Strength:
- Constant f/2.8 - Sharp, sharp, sharp (even wide open) - Great colour & contrast in images - Build quality - Nikon ED high quality glass
Weakness:
- Can get very heavy at times ! - Expensive This lense by Nikon is absolutely 'wicked'. Many Reviews written about this lense over time show just what a 'legend' of a lense Nikon have created here. I own the Tripod Collar ED 'D' two-ring version (not the AF-S)which has the Tripod collar mount. At all focal lengths and most apertures the lense performs flawlessly. The edge to centre sharpness is very good to excellent, depending on what aperture you are using. Even wide open at all focal lengths I get great sharpness across the entire frame. The colour and contrast of the images produced by this lense is excellent, thanks to the ED glass I presume. I use the lense mainly for Outdoor work, and the ocassional Portrait shot. The images that this lens produces are truely 'Pro' class, and are comparable to those that a 'Prime' lens would produce. It is expensive, but it is most definately worth every penny spent. If you are serious about your hobby this lense will not be dissapoint. Customer Service Not needed as yet ! Strength:
very responsive, quiet, well-built
Weakness:
none Anyone considering upgrading your older AF 80-200mm lens won't be disappointed by the performance of this lens. The auto-focus is much more responsive and accurate, not to mention very quiet. I get more consistently sharper images shooting sporting events. I wouldn't dare shoot AF with my previous Nikon AF 80-200mm f/2.8 (original model). Customer Service don't expect to anytime soon Similar Products Used: Nikon AF 80-200mm f/2.8 (1st version) |

Strength:
Optical quality
Weakness:
Not push-pull zoom collar, just a personal choice. Should come with lens shade (extra $). 77mm filter size is also uncommon unless you get the Nikkor 20-35mm f2.8 also This lens has incredible sharpness, color, focus speed. It can isolate a subject like nothing I have ever used before, it is also amazingly fast. What else could be said about this lens Dont leave home without it. Customer Service Not Used |

Sharp Well built AF sufficiently fast for my needs
Weakness:
Bulk Wish tripod collar was removable Fantastic lens. Sharpness and contrast are superb. Previously owned a 75-300, and the difference is very noticeable. Bulky, heavy, yes all those things,...but oh, those images! Let me put it this way: My first two lenses were the 105 f2.5 and 55 f2.8 macro. Both Nikon legends, and that set my expectations for image quality. This lens met those expectations Bought local in California, so I paid a more than I should have, but had to have it for the Long Beach Grand Prix. Customer Service Not needed, but Nikon Torrance has done well for me in the past Similar Products Used: Nikkor: 24 AF f2.8 35-70 AFD f2.8 55 f2.8 MF macro 105 f2.5 50mm f1.4 MF AI'd |

Strength:
Beautiful optical qualities. It's sharp, clear, and the colors are gorgeous. The out of focus rendition has, for lack of a better term, an artful look to it. I always wondered how some photojournalists got that dreamy blur, now I know. Very little flare for a zoom lens. Amazing value with the (now expired) rebate. Not a bad deal without it.
Weakness:
I have a hard time holding it by hand and doing manual focus, sometimes. The diameter seems awfully big for the focal length range, but I guess that's life with autofocus. And it could be a bit lighter, but they seem to be going the other way with that (AF-S). Plastic filter mount is easy to cross thread, but it sure holds the filters in place. For now, anyway. Crappy plastic hood design tends to get loose and fall off for no apparent reason. But the optics are so good I don't care! I've only had it a couple of weeks, but I already love this thing! The optics are superb - it's warm, clear, and sharp. The images I'm getting have a greater sense of depth and a richness and clarity of color that I haven't seen in my work before now. Strength:
1. Optical quality. Need I say more ? (After all Nikon used to make lenses for Canon :)) 2. Build quality
Weakness:
1. Slight fall off wide open. 2. Heavy ! Not for casual shooting. 3. Plastic filter ring. I am not a big filters person so I don't care much. 4. Auto Focus speed, or so I hear. This is my only AF lens amidst a host of MF Olympus lenses, and again I don't really care. Some people complain that the tripod collar should be removable but I don't find this to be a problem. I needed a high quality 80-200, didn't care what brand ( I was, and still am, into Olympus manual focus)and the 2-ring/tripod collar Nikkor (non AF-S) seemed to be the best value for money. I bought the lens first, and needed a body. So I had somebody "gift" me an N80 to go with it! :) The first couple of rolls of Provia 100F shot during a trip to Yosemite were disappointing..(stacked filters are such a no no). I used a KR-3 warming over a Circular Pol., and the images came out soft. For my next few rolls I didn't use any filters ,maybe a poloarizer now and then. The results were just incredible ! Even projected, the slides looked quite stunning. I can honestly say that starting at f/5.6 and below.. this lens begins to rival my Olympus 90/2 macro (the industry standard against which all macros should be tested) ! -Tim Customer Service Takes forever to get the rebate check, but you will get it eventually. Built like a tank. Sharp. Fast (aperture and AF speed) Handles well.
Weakness:
Weight and size Sharp, well-built and fast. Very versatile, but not for casual shooting due to its size and weight. Great color and contrast, as well as excellent sharpness. Customer Service haven''t used yet Similar Products Used: 80-200 AF-S (much more money for not much more speed) |
