Noisy focus during auto focus. "Hunts" at low light. The range is 28 /200.
The sharpness of the pictures is extremely poor especially at close up range. Sharpness is only fair at mid range or full open.
The fact that it has a MACRO ring, means nothing if used with a D70s. The MACRO function is totally non usable. You have to keep the MACRO ring in the locked position or the D70s will not function and give an Err reading. Pseudo MACRO is only accomplished by using the zoom and hoping the auto focus will lock in. You can put the camera on manual focus and use the focus ring, but it is extremely sensitive. No matter what you do , you cannot get a sharp close up picture. The depth of field is so short that you can only focus on less than the first half of the stickers of a two inch ball cacti. The part that is in focus always comes out soft. Not correctable in Paint Shop Pro X

For the price, this is practically a throw a way lens. Having been spoiled by the optics in a Nikon 5700 digital, I purchased a new Nikon D70s and went cheap on the lens. Big mistake!
For medium shots with plenty of light, it will pass for general use.
Don't expect good close up or sharp telephoto.

None,if one understands that this lens doesn't really "replace" other lenses,it complements them. AF isn't fast,but not bad either.Not as noisy as many 3rd party hyperzooms.

I wanted a do-it-all lens and knew there would be compromises.I expected this lens to be really soft,but it is not-as long as it is used stopped down(f8 works very well,especially with a little Photoshop sharpenimg).I carry this lens when i want to lug only one lens and it covers an enormous range.It performs better than i ever expected.It is not a "five star" optically,but I'm giving it a "5" because it does what it is intended to do so well.

Initial impression...it's worth the money. I mounted this lens on a Canon Digital Rebel XT as a every-day walk around lens. I did some quick comparisons with the Canon Kit lens EFS 18-55, putting both at the same focal length in the same light and camera setup. On a quick test in Auto mode, the Sigma lens outperforms the Canon Kit lense in clarity. The Sigma is a tad bit brighter as well. The Sigma auto-focus is noisy and almost as quick at the kit lens, if not just a hair slower. The construction and feel to the lens is far superior to the kit lens. I like the zoom lock feature and that it comes with a lens hood. It's a heave lens for being so compact. Test shots outdoors in bright sunlight were better than the Kit lens as well, slight better focus and much greater range. Fringing is less with the Sigma than with the Kit lens also by about half on the shots I took both indoors and outdoors. Overall, it feels and performs like a much better lens than what comes stock on the Rebel XT/ EOS 350D. I'm taking to the east coast on vacation, I'll report back with anything additional I find.

So far so good. I have the newer version of this lens (62mm). Can't be beat from a price/performance standpoint. Not the sharpest of lenses (don't expect National Geographic quality from it), however, it greatly reduces the " I missed the shot because I didn't have the right lens attached" scenarios. I have it mated to my Rebel XT and it performs solidly for photographing kids' soccer games. Macro's not too shabby either.

Good general-purpose lens. Good and sharp from 35mm to 200mm. Macro feature is useful. Not too heavy. Value for money.

I've been testing consumer wide-range zooms for a client and this Sigma 28-200 f3.5/5.6 Compact Hyperzoom surprised me. Perhaps I should not have been so surprised as Sigmas 18-125 DC lens is good. The most surprising thing is how sharp it is at 200mm, and in fact from 35mm upwards. Wide open it is a little soft, which improves when stopped down to f8 and up. Contrast is good but colour is a little cold. Autofocus is fast enough. It produces nice bokeh as well, and little or no purple fringing. What lets it down is its performance between 28mm and 35mm. Here the AF is not spot-on and it is prone to flare which improves if the supplied lens hood is used. There's also quite noticeable barrelling at 28mm. The point of these zooms is to provide a single lens where you would otherwise need two. So this lens combines a 28-80 and an 80-200 and on a film camera you can walk around with it all day without needing another lens. It does than job about 80% well and 20% only adequately. The equivalent for digital cameras is Sigma's 18-125 DC which is a better lens (and 25% more expensive). My client wants a lens for a film camera and it's the one I have recommended to her and I was sufficiently impressed to buy one myself for my Canon EOS 33 though I won't be using it on Canon digital kit. I'd like to give this lens a rating of 3.5 stars, but as it is not worth 4 I have given it 3.

None really for the price, unless you get a lemon, as we have on the *ISTD. QC seems to be very lax.

An odd one this. I was advised AGAINST this lens, but tried it anyway on my 10D. Everyone now agrees how good it is for the money... However, my wife also bought one for her Pentax *istD, and it was terrible! Soft, mushy pictures with no chance of usable quality.

28-200 mm

Severe vignetting. Soft pictures.

I bought this lense because I want to have a lens with a long range to carry around during travel. I like the built of this lens. But I was very dissapointed with the result. I used my Nikon F80 for the first roll of film with this lens. None of the pictures I've taken appears to be sharp. It is very soft and grainy. And severe vignetting appears around 28-35mm.

soft & grainy pictures

I bought this lens because of the reviews on this site and I regret to inform that this lens gives very grainy & "soft" pictures. None of the pictures in the 1st roll I shot were crisp. Very disappointed in the lens. The camera I used was a Canon Elan II and the film was Kodak 800.

This is the first non-Canon brand lens I have purchased in the last 20 years....I was looking for something versatile and lightweight and the low cost of this gem was a bonus. When the lens arrived, I took my first roll of film doing some side-by-side comparisons to my Canon 28-105. I was very pleased with the results. The images taken with the Sigma were equal or superior in every way to the Canon lens. The Canon lens now sits on the camera bag while the Sigma is permanently mounted on my EOS A2E.
