Strength:

Fast, quiet, extremely shart but warmly feel for portrait photo. Color is wonderful

Weakness:

Expensive and bulky

I have considered to upgrade my 28-105 for a few months (28-105 is also a pretty good lens) because it was so difficult to get one more lens in the same range.
Finally, I bought it for my brother's wedding and found never regret.
I can see every details in my mother face. I can focus to a little big eyes baby in a close distance. I can see a sharp details for portriat photo but not as solid as a hard cold building.
I always take photo for people in church and party and find that the range is good (but still dream for a 24 - 100mm 2.8L come true).
Conclusion: It's expensive and bulky but USD$1050 is really worth without regret.

Strength:

Quiet, fast focusing, sharp contrasty pictures. Smooth manual focus and blindingly fast auto focus.

Weakness:

Very heavy

This is a very sharp zoom that is exceptionally quiet, very fast focusing, and it produces contrasty pictures. I sold my Tokina Pro ll 28-70mm f2.6/2.8 and I wasn't sure if it was money well spent. It was and I don't regrett it. The Tokina was a great lenas for the price but there is a difference in the image quality with the canon having a decided edge. Expensive but worth it.

Strength:

Wonderful feel, tack sharp, and just a dream to handle, like the eos1v, this has a top quality feel to it.

Weakness:

none

This is my favorite lens ever. If I could only have one lens, I would have this one and sneak the 70-200 f2.8. I will use this lens more, by far than any other in my bag. Buy this lens at any cost. It is a must have.

Strength:

Extremely fast AF. Great resolution and sharpness. Balances great on my A2. Price (bought it in the states...WAY cheaper than Canada...even with CPS prices???).

Weakness:

none.
This is the best lens in this category for a Canon camera. Period.
If only Canon had a longer warranty on their lenses like Tamron.

Every time I use this lens I have fun.
There are people out there who will say a 17-35, 50, and 70-200 is the best combination of lenses, but try working as a photojournalist with a 50 stuck on you lens.
In situations where your subject or you are in constant movement, you will need this gem of a lens.
I've noticed photographers from USA talking about how expensive these pro lenses are. Try living in Canada and you will know expensive. We are paying almost twice as much for the same item, and yet it is still worth it.
Keep up the good work Canon!

Strength:

Ultimate sharpness, contrast, and color saturation at all apertures. Absence of distortion. Fast, silent AF. Very sturdy construction.

Weakness:

None.

I was reluctant prior to the purchase of the 28-70 L zoom lens. Firstly, I suspected that the owners of this expensive lens tended to overrate it to justify their purchase. Secondly, the specified size and weight of the lens appear to negate the spontaneous nature of 35 mm photography. Surprisingly however, I became addicted to this lens just after the first roll of film made with it. Its optical performance is breathtaking. At any focal length, its performance could even be better than that of my prime EF 50 mm f/1.4 lens, especially in terms of contrast and color saturation. My 4x6 prints looked like postcards. Beside, it is much lighter than what I expected, and appears smaller as I get used to holding it every day. This lens is mounted permanently (and balanced nicely) on my EOS-1n as its range of 28-70 mm matches my interests in photojournalism and wedding documentary. Its sturdy construction allows me to ignore the weather conditions so as to concentrate only on the making of photographs.

This is the zoom lens with ultimate performance. And you will feel guilty about the price you pay for it until you receive the first batch of slides ...

Strength:

Outstanding sharpness & contrast. This is a fine, fine zoom that comes astoundingly close to prime quality. Images are tack sharp at all apertures. Any complaints I might have about softness at 2.8 more due to shallow depth of field, or my own haste in firing off the shot.

Weakness:

Flare is a persistent problem with this lens. The hood goes a long way toward preventing flare, although there are instances when it is simply unavoidable -- sunsets, for example. I find this to be quite frustating, given the price of the lens.

Having recently switched over from Nikon (sorry guys, I couldn't help myself . . .) I couldn't be happier. Nikon makes great gear, but Canon's technology is unbeatable, and a good bit less expensive for equal, or better technology and features. This lens is unbelievably sharp, clear and contrasty. Colors are excellent. My only complaint is the flare problem, but shooting directly into the sun is a problem with any zoom -- and most primes, as well. I'd recommend this lens to anyone -- and I must say that the difference in price between this and the Tokina or Tamron lenses is more than justified. Yeah, it was a lot of money, but all I have to do is look at my images and the money seems less important -- much less important! Five stars in my book.

Strength:

Extremely sharp, very fast and effective AF, very little distortion, solidly made

Weakness:

None that I've experienced

If you're a very demanding photographer using Canons, cough up/save up the money for this lens as it clearly superior to the alternatives. The 20-35L (and probably the 17-35L)is also a keeper. Prior to buying this lens I tried a 24-85EF and a Tokina 28-70 ATX Pro II. The latter was sharp but had focusing problems, the former was not quite sharp. This lens just makes me smile. Comments have been made about it's size and weight but I haven't found that to be an issue at all. In fact my L lenses balance better on my D30 than the lighter EFs do.

A bit pricey, but well worth it.
large lens hood blocks built in strobe of camera. (remove hood when shooting w/build in strobe)

If you get one primary lens, this should be it.
I'm using it on a D30 and love it.
very impressive looking lens, very functional, fast focus. Great Glass - I love my 80-200 2.8 but I think this may become my favorite.

This is my primary lense. With this one you do not need to waste money on 28, 35 and 50 mm prime. I bought a 50/1.4 used but so far I have not even used it because with this 28-70/2.8 there is no need for another prime within the focal range.
