Strength:
Quiet and super fast autofocus. Can manual focus while in auto focus mode.
Weakness:
A macro at 85 mm would have been nice. I have the Nikon F100 and decided to upgrade from the Sigma 28-80 to the Nikon 24-85. The autofocusing is fast, quiet and accurate and the quality of the photographs are super with wonderful color reproduction. Very Happy with results. Similar Products Used: Sigma 28-80 |

Extremely Fast
Weakness:
None bought a Nikon f100 and a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens as a basic SLR kit last year. A nice set up to learn some basic photography skills, but when after doing some traveling the 50mm proved to have too many drawbacks, so I purchased this lens as a good quality zoom. This lens functions best when framing objects through the wider ranges, as 85mm is not really long enough for any meaningful telephoto work. The 24-50mm range has proved to be the most productive area, allowing me to fit large temples into the frame and to take pictures in confined spaces. It's also a great looking lens that makes my camera look better than it did with the dimunitive (but effective) 50mm. The construction is plastic but feels sturdy, and is finished in a pleasing spatter effect, which I believe Nikon calls something like "Pro-texture." The AF-S is an extremely nice feature Customer Service Not yes Similar Products Used: Tamron 28-105mm F2.8 AFD, 80-200mm F2.8D, Sigma 24-70 EX F2.8 |

Strength:
Price, outstanding value ED glass produces sharp images AF-S motor (my non lenses seem really loud and slow now.....)
Weakness:
Not rugged pro construction. Didn't want the weight or the price anyways. Finally Nikon has released an affordable lens with AF-S and ED glass. The AF-S is virtually silent, and almost instant. The ED glass produces sharp, vivid images. The body is polycarbonate, which matches up perfectly with my F80 for handling and carrying around. Very good zoom range, has a little bit extra on either end to squeeze in a shot without having to change lenses. Already used to setting the aperture with the camera dial, so no aperture ring is actually a plus for me. I don't typically need a fast aperture with this zoom range either, so the f3.5-4.5 is fine too. This lens is a winner. Bang for the buck, it's the best lens I've seen from Nikon. Excellent pictures, wide enough zoom range, AF-S, and an affordable price. If the 70-200 "G" VR ever gets released, and it's similar to this lens, could be one of the best tag teams ever! Strength:
Colour Saturation, Lack of aperture ring, M & M/A switch, AFS, ED glass, etc, etc.
Weakness:
When you put the lens hood on backwards (as Nikon recommends in the info sheet) to store it, you cannot use the zoom ring!! VERY ANNOYING. What a great lens! I lost my Nikkor 24-85 2.8-4 in an unfortunate boating accident, and decided to go with the new AFS lens for a variety of reasons. 1)PRICE (610 for the AFS vs. 860 for the older one (Canadian Prices)) I found this a significant difference for 2/3 ev difference in max. aperture considering all the features that you gained on the newer AFS lens. (M/A switch, ED element, SWM) 2)AFS I take pictures at functions that from time to time require the utmost discreteness. Because I have never been able to afford an AFS before I was VERY excite to get this feature! 3)M and M/A Switch. All I can say is AWESOME. What a great feature. I never knew I would use it at all let alone as much as I am! (Hyperfocal Landscapes are easy to compose and focus.) 4)Size. While the older 24-85 was not a HEAVY lens, it is significantly bigger then the new AFS one. And because this was to be my new "everyday" lens I appreciated the smaller size. After 3 rolls of film I could not be happier with my decision. This lens takes AWESOME pictures. I was never once disappointed with my old 24-85 as a lot of other people were, but this lens, to me, has way superior glass. The lack of the aperture ring is FANTASTIC. On an F100 it make the lens way more comfortable to hold then the older one. The smaller size/weight is a blessing, and the AFS is PHENOMENAL. I have to say that the only down side to this lens compared to the older one is the max aperture at 85mm, With the newer one I believe you can tell the difference in the smaller max aperture (4.5 vs. 4) This however is a VERY subjective comment and I have NOT done any controlled tests! At the other end (24mm), I was not concerned about the difference in max aperture at all, because why would you ever shot at 24mm wide open anyway? For landscapes I am always around f/8 or so, and you’d never use 24mm for portraits!!! The only other comment I can think of, and this was actually mentioned to me by the salesperson at Lens and Shutter is the lack of Macro compared to the older one. For me this was not an issue at all. I am lucky enough to own a Nikkor 105 2.8 macro (Another OUTSTANDING lens). The one time that I used the macro on the 24-85 I was bitterly disappointed. I never used it again. Plus the 105 had 1:1 where the 24-85 had 1:2! Customer Service Hope I never have to use this!! But I heard they were good up here in Canada. Superior ED glass AFS is quick and quiet as advertised Japan build quality
Weakness:
None; the new G-type lenses without an aperture ring is not an issue for me Worth every penny. I've been waiting for an everyday zoom to use on my F100, and I wanted one with AFS. Although Nikon already had a 28-70mm AFS zoom, I wanted a wider range. I had the non-AFS 24-85mm zoom, which I replaced due to mediocre performance. Initially, the light weight and smaller size caused some doubts. But the AFS system is amazingly quick and silent. Even my brother, who's a Canon guy, was impressed. The ED glass is noticeably superior to the the older 24-85 zoom, and the new lens cap is a nice touch. I would have no difficulty recommending this lens as a primary zoom. Strength:
Excellent buy and good quality. Fantastic range for both digital and analog cameras.
Weakness:
Not made for as I can see for heavy duty pro work. It lacks an aperture ring but that is the way the "G" lens goes. With the D100 you don't care but with the N90s you have to use P or S modes only. One beautiful piece of glass. I am using it mainly on my Nikon D100 but have used it also on my N90s in P and S modes. On the D100 it is fast and smooth and quiet. The quality of the images is fantastic considering the zoom and focal length and price. This is a winner lens when you consider with a digital you are going from normal to moderate telephoto. With the N90s you go the range of the wide angle to the short telephoto and both take you through the "normal" 35/50mm range. Customer Service No need for customer service. |

Strength:
1)AF-S(=HSM), IF, ED, 1 aspherical element – No comments, 2) 15 elements ! I am believe in zoom lens only above 14 elements (all cheap zoom lens have only 7-10 elements) 3)Brand Nikkor (not Sigma, Tokina, Tamron,…) – No comments, 4)Very good sharpness at D=3.5-4.5 in center (good in corners), but excellent everywhere at D=5.6! 5)I have tested both Nikkor 24-85 and Nikkor 28-105 (prints 20x30cm) at F=28,50,85 and D=3.5,8,16 and new NIKKOR lens is better (or equal) to old Nikkor 28-105, have sharp and vividly saturated colours(ED glass element!), 6) Very compact, 7) Neither does the front turn when the lens is zoomed.
Weakness:
1)Small barrel distortion at 24 mm and pincushion at 85 mm. But I don't shoot architecture, rather outdoor! 2)Small softeness at wide open in corners, but I use D=8 for landscapes and F=85, D=4.5 for portraits (corners doesn't matter), 3)No macro When I sold old Canon EOS-500 (+AF28-80-unacceptable soft lens !) and was about to buy new camera (Nikon F80 or Canon EOS33-approximately equal possibilities) and lens (Canon AF24-85/3.5-4.5USM or Nikkor AF28-105/3.5-4.5), I got a lot of advices from my friends: 1) Nikkor AF28-105/3.5-4.5 is more sharp then Canon AF24-85/3.5-4.5USM, 2) Canon AF24-85/3.5-4.5USM(1 aspherical element!) is more sharp then Canon AF28-105/3.5-4.5USM, 3)USM is very silent. Therefore when I had seen newest NIKKOR AF-S24-85/3.5-4.5 IF ED ASPH, I didn’t hesitate and bought Nikon F80+ Nikon AF-S24-85/3.5-4.5+filter UV Hoya HMC super (as protected)+bag Lowepro lumina mini.
