Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX Aspherical HSM 35mm Zoom

Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX Aspherical HSM 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

It combines a fast F2.8-4 maximum aperture with ultra wide angle zoom lens of 17-35mm. It incorporates aspherical lens elements in the front, as well as rear lens groups, to correct spherical aberration. It also incorporates internal focusing to prevent deterioration of the optical quality at close distances and to eliminate rotation of the front barrel during focusing. A "perfect hood" is provided. The AF drive for Sigma SA and Canon S.L.R. cameras is equipped with a silent, responsive and fast Micro Hyper Sonic Motor (H.S.M.). The lens materials used in this new lens are lead and arsenic free ecological glass.

Strength:

Sharp, excellent colour reproduction, well built (despite the plastic feel).
Price!!

Weakness:

Not f2.8 throughout the zoom range.

Have to switch between MF and AF.

Nothing this good at this price. In fact nothing this good at double the price.

Strength:

this is the great lens
for the shots you just can't get wide enough. and for the cost of the good deal....

Weakness:

the lens could you have to take it off to put the cap on. and it fills cheap but for the money....

for that one lens you use once in a Blue Moon this is a great buy. just something handy to keep in the back for those super wide shots and for the money you can't complain....

Strength:

Lets you get a reasonable wide angle on a D30(all focal lengths x 1.6)

Weakness:

82mm filter size(cost a fortune!)...Should be constant f2.8!!

Having purchased a Canon D30(with a focal length increase of x1.6),The prohibitive cost of Canons own wide angle zoom soon pointed me in the direction of Sigma`s little beauty,Boy am I glad!Cracker of an optic to own!!

Customer Service

Fingers crossed(shhhhh)

Strength:

- Cheapest 17mm zoom on the market
- Fast apeature at wide end
- Superb optics
- Little to none barrel distortion
- Excellent colour/contrast
- Internal focus

Weakness:

- Rotating focus ring during AF
- Ugly finish (matter of personal taste)
- 82mm UV costs 1/6 of the lens price. PL....em
- AF problem (see customer servie section)

This is the dream ultra-wide angle lens of poor people like me. The optic is wonderful and the price makes it extremely attractive for EOS users. For Nikon fans, why not trying the 18-35/3.5-4.5ED?! Well, as per my experience, please do try the lens before you actually pay.

I put 5 star on value since it is the cheapest 17mm zoom (1/3 price of the Canon 17-35L) on the market with high quality optics. However, the rotating focusing ring and the AF problem that I had prevents me to give a top rating on overall.

Customer Service

Mine have problem with its AF. When shooting landscape, the AF stopped between 1 & 1.5m mark. I then went to exchange for another one, guess what?! I've tried 4 of those and all shared the same problem on the following EOS bodies I've been testing on: 30/300/100/1V/5/50/3 & D30. Eventually, I've give up the fine optics and 17mm to trade for the Canon EF 20-35/3.5-4.5. Luckily, the shop owner agreed to exchange it for me. (remember, here is HK, not US)

Strength:

Well built (EX finish)
HSM (internal focus)
Very sharp even at 17mm f/2.8 and 35 f/4
Lighweight compared to Canon

Weakness:

Filters of 82mm
NO FTM

This is one of the best lenses Sigma ever made.
I'm very impressed with the quality of wide opened shots for about 1/3 the price of the Canon 17-35L. It's an excellent buy.
NOTE FOR D30 USERS:
The filter of 82mm is not a big deal, because you can get a 82-77mm step down ring and use your normal filters. HOW? Because the D30 only uses the central part of the lens, therefore there will be NO vignette.

Customer Service

Never used (good sign)

Price

Weakness:

82mm filter size (not a big issue)

This is an excellent lens. Very sharp even at 2.8, very competitive price and well corrected.
Sharpness and contrast are equal or better than the 17-35L, especially from 17-24mm
Great buy

Strength:

Wide angle zoom range
Sharp focus, even at widest F-stops.
Reasonably sharp focus.
Not bad on barrel distortion for such a wide angle
Great price for a quality wide angle zoom.

Weakness:

Must switch to manual focus
Focus and Zoom rings opposite Canon
Focus ringe moves in hand when supporting lens

Great Value. Impressively sharp even at wide open (a little shaper a stop or two down). As sharp as some of the best Canon lenses (have not compared to Canon 17-35). A great companion with the 28-135IS on a Canon D30. I would not recommend some other Simga lenses, but this one works great.

Strength:

not too heavy
great optics...
great zoom range...huge...!

Weakness:

focus ring too easy to turn but use a/f most of the time anyway...!

this lens is great value for money considering the nikon equivalent in australia is approx. 3 times the retail price.great optics for landscapes or any photography that requires this size lens. i have found that it spends most of it's life on my f100 for general pics, especially rainforests & landscapes. you can't go wrong with this lens, with a fast speed and good glass...

Purchased new one year ago. Loved the results using RVP. No issues with flare or wash out at 17mm. Focus ring is a bit cheap feeling and the zoom ring should be coated to make it a little more comfortable. Overall great until the HSM motor went out. Sigma was very responsive getting it fixed, but still, after only six months and 30 odd rolls, there should not have been a problem. Overall I love the value, hope it holds up....

Strength:

low price, light-weight, excellent contrast and colour rendition. Silent and fast auto-focus(HSM for Canon EOS).

Weakness:

Flare, without the hood. A bit soft at f2.8. Vignetting with more than 2 filtres. Cokin fltres unusable at 17mm, unless adapter is oriented horizontally: no colour gradient filters! Depth-of-field scale not very usable at long focal lengths. 82mm fltres cost a fortune. Focusing ring too soft. Important barel distortion at 17mm: too bad for architecture, not a problem with landscapes.

Highly recommended. The price tag makes you overlook the shortcomings mentionned. Great for landscape photography.
