Strength:
12-24mm on full frame build quality sharp pics when used correctly price zoom and focusing ring well damped
Weakness:
size a little big lack of screw in filters Excellent product. Well built and easily compares my former nikon 12-24mm which was stolen. Has sharp pics from f8-16 provided you know how to use hyperfocal distance focusing. Has the bonus of 12mm on full frame. Strength:
The comparative lack of distortion for a super-wide lens, also its sharpness and though it is very slightly soft this is not a problem. I feel this gives a better tonal range to the image. Just a small amount of sharpening in Photoshop quickly corrects and perceived problem and who doesn't sharpen their digital shots?
Weakness:
The widest aperture f4.5, but at that price who can complain. I have always used Nikon cameras and lenses for 35mm work. However when buying a digital camera I went for a Fuji S2 on recommendation and bought 3 new Nikon digital zoom lenses to go with it. Shortly afterwards my son who is also a pro and who also uses a Fuji S2 bought a Sigma lens and raved about it. I checked this out and had to agree with him. So when I came to purchase a super wide lens I decided to try a Sigma 12-24mm. All I can say is WOW! I wish i had known how good these lenses were years ago. The lens is sharp, if a wee bit soft but a few moments in Photoshop brings out the full potential of the lens. I find the lack of banana distortion on the edges of the frame when I shoot at its widest focal length is quite remarkable. I once owned a Nikon 20mm lens which I used to call my banana lens. So all in all I am delighted with the Sigma's performance and especially with its price compared to Nikkors. Similar Products Used: Nikkor 20mm Nikkor 18-35mm Nikkor 24mm |

Strength:
A useable wideangle for digital at half the price of the Nikkor, and seemingly better made than the latest G Nikkors
Weakness:
Softness, speed, softness, size, softness Finally a proper wide-angle for the digital SLR user. I photograph interiors, so the prospect was more than appealing. Pity about the softness, especially on Jpg's. The reviews are accurate though as it's only useable at F8 onwards. Strength:
wild perspectives on film, and very wide on DSLR 1.5X
Weakness:
A slow lens and using filters is a little problematic 12-24mm is superb for DSLR applications and AMAZING for film shoots. It may not be fast, or ultra sharp, but one needs to consider the focal lengths that are presented at the price asked. I love using this lens for its impact and versatility. I am a medium format commercial photographer, but I have used it for travel shoots recently. Strength:
Very sharp and very well made.
Weakness:
I would have liked to see an f2.8 or f4.0 After reading several of the earlier reviews, I was a bit reluctant to purchase this lens. Since purchasing it, however, I am glad that I did. I find this lens to be very solidly made and extremely sharp(even the corners). I use it on my Nikon F5 so I get the full wide-angle coverage. It really is a fine lens and is a lot of fun to use. When used properly it will give professional results. Customer Service n/a Similar Products Used: Nikon 20-35mm Sigma 14mm |

Strength:
Wide field Focus Image quality is good enough for a reasonably picky amatuer
Weakness:
Big filter size (didn't have any 82mm yet) Not fast (but it doesn't claim to be) Perspective distortion at the wide end (comes with the territory when you get this wide) Not usable with the built-in flash on my 10D -- lens casts a huge shadow at the wide end, and a noticable shadow even at 24mm Exactly what I was looking for for a wide angle lens for my 10D. The lens I use most is the Canon 28-135 is. I wanted to have something wider & 20-35's etc didn't give enough extra field of view to be worthwhile. I'd heard good things about the Canon 17-40 but with the crop it's 27mm, not super wide. Even a 15 is 24mm equivalent... The 12-24 is wwwiiiiddddeee... even with the 1.6x crop it is like a 19mm. Focus is fast and quiet, colors and sharpness are good for a super-wide zoom. FYI, the spec says to use gelatin filters, but with a DSLR you can use an 82mm and the vignetting is cropped out of the image except at the very wide end :-) Only real downside is the combination of slow & shadowing from built-in flash means its only usable indoors with an external flash, making the whole outfit a little bulky. |

Strength:
12mm Super Wide Angle very good quality at this price
Weakness:
82mm Front Filter size Small Aperture Very value lens to be considered if u are using non-fullframe DSLR. If u have the filter on, the lens could go down to 12mm(actually 19mm) on DSLR without any quality problem, but only around 17mm on film SLR without vignette. To use 12mm on film SLR, u have to get rid of the filter part. In this case u can make good use of the 12mm anywhere. This lens has the aperture range of 4.5-22 to 5.6-29. Normally, aperture value of smaller than f/8 will definitely give you a good result on any SLR, I suppose I can say identical to Sigma 15-30 and Canon 17-40. Whereas at 12mm f/4.5 on a fullframe SLR which is the worst case, it still delivers an acceptable result. I have few pics of this lens and some tests out of this lens using 10D http://www.pbase.com/fengtianrui and on Fullframe 1Ds as well: http://dpr.jirman.com/12-24/ Similar Products Used: Canon EF 17-40/4L USM |

Strength:
Excellent wide angle coverage. Limited Distorion, considering focal length. Very Resistant to Lens flare.
Weakness:
Not particularly fast (widest aperture is f4.5 - 5.6) Difficult to focus. A Little soft. This Lens is fantastic. For my 10D with reduced frame size it provides excellent wide angle coverage (about 19mm by film standards). Distortion isn;t as apparent as on Sigma's 14mm offering and is much less prone to Flare. Overall an excellent value lens that produces results above and beyond its asking price. Similar Products Used: Sigma 14mm f 2.8 Lens Canon 16 - 35mm f 2.8 Lens |

Strength:
Fast focus, well constructed. Great and usefull range 12-24
Weakness:
Very soft images. They lack snap and contrast. Do not by this lens. It is very soft. I had it rushed to me from B&H so that I could use it for a wedding with my Canon 10D. I was not impressed. Very soft compared to my Canon 28-105 and even my 28-200mm USM. I am going to do a more extensive review on my website soon at: www.IraGrahamhotography.com |
