a little need of IS = Image stabilzer perhaps? but no big deal at all.BUY IT,otherwise i think theres none.

WOW;They are all correct about this lens! as a PJ i have searched for a nice and handy yet very strong and absolutely photographic perfect lens which is full of features.I think for now that i have found it definitely; it even exceeds my other sports favorite the famed Sigma 70-200 F2,8 ! i think its more sharp and have better colours and no distortion and no CA ,at all.Its beyond my imagination and i am very impressed to this matter,i even use it for portraits and other PJ jobs alike,i think it is very close to a fixed lens when it comes to pure result of a good sharp pic!. But i use it for sports mainly; set the iso high on my 10D and or 20D/1D and shoot away; the response and HSM is so super fast so im chokked. Its a Pro instrument and worth every dollar. The pics get sharp and perfect with no focus probs at all, whatsoever. The quality reminds me of Leica.I think its the best investment ive done recently.Period. And now for the best ; it works flawlessly with the TlC 1,4 and guess what ?its sharp sharp sharp from F5,6 and above.Could you need more than that?no .Sigma; Thanks !..BUY IT:

Strength:

Weight, nice lenshood, nice finish, superb zooming and excelent fulltime focus.

Weakness:

Large front lense (82 mm) means expencive filters. Disturbing flare in direkt sunlight.

Superb lens, the best lense i ever tryed. Sharp and crisp in wiewfinder, hi contrast and nice color rendition. A bit heavy but is perfectly balanced, lies firm in hand when shooting whithout tripod. Large, constant f/4 from 100-300 mm. Have absolute no complaints regarding this lens.

Strength:

Strong build. Fast & quiet focus. Image quality. Price point!!

Weakness:

None so far.

I am extremely pleased with the quality of build construction. Image quality and focus is at least as good as Nikon AFS 80-200/2.D and better than Nikon VR 80-400. Tripod mount is solid and moves freely. Instant manual focus override is very handy; autofocus re-engages instantly. Works flawlessly with my Nikon D1H.

Strength:

Sharp wide open even with a 1.4 APO Sigma teleconverter attached. Superbly well balanced, so much so that when proper hand holding technique is applied can render sharp images down in the 1/60th second range at 300mm. Top notch construction with none of the foibles of consumer lenses noted As always at this level nice to have the carry case and strap included

Weakness:

None

A remarkably well built and precision instrument for taking sharp and contrasty photographs. A professional tool to be sure as there is no slop in the operation of this lens, nor compromise in it's construction in any way. Easily equals the color and contrast of a more expensive Canon L lens

Strength:

Optics contrast, sharpness, colour rendition and no visible light falloff in the corners like the Nikkors. Mechanics++ autofocusspeed, Leica quality nearby!!

Weakness:

flare in direct sunlight between 200-300mm but still better than the Nikkors bokeh could be a bit better at the long end.

Sigma Apo EX HSM 100-300 f4 Great Lens, high contrast and sharpness due to good apchromatic correction. Between 250-300mm 1 stop down needed for best results. Bokeh is good exept for this range. Mechanical great performer. Zen-finish is not good on metal though. Starts to be rubbed off. Autofocus-speed with F5 is extremely fast, on Nikon FM2 manual focussing is suberb, focussing ring is a bit big but no problem if you are used to it. Better then Nikon VR 70-200 / Afs80-200ED or AF ED 80-200 f2,8 lenses. And a lot cheaper!

Strength:

Fast focus, portable, color saturation, crisp lens.

Weakness:

Not a 2.8 but would rather not have the extra weight. Not vibration reduction, but again now that Sigma is doing this, the weight...

I bought this lens after researching (adnausium)Nikon's options... Wanted Nikon's 70-200 f2.8 but really needed that 300mm range... Nikon's only alternative is their 80-400 f4.5-f5.6 but everything I read about that lens was it was ultra slow focusing - not what you need for sports! Also, eeh gads, the Nikon is 2x the cost! So, off I went researching 3rd party lenses - oh my god, how could I not have a Nikon strapped to my neck? Easy Sigma 100-300 f/4 - that's how! Super duper fast focus! Great focal range! Realatively light at 3.2lbs. I shot both with the monopod and hand-held. Hand-held did just fine! I noticed little if any distortion. Only a bit of flare/ghost into pretty much direct sun... Color saturation is excellent. Nice tight crisp lens... I'll be looking back to Sigma for more.

Hopefully not...

Strength:

Weakness:

weight (well I have no problem with that)

Before I bought this fantastic lens I had the EF 75-300mm. At sometimes I was not very happy with it. But then through my "prefered" photo dealer, I had the possibility to try a "new from manufacting line" Sigma 100-300mm f4. Fanstastic!! The AF is very fast and the built is fine. AFter testing the lens at the airport (arrival and departure photos, cause I am also an aviation photographer) I bought the lens on monday after 2 days testing. It works also fine with 1x4 and 2x converter, well I used a Kenko one. With the Canon EOS 3 this lens is a great chance for fine photos. I know the EF 70-200 f2.8 is better. "BUT- I need until 300mm - the 100-400m of Canon I think not so good, because I had earlier same zooming lens 35-105mm. Also the part 300-400mm I hear is not excellent. So why paying too much for things which I can't pay (now) or don't use. I am happy with that product.

Customer Service

Well, I have don't need it since I bought the lens. But with the service card one complete cleaning and correction is every year incl.

Strength:

Sharpness, colour rendition, instant auto focus

Weakness:

quite large when lens hood attached

This lens covers a very useful focal range when used with a digital SLR for sports photography. I use this lens with my Fuji S2 Pro. I recently covered a track cycling event and hand held at 75 metres I could read the time off the cyclists wrist watch. Very sharp, and excellent contrast even at F4. I found the lens a bit soft at +F22 at 300mm. The HSM auto focus with constant manual overide is almost instantaneous and I find my hit rate has improved enormously. The lens is fairly heavy but is not too bad given the amazing sharpness in the end result. Definately upin the pro class for performance and build quality.

Strength:

Sharp, quality images. Well made. Good price.

Weakness:

None.

I chose this lens over the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 for its better range, similar weight, length and cost. It held a few surprises of which the best were the excellent sharpness, contrast and colour throughout its range and at f4. The worst was the shallow depth of field and especially at its closest focusing distance of 1,8m where it looks soft between 250 and 300mm. It is not. It is that the dof shrinks to less than 8mm. Putting some distance between the lens and object brings back the sharpness. HSM is very good. Silent and fast. In the box you get a lens case & strap, tripod collar and lens hood. The build of the lens is very good. It feels very solid. It offers full-time manual focus. Internal focusing so nothing moves on the outside. Filters are 82mm. It feels well-balanced on my Canon D60. Hand holding is fine with the tripod collar off. You hold it by the lens not the camera. Here's a review which contrasts a Nikkor 80-200 f2.8 to the Sigma 100-300 f4 EX HSM... http://www.motljus.com/mottech_detail.asp?TechIdNr=28&Page=0

Customer Service

Not needed. However, in the past I have found Sigma to be responsive and helpful to queries.

Strength:

Nice zoom range Fairly lightweight, compact - for its range Rugged look & feel Decent image quality at f/8 & smaller Affordable

Weakness:

Poor resolution at f/4, particularly > 200mm

I prefer Nikkors, but Nikon does not offer a comparable Nikkor - the 80-400 VR is apparently not really for fast action photography, and I have not used it. I use this lens primarily for rodeo action photography, and in that venue, shooting in good day lighting with a D1H at f/8-f/11, it performs very well. The HSM autofocus seems pretty quick and doesn't hunt excessively. The lens collar comes off and makes the lens more easily handled, and the manual focus over-ride is nice. I've tried it for night football at iso eqivalent 1600-6400, shooting at f/4, and the images are rather poorly resolved, even for action images. This is worst at 200-300mm.
