Strength:

Sharpness - Resonably sharp Contrast - Okay Colours - Good Build Quality - Okay USM - Fast

Weakness:

Dark corners in all my indoor shots, with or without flash and at all zoom range. (without any filters) Vignetting dissapears in outdoor or bright scenes.

Don't expect this lens to be as good as Canon's L series. Once your expectation is in perspective with the value, then this is a great lens. Great for landscape, potraits and infact for overall general photography!! Very versatile. I have no problem with the 67mm filter size as mentioned by many other reviewers, coz I'm using Cokin P series filters, all I need is to buy the adapter ring to fit various filter sizes!!

Strength:

sharpness and colours good distortion no vignetting-good on DSLRs :best value for money right now.

Weakness:

Hmm for this price?? well i dont know? only weaknessis the lack of L glass perhaps?(APO) but who cares? if the prints LOOK like IT-then what could complain about?

This is another one of Canons sweet best buys!Used on DSLRs (d30,d60,d10,d300rebel)you will get very surprised ! and you will instantly think of the better made L lenses from Canon when you see the prints! The AF Usm works very fast the speed is good 3,5 to 4,5 sharpness and colours is very fine especially stopped down to F5,6 and F8 ; in short, you wont regret buying this lens whether youre a pro or happy amateur-it seems to fullfill any needs you may have for a good lens-and often i hear form other photographers it is the only NON L glass they use daily.!

Strength:

USM focusing Neutral color reproduction Good contrast

Weakness:

Offers only f4.5 on the long end Sharpness is so-so Soft in the corners below f11

It's a fine lens for a beginner. Fast-focusing, with netural colors, great contrast and acceptable sharpness. The only problem with it is (I think) it cost too much. For almost $400 there are at least two better 3rd party lenses: Tokina 28-80 AT-X Pro II and Sigma 28-70mm EX DF. They're both sharper and better built, Sigma also offers usable f2.8. However if you're interested in shooting some action, USM focusing offered by this Canon cannot be beat by those 3rd party lenses.

Strength:

Light , compact handy focal length range, good handling.

Weakness:

Weak optically at the edges at all focal lengths, low contrast at 85 mm. Marked distortion at most focal lengths.

A compact, light, general purpose zoom with a useful range of focal lengths. Handling is good with FTM and USM. No zoom creep.Sharpness is good to very good in the centre at 24 to 50 mm focal length. Sharpness poor at the edges wide open at all focal lengths and just fair stopped down. Poor contrast across the frame at 85 mm . Some vignetting at the corners at the shorter focal lengths, not serious. Flare is about average for this type of lens, ie easily produced with sun in or just outside the frame. Distortion is strong barrel at 24 mm, nil at 28 mm and strong pincushion from 35 to 85 mm.

Strength:

Good build Nice range Sharp on D30 Fast, quiet focus

Weakness:

Slow aperture

I bought it used on ebay. This is a great all around lens. I have never used it on a film body but on my Canon D30 it produces sxcellent results. Even wide open. Stopped down to f8 or f11 and it is almost as sharp as the 28-70L. Good contrast and saturation. Focus is fast and quiet. I really have no complaints with it. For what I paid for it, how could I complain?

Strength:

Nice and sharp for a zoom. Fantastic range of focal lengths. very little distortion at 24mm

Weakness:

Progressively more pincushion distortion towards 85mm.

Well all in all it's a pretty good lens. As with all lenses it's sharpest at about f/8. I've taken hand held happy-snaps of friends and been able to clearly see the stitching on their shirts from 3m. I was impressed! Anyway, I've been very happy with the lens. Quite recently I've discovered a bit of distortion and here's the curious thing... It's distortion is least when it's at 24-28mm!! How strange is that? It's good but pincushion distortion is quite noticeable when you zoom in on buildings and the like. All in all, I love it.

Strength:

The zoom action is absolutely perfect on my lens. The zoom range is great from 24-85. On a D60, you don't have to worry too much about vignetting.

Weakness:

Not sharp below f/6.3. On my EOS A2e, vignetting showed up at 24mm.

I typically use this lens handheld. I have had this lens for around 5+ years (I got it with my EOS IX). It is a great lens in bright light. It's limits show up when you need

Customer Service

My local shop is great. I've been using this lens with three camera bodies and the same guy has serviced me this whole time. He's been great.

Strength:

Zoom range is perfect 24 mm end is great Size and price are good Colours good

Weakness:

Barrel extension when zooming feels a bit sloppy. This has already trapped some grit. Sharpness and contrast get shown up by more expensive lenses (100 mm macro)

I bought this as the standard lens on a new EOS 33 instead of the usual 28-80. As a base lens, it is very good; great zoom range, especially the 24 mm end; light but not too light; unobtrusive size for carrying around and doesn't intimidate strangers; focussing speed is pretty good (but I'm new to this AF thing). I have taken some really great architectural and sky slides with the 24 mm end. I did notice the vignetting at 24 mm on prints when I forgot to take off the UV filter before adding the polarising filter. Didn't show up otherwise. The 85 mm end is pretty good for quick shots of people, but I have been spoiled by later buying a 100 mm 2.8 macro USM - this is the lens you should save for.

Customer Service

Very good when buying the lens. Advice was sound. Hasn't needed follow-up yet.

Strength:

24mm at wide-angle

Weakness:

not sharp enuf and color not so vivid.

using this lens for more than 3 years, i hv used this lens on EOS 500N and EOS 5 and tried many rolls of films. i can never get a "wow!" result picture. not sharp enuf and medium saturation. just better than a crap. even worse than my last used EF 28-80mm. only the 24mm at wide end lets me still keep it. i hv changed to tamron 24-135mm and hence know i hv waste my time on this crap.

Strength:

Cheap Fast Quality

Weakness:

a bit of zoom creep

This is a wonderful lens for ths price. It focuses fast and relatively sharp, even adequate for architecture on the wide end. The build is solid. Just wished it was faster but Canon doesn''t make a 24mm wide fast zoom. Just waiting for a 24-70 f2.8.
