    Strength:

    - Picture quality - Lightweight - Price - Autofocus speed - Silent

    Weakness:

    - Plastic feel - Lens is extending while zooming, can be a problem for damaging the lens

A very useful lens with an interesting range from 24 to 85mm. I have used a Nikon 35-70mm f2.8 before and I switched to this consumer lens with great satisfaction. It's almost silent when autofocussing, it's fast, lightweight and picture quality is very good. I can't notice any difference with my 35-70mm f2.8.

    Strength:

AFS, price, sharpness, light weight, zoom range.

    Weakness:

The reversed position of the zoom and focus rings is awkward, but I've become used to it.

I bought this lens to use with an N80 when I don't want to carry a bunch of gear. Before buying it I tried two others, both of which were higher in price and lower in quality. I first bought the Nikon 24-85/2.8-4.0 D, and found the photos to be noticeably less sharp and contrasty than my Nikkor 50mm/1.4D, with noticeable distortion at the corners and edges. I returned that lens and bought a Nikon 24-120/3.5-5.6 G AFS VR. The main weakness of that lens was the small maximum aperture. VR freezes camera shake, but the slow shutter speeds required at f/5.6 mean you can't freeze a moving subject. I can't afford the 28-70/2.8, so I bought the 24-85/3.5-4.5 AFS G. I love the AFS, it really is almost instantaneous, and the lens is sharp, with acceptable distortion at the edges. There is noticeable vignetting at all focal lengths if you use the hood and built-in flash, and some at shorter focal lengths even without the hood.

    Weakness:

Nothing, for the price you get more that what I expected! Unless you are expecting this to perform like the Nikon 28-70 f2.8 AFS, there are really no obvious flaws in my opinion. Well, other than not having a 77mm filter ring.

I think this is probably the best inexpensive Nikon zoom available in this focal length. No doubt superior optics compared to the Nikon 24-120 VR lens. When I want to travel light, I always attached this lens and go. Excellent color saturation and sharpness.

    Strength:

Excellent sharpness, contrast Good colour saturation closest focusing is 0.38m, other brand like Canon & Contax is 0.5m. Fast and silent AF Plastic build but still feel solid

    Weakness:

Dust can enter into the lens easily. Linear distortion at 24mm is unacceptable.

I have this len for 2 weeks and have shot 2 rolls of Fujifilm with it attached to my F65. The result surprised me!!! The image is BRIGHT, SHARP, of HIGH CONTRAST and GOOD COLOUR SATURATION. This len is even sharp at it's close focus of 0.38m. I have shot a lotus flower with this len set at 85mm and it's nearest focus of 0.38m(aperture= f/8), the photo shows every single trace of yellow pollen at the centre of the flower!!!!! It's amazing!! I have tried the new 24-120mm ED VR which is as sharp as this len and seems to give higher colour saturation. But for close-focus optical performance, 24-85mm ED is no doubt a winner. 24-120mm ED VR lose a bit of sharpness when it's come to it's nearest 0.5m focus distance. For this price, I am very happy with this len. The only complaint is the "dust collection power" of this len, I can see many trace of dust collected just behind the front glass element after the first few days I bought it . This wont happen to my 70-210mm f/3.5-5.6, 50mm f/1.8D, and even the cheap 28-80mm G.

    Strength:

    - light weight - focusing speed - silient (wisper)

    Weakness:

    - 67mm filter. - Wished that the zoom placement could be at the neck rather than the focus.

I use the lense with my Fuji FinePix S2pro. With the 1.5x focal length mag. the distortions are not noticed. This is an extrodinary lens for the price. I sold my Tokina 28-85 f2.8, as I found that I could not use it wide open, as the resulting shots were soft. That being so, there was no point in carrying the weight of it. The Nikon 24-80 AFS is incredibly sharp wide open. Wish that Nikon could make it a constant 3.5. The S2pro uses the same focusing mechanism as that of the Nikon F80. On a non AF-S lense the focusing speed is not as one may expect with the "pro" designation. Paired with the 28-85 AF-S, I no longer have any complaints with the focus speed. I am so convinced of the AF-S capabilities that I have sold my older 80-200 F2.8 Nikon, and will be getting the new 70-200 AFS VR f2.8.

I have been using a Tamron 28-200 lens for the last 2 years ans always new something was not right. My first roll back with this lens blew me away. Super sharp and bright with color saturation beyonf my expectations. I really feel like I can shoot like a pro. At 24 and 85 the lens performs great. The silent autofocus is smooth and fast. My pictures look like it was done with a prime lens. I also picked up the 70-300mm ed which is equally amazing. I am thrilled with this lens. Extra bonus is the slick lens cap and sun shield very nice. Great lens

The 24-85 AFS G lens makes a superb standard lens and certainly outperforms the new 24-120 VR lens at equivalent focal lengths (It is a full stop faster at the important 85mm focal length). I ran a 'real life' test of this lens against a 24-85 Contax N lens and was surprised to discover that there was very little difference between the two lenses in terms of sharpness and color saturation. It is a delight to use... AFS is fast and quiet, focus is very smooth with just the right 'feel' and at .88 lbs it makes the perfect standard lens if you appreciate the 24mm starting focal length.

I bought this lens for a trip to Puerto Rico. This lens is a very good investment. Focusing is very quiet, fast and accurate. Aesthetically is a gem and well built. It did not fail me once through the whole trip (the pictures taken showed) even with the humid/hot climate. Pictures pin sharp at all apertures and focal lenghts using Fuji Velvia and Provia. It might be sharper than the new 24-120 AFS (Im in the process of finding out.

    Color Sharpness AFS Fast!

    Weakness:

    Plastic!

I have used several Nikon zooms through the last five years and I think this zoom is a great preformer. I found (in contrast to the reviewer before me) that this lens is sharper than the Nikkor 28-105D (wich is a good preformer), the Nikkor 2.8-4 24-85D and the 'old' 24-50 Nikkor. In the past I have used the 2.8 35-70D Nikkor but I sold it because it has some autofocus problems with the Nikon F5, specially at close distance (I use to have an F4s and it worked great with that camera). I think the 2.8 35-70 lens is a little bit sharper but this lens is very sharp too and shows details in my pictures that were somewhat blurry with other lenses. I am very pleased with it. Read the reviews of Ken Rockwell (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/2485afs.htm) or Thom Hogan (http://www.bythom.com/2485lens.htm)for more details.

    Strength:

AF-S Lightweight Contrast 24mm focal length Lens cap design.

    Weakness:

Sharpness only OK. Somewhat flimsy, even compared to other Nikon consumer lenses.

This lens has some very good characteristics and some not so good characteristics. It is lightweight and the zoom ring is easily utilized. Contrast is very good to excellent. The lens cap is a pretty neat design that makes is possible to remove it easily with the hood on. The AF-S is very nice and so quiet that the first time I used it I didn't think it was focusing. Those are the good things. The two bad things about the lens are its lack of sharpness and it's cheap build. I compared this lens against many other Nikon and other lens manufacturers lenses and it always came up short in terms of sharpness. It is not as sharp as my Nikon 35-70mm, not as sharp as my Tokina 28-70mm and even not as sharp as my Nikon 28-105mm. The lens reviews on photozone.de agree with me. My 'star' ratings are high because of the AF-S which make this a good value. Also I only paid $259 for it with the rebate.
