buy it.

    Customer Service

    Expensive and slow in NZ.

OK Nikkon guys lets look at the real figures shall we ? The MTF tests indicate a fraction of difference between the Nikkon and sigma lenses - I am sure this fraction of performance is not reflected in Price. The Sigma tests do show some pincushion distortion as we have clarified but contrast and resolution differences are negligable here... but price vs performance ...not even close to the Sigma lens.

    Strength:

Build quality is excellent. Very serious looking piece of kit. Mine was the Minolta version.

    Weakness:

Major close focussing problem with Minolta version. The camera was lighting the focus lock indicator in the viewfinder but the image was clearly not in focus. If I moved about 2cm closer the image became pin sharp in the viewfinder. I took some protrait shots of my daughter and the results were clearly out of focus. Jessops sent mine away for a repair but it was returned in a worse condition than when it went. 3 new lenses were ordered as replacements to try and solve the problem but I ended up geting a full refund.

It is a pity to tarnish, what appears to be an excellent lens in other fittings in this way but Minolta users beware. Try it in the shop first. Focus on something close and check that the image is sharp. If you have to move a little closer after the focus lock has been given then leave it alone. My portraits are excellent if you like the ears in sharp focus as opposed to the eye's.

    Customer Service

Customer service was dreadful. Sigma would not even aknowledge that there was a problem with the Minolta version of this lens. I don't think the engineer who tested my lens even tried it on a camera body. If he had he would have seen that it was totally out of focus.

    Strength:

Fine sharpness, good contrast and collours! Solid built!

    Weakness:

My canon ( I have an eos300)version does not autofocus when it is dark, even when it flashes. I guess the f ratio of 2.8 is the problem here. I geuss I've read something about that. But after all, I do'nt ever use the autofocus!

It is allways fun when people with slr's take pictures and you bring out your camera with this lens! It's verry large for a 28-70 lens (even my 70-210 uc II is smaller). But in fact it is a very reliable lens witch is very sollid built and feels good too. With this lens I first tought it wansn't that good untill I switched from devellopper. It does make clear pictures with rich contrast and collor! It get's verry close to it's subject: 20cm from the front of the lens.
