Strength:
Absolutley incredible lens, one of Nikon's best zooms ever. It's become the standard lens on my camera. Sharp at 2.8 at all focal lengths. About six ounces lighter than new 17-35. Flare well controlled.
Weakness:
None Even though the new 17-35 zoom with the Silent Wave motor has replaced this lens the 20-35 is still a hot item if you can find one. I just purchased one at Samy's Camera for $999 (used the $200 credit for Nikon accessories towards the price of the lens). The lens focuses quickly with the N90s. Compared to the 17-35 it's much cheaper now, even though you don't get the extra coverage at the wide end and it doesn't have the silent wave motor (which for me I don't need). One aspect of the 20-35 that doesn't get mentioned when comparing it to the 17-35 is that the 20-35 has a gound glass ashperic element (the 17-35 has Nikon's new glass molded aspheric lenses). Ground glass is only found in Nikon's 58mm NOCT and 28 f1.4 lenses (extremely time-consuming and expensive but superior quality). My guess is that if Nikon put a gound glass aspheric element(s) in the 17-35 the street price would have pushed it beyond $2000. Anyway, the 20-35 is marvelous. Nice wide manual focus ring and crinkle finish like the 80-200 2.8 D. If you like wide angle shots you'll love this lens. I highly recommend it. Excellent wide angle zoom lens. Sharp, good contrast and very well built.
Weakness:
None so far, except for the high price. This is a very good zoom wide angle lens. Deliver sharp and very good contrast. I was tempted to upgrade to 17-35/2.8 but don't think that I need the 17mm that much. With the lower price, go get this lens. Customer Service None needed so far. A good, one lens for wide angle use
Weakness:
At 20mm-28mm I get Chromatic aberration, on the edge of the image. Which is a fine red line on the edge. Which makes that area, soft. I thought this lens would be sharper, but it is soft on the edge, because of chromatic aberration. Since I own this lens, my use of it, might be limited. I like my lens to be sharp, not matter who makes it. I am on the waiting list for the 17mm-35mm lens. Customer Service None yet Similar Products Used: None |

Ultra sharp, high contrast. Amazingly free of flare in high contrast lighting situations. f2.8 aperture is maintained over zoom range
Weakness:
Large and heavy (but worth it) A superb lens! I now use it as the primary lens on my camera. The 20 mm end edges up on being extreme, so I have doubts that 17 - 35 mm would be much more useful. Customer Service Haven't tried. Similar Products Used: 24 mm Nikkor, 24 mm Pentax |

Sharp and contrasty...images leap out at you.
Weakness:
Needs a hyperfocal scale. A fantastic lens in every way. I like wide angles and this one compares very nicely with the primes it covers. It could use a hyperfocal scale and focus a little closer. The new 17-35/2.8 is said to be better, but I can't imagine it would be worth the price difference. This lens now sells for under $1000.00...buy it! before it goes away. Great lens. Combines the common lengths of 20, 24, 28, and 35mm in a single lens, at a reasonable speed. Very solid construction, not too big considering all you get.
Weakness:
None. If you want a single lens to cover essentially all wide angle work (unless you need extreme speed or ultra close focusing), this is a great choice. And now that Nikon has dropped the price because of the new 17-35mm f/2.8, this lens is now a great value too. Very sharp
Weakness:
None This was my most used favourite lens before I traded it in for the AF-S 17-35/2.8. It travelled around the world with me in some hostile environments giving me consistently brilliant results. Linear distortion is a tad better controlled than the AF-S lens. Construction is second to none. Ii is regrettable that I am not able to own both these superb lenses! Strength:
Very sharp, very solid-feeling lens with excellent optical quality. Nice focusing feel in manual focus mode; works well on all my bodies, AF or MF. Heavy but not excessively so. Comes with a nice custom lens case.
Weakness:
The optional hood should be included in the price, and should be made of a better quality plastic. It's impossible to use a polarizing filter with the hood on, and difficult to get the lens cap on and off. 77mm filters are expensive, but this is unavoidable with a lens so wide and fast. Worth the price - even if it is the most expensive photographic purchase I've ever made. This lens will remain in my bag for a long time. Customer Service Lens was backordered due to high demand after price decrease, but I got it in a reasonable period of time. Strength:
Superb lens. I think it is better than the Nikkor 20mm 2.8D prime I use to own. I know it has less barrel distortion, I did tests on it before selling the 20mm. I used it in my former photojournalist job and waited until I found one for a good price.
Weakness:
None as far as the lens go. Hood is a little cheap for the price they charge for it. I've used most of the Nikkors out there at one time or the other and this is truely a keeper!! I tried the new 17-35 AFS 2.8 D and it also was excellent but for the money this is a better deal!! Always be patient as far as new/used equipment is concerned and you will usually be rewarded.
