Strength:
Superb optics, good build, AF simply rips.
Weakness:
Big and heavy. This has got to be one of the most superb 2x-7x lenses manufactured. I bought this (used) after saving up enough money, and upgraded from my 28-105. When I got back my first batch of Velvia, I was amazed at the difference between the two. Even wide open, the lens is very sharp. I love the f/2.8 aperture, which allows me to shoot hand-held in low light. The AF simply rips, and is almost instantaneous on my EOS-3. I frankly can't tell any difference between the slides I've shot with this lens and those with my 50/1.8 and 24/2.8 primes. Distortion is extremely well controlled for a zoom, specially compared to some of the Tokina and Sigma f/2.8 zooms I've used in this range. I almost purchased a Tokina zoom in this range but ran into focusing problems with my Elan-7e. The tokina would consistently focus a little too close. In addition, both the Tokina and Sigma f/2.8's I tried were soft at f/2.8-f/4. If I'm gonna shoot at f/5.6 or smaller I may as well stick to my old 28-105 zoom. However, it's not easy to carry along when I want to travel light. It's big and heavy, and needs a big bag to carry. However it's much better than the Nikkor offering which is both bigger and heavier than this lens. Customer Service Never needed any. Strength:
Solid built, sharp, great color rendition, convenient. 3 primes in one - 28/35/50mm. Canon, keeps up with great optics.
Weakness:
A little heavy and big size. No doubtly expensive but worth every penny. I bought this lens together with the EOS 3, 70-200/2.8L and 550EX. Very well balanced on EOS 3. Magnificant color rendition, great sharpness and contrast even wide open. I very often shoot at 2.8-4.0 and didn't experience any flare. Very little distortion ! I shot wedding pictures using this lens and the 70-200/2.8L and they were very happy with the pictures. Eventually, my friend got interested in photography and bought this lens and EOS 3 and 70-200/4L. FYI, I was a Nikon user and I converted to Canon AF gears because of these sharp L zoom lens. In fact, the 28-70/2.8L is the sharpest zoom in this range, rated by photodo.com. Will never sell it! Customer Service Never used so far. Strength:
Optics, mechanics, Distortion is the best I've seen on a zoom.
Weakness:
Heavy (for the casual thing), needed for pro-use Just great value, handles perfect, delivers quality (sharpness, color...) time and time again, Hood is perfect for all focal settings. It's heavy, but good balnce on EOS 3,1V, etc., specially with the booster. Customer Service not needed so far, Similar Products Used: All kinds of Zooms, from Nikon as well |

Sharpness, contrast, build quality.
Weakness:
After spending so much money I would like to take distortion free images and this lense have visible pincossion distortion. I bought this lense after reading review on this site. After more that one years use I can report that this is probabely the best zoom in its range. I wont complain about its size or weight. Its very sharp and contrasty. This lense stay on my EOS1v for 90% of my work. Therefore pincussion distortion towards the edges is visible. Its MTF value is 3.8 out of 5. I would like to mention that 70-200 F4 is more sharper than this one and they make very good combination. I shoot wedding most of the time and my images brings smile on my client's faces perphaps over and over again. When it's on your camera, you know it is the best you can do. The rest is up to you.
Weakness:
None. My camera and/or I am not as good as this lens. I was doing as well with my 28-135 IS and my mind tells me this is impossible. Mark this up to, "Beats the hell out of me!". I own it & I'll keep it but I don't know how to get D30 results like the ones I have seen with this combo. Customer Service Never used. Similar Products Used: 28-135 IS |

Strength:
Sharp Fast focus
Weakness:
Lens moves back and forth (dust gets in) MF is not as smooth as I would like it to be Price - it is greatly over-priced Wide angle is as weak as Tokina's, not close in performance to prime lenses I bought this lens to have two 27-70 f2.8 lenses on hand when I do weddings. The other one I own is Tokina Pro 28-70mm f2.6-2.8. Here are my observations after the two weddings and about 1000 pictures I took. The lens is very sharp, quick to react, and silent. I never had to rely on the manual focus, and about 98% of my pictures were sharp. So why did I buy Canon even if I liked Tokina? I hoped to improve my photographs. Now, after lookng at these two lenses, I I can say that I could never determine which lens was used for my pictures when both were st at my traditional f5.6. Tokna is soft at 2.8, but I do not know about Canon. The focusing speed is similar, it is the silence of the Canon's lens that created that illusin of supersonic speed. I use them both on my EOS-3, and they both perform very well. I do not like to use f2.8 becuase I lose depth of field, no matter which lens I use. And when I want to shoot at available light, I use f1.4 FA Pentax prime (fantastic lens!). Tokina is better made, but I do not like its transition to/from MF. It makes some noise when focusing, but I like it - at least I know something is happening. Also, whn they both are set at 28mm, the people who are close to the edges are distorted. I hoped that canon would be much batter in this area, but it is not. Bottom line: if you want to think that you are a better photographer, pehaps Canon will help you. If you know what you are doing and are too smart to spend 1000 dollars, then Tokina is a finer choice. I would never recommend it to people who do not make money using camera equipment. And for serious amateurs, primes are better anyway. I use primes when I want the best qaulity. Zooms are just a matter of convinience. During the wedding every second counts, so I must use zooms most of the time. For portraits, I go with primes only. Customer Service Much worse than Pentax. Sometimes they ignore questions.
