Strength:
Simplicity and lighness. Sharp and good contrast. Inexpensive. It is enough. This lense was included in the F80 camera. At the beginning I refused to use it too much due to my very agressive outdoor hobbies: trecking and Fly fishing. Howebver I read a comments to Galen Rowell about the simplicity and lighness in his equipment. My Pictures quality is excellent. The lens very good partner for my N80. Sharp and contrast glass. Inexpensive. It is a must for ligh journeys. Customer Service None Similar Products Used: Nikkor 24mm 2.8D, 50mmm 1.8AF, 100-300mm, 105 mm Macro 2.8D ... |

Price Good color light weight
Weakness:
Slow plastic mount I will have to say that for an entry level lens, it is pretty good. I have found it to be sharper than I expected. Colors are very good, I have not noticed any vignetting or flaring. I recently sold it as I upgraded to a better Nikon body, and sold it with an N60....I upgraded to the 28-105 which is much better, Bottom line. Not bad for beginners and "candid Photography" Customer Service Not needed Similar Products Used: Nikon 70-300 4-5.6 ED D Nikon 28-105 3.5-4 D Nikon 80-200 2.8 (borrowed) 50mm 1.4(?) Pentax SMC |

Weakness:
plastic construction like what my NOVICE photographer friend said: it feels like a TOY. every thing about it. mine wouldn''t even focus on infinity at the 80mm mark! rotten AF performance. Easily the worst plastic thing i had ever used. It is manufactured broken really. Too bad a lot of people got this lens as a bundled package with their camera purchase(like the N60) Customer Service not needed. Similar Products Used: real nikkors and series E(hey series e the consumer grade product back in the late 70s to mid 80s and they are WAY BETTER than these new ''nikkors'') |

Strength:
This particular lens has necessary focal distances for landscape and portrait.
Weakness:
Distortion. I am not considering myself as a great photo-professional but even I can see distortion. Recently, I shoot some landscape, such as peer and skyscrapers. Despite, the fact that skyscrapers were far away and my camera was on a tripod the resulting photo I got showed some distortion regarding skyscraper. It (skyscraper) was bend a little bit. Moreover, I could see this distortion on average 4 by 6 inch photo. You can imagine how more distorted in could be on 8 by10 print, furthermore I wasn't that near skyscraper (1/2 mile from it). I bought this lens in a Nikon N60 kit. Don't buy it (just my opinion). Better to buy Nikon 50mm. Customer Service don't need it yet Similar Products Used: series or Russian made lens (NO Good) |

superlight
Weakness:
slow long end This lens is superlight and has a very useful range. Very fast focussing, but uses 58 filters. This lense is sharp, sharper than the last 35-80D normal lens, but contrast is not high, just average. This is good for detail and smooth tones like for portraits, but does not help make for snappy, contrasty pics. Color rendition is cool. For sure use ISO400 for the long end. All in all a sharp, very light with a large gripping surface. Pair it with the 80-200 4.5 and you have a quick, light 28-200 setup at very low cost for consistent Nikon quality. I am eagerly awaiting Nikon's VR lenses for use with low light photography. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Good value and nice focal range for what is the current offering in most Nikon kits sold. An excellent choice for the beginner. Mine's worked flawlessly, and is relatively quiet.
Weakness:
While this lens is a good value, if you know you're going to stick the with the hobby/profession/compulsion, you might want to wait and get the pro version. But for the casual photographer, it's more than adequate to handle his or her needs. While I use my other lenses more, this one remains in my bag, and is certainly a viable option. One reason I'm kind of tied to it is because most of my specialty filters were purchased for this lens in my initial enthusiasm. I'm not afraid to use it, for I haven't noticed any flaring (nor have I blown any shot up to a very large scale). Should I come across 'the shot' with this lens attached, I'll try and back it off of 85mm. Customer Service Haven't needed. Similar Products Used: None within this general focal range. I'll generally opt for a my longer focal length lens when I want a zoom, or I |

Strength:
This is a great lens for a beginner, as it is light and inexpensive. I would look at someone with a N50/N60/N70 starting off with this lens. It gives pretty good sharpness and picture quality for prints of 4x6.
Weakness:
This is not a lens suitable for large enlargements. Also, there is a lot of flare that this lens suffers, and as a result is not quite suitable for night photography when you have all these lights on your side. Also it has a plasticky build and needs to be handled carefully. Overall, a reasonably good lens for a beginner on a budget. A good lens to start learning photography with, and you could always move on to something better once you hone your skills. I thing the three main advantages of this lens are: its lightweight, its inexpensive, and its of a good zoom range 28-80! Customer Service Not needed it yet.
