Strength:
light weight.
Weakness:
poor quietly, easily breaks, over cast This was my first Lens other then the 50mm. Yes it was pretty cheap, I just learned the meaning you get what you paid for....After only having it a year my lens is now broke. Im upset only cause Im with out a lens till my new "L" one gets here. The quietly of the lens is not very good, cheap plastic but easy to carry and light weight. It gets alot of overcast instead of a nice lens flair. It does not take a very good sharp picture color is pretty bad on it too. It is fast and handy. But since mine broke Im pretty upset with this lens. |

Strength:
Accurate and extremely quick auto-focus. Light-weight. Cost.
Weakness:
Rotating front elemant. Flare (this is a problem with alot of lenses though). I notice that the 28-90mm USM lense is taking alot of flack. As a general purpose lense it is fine. I am a travel photographer and tend to take this lense on the road because of its light weight, near silent and extremely fast auto focus system. Granted, the focus ring is annoying especially when a polerizer filter is attached but this is no great problem. For those who enjoy photography as a hobby, this lense is more than ideal and is superior to other lenses in the same price bracket!!! Strength:
Light Cheap (no great loss iff you bounce it off a rock while hiking) Reasonably fast focusing Zoom covers day to day needs
Weakness:
Light (cos it is plastic) Not as sharp as some of canons other lenses (and I don't mean the primes) As a light lens to keep on the camera most of the time this lens is great. I also have an EOS 1000 (v. light) and with this lens on it you have an acceptable lightweight SLR that takes some great shots. Not a lens for the serious shots for anyone who wants a lightweight slr kit handy at all times (as most good photographers would...) then this is the perfect lens. Customer Service Not used, although a friend had one repaired by canon UK and it was sorted in a week. Strength:
Cheap Silent Sharp enough pictures. AF is pretty fast in general use.
Weakness:
For the price cant complain much. :) Focusing ring can be better The flare(?) I was mentioning about. I have this same lens. Some reviews of it stating that it comes as a bundle may be the non USM version. This is a pretty decent lens. Not a good one but good lenses dont come at this price. Pictures are sharp. There may be some issues with flare(at 28mm and at open shots of scenery facing the sun), but I wasnt using a lens hood. :) It feels plasticy and hunts at low light but besides that it performs fine. Focusing ring can be better but the similar Nikon lens also comes with this same silly type of focusing ring. Lastly, I have just developed photos taken with this lens and am pretty impressed. No complains except for the one I mentioned earlier(flare?). Customer Service Not needed as yet. Similar Products Used: EF 35-80mm II f/4-5.6 EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 USM EF 50mm II f/1.8 |

This is a perfectly good amateur lense. It's a pity that so many reviews of it are disparaging, as it must be one of the most widely used lenses at the moment. For most people who make the move from 'point and shoot' to SLR photography, very few of the very critical (unfair?) comments will apply to the casual photographer who wants to take good pictures. Take your time and learn to use the features of the camera itself (EOS 300), think about composition, experiment with film, be creative, have fun, and don't worry about negative reviews from those who have advanced to another level of photography (sometimes prematurely). I think you'll find that this lense works well enough as a learning tool, and you'll be delighted to discover that it is YOU who will take great shots (not the lense). |

Strength:
Bargin basement price Light (if you have weak wrists) Decent zoom range if you don't mind that compromise Quiet as a mouse
Weakness:
Soft, distorted, unbalanced images Looks cheap and feels cheaper Hunts too long in low light No no no no! Tried it as the standard inclusive lens with my EOS 30, hated it, bought Sigma 28-70 Ex instead at 8 times the price, more than worth it. This lens feels like it's going to break in your hands, particularly the feeble manual focus on the front ring. If a fly landed on it, it would move the focus in MF mode. I'm dissapointed in Canon who normally knock out quality gear, but luckily was warned in advance about its poor performance by the salesman. Weakness:
Extremly Plasticy Zoom is rough Makes plasticy noises when you turn zoom ring Soft Slow Hunts in low light MF is just a little ring at the end of lens-really bad This lens is probably the worst lens canon makes. I used it for about a year and then I bought the Sigma 28-70 F2.8 EX DF. Wouldnt reccomend this lens for reasons listed below Similar Products Used: Sigma 28-70mm 2.8 EX DF Canon EF 70-200mm F4L- |

Strength:
Cheap as chips - there's a reason why. Cosmetic appearance matches the EOS300
Weakness:
Barrel distortion at 28mm!!! Slow AF No FTM focus Front element moves when focusing - bad for filters First of all, this is a review for the non-USM version commonly packages with the EOS300/Rebel 2000. I have never had any shots taken with this lense blown up - most of them are soooo flat at 6 x 4 that it's not worth it. Sharpness is poor, especially wide open. Stopping down to f8 or f11 does help, but is no match for better glass (besides, how often can you get away with using f8 or f11 indoors/ at night). AF is painfully slow, but maybe the USM version is better? Most alarming about this lense is the barrel distortion at 28mm. The distortion is easily visible on 6 x 4 pictures - even my mother could see it!! Treat this lense as a 35-90mm f8-11 to get acceptable pictures. Better still, buy your camera body separate and the 28-105, 28-135 IS or 28-200 - this will make a far superior combo. Customer Service Not used.
