Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM 35mm Zoom

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

Extended coverage to an ultra-wide angle 24mm makes it ideal for digital as well as film shooters, and the optics are even better than before with two Aspherical elements and a totally new UD glass element. It''s now sealed and gasketed against dust and moisture, and a new processing unit makes the AF faster than ever.

Strength:

Solid, robust, dust proof, water proof, fast focus, quiet. Images are sharp, colour true and saturated.

Weakness:

Lens body entends/contracts when zooming

Following the purchase of the 70-200 F4L I have been addicted to L glass and 6 weeks ago bought the dream lens 24-70 F2.8 L for a trip along the southern coast of France from Barcelona to Monaco. The lens certainly maintains the reputation of the L quality. I have shot 10 rolls with this lens using consumer Fuji chrome film and the slides look like pro films with rich colour saturation, super contrast, and incredible sharpness. Like all lens at wide end 24mm the tall building lines converge as expected and causes no concern. Similar to the 70-200 F4 the lens focuses extremely fast and quiet, no hunting at all and dead accurate with my EOS 5. Eith an EOS 1V speed would be better for sure. The lens is of course heavier than the 28-135 IS however that is a price for the robustness and build quality. The weight is manageable as I carry the camera all day without wrist/arm problem and my age is a few months short of 50. The large hood is very effective and although it draws people attention, it is worthwhile to retain it with the lens all the times. The only gripe I have with this lens is the body changes its length when zooming. I would prefer a fixed body length and the extension/contraction happens inside the sealed body like the 70-200 F4. In my opinion this lens does not require IS as 70mm is hardly tele at all. Overall I am very happy with it and if you can only afford one lens, it is this lens that you must own as its focal length is the most versatile and would cover most situation.

Strength:

Durability and quickness in focusing. The glass on this lens is incredible.

This lens was purchased for my Canon Eos 1Ds 11-megapixel digital camera...and boy' this is one amazing accessory. The essence of colors and sharpness that it captures is something else. A must for any photo journalist, studio or an all-around type photographers.

Strength:

Bright. Sharp. Fast, quiet autofocus.

Weakness:

Kinda heavy. Fairly big. Obscenely expensive if you're just starting out.

This is one *seriously* sharp midrange zoom. It makes consumer-grade film look like pro-grade, and pro-grade look like you peeled the image directly off your retina. I specialize in local independent pro-wrestling matches, and the zoom range is just about right for catching all the in-ring action (although I wouldn't mind ratcheting the high end of the zoom up to 135mm to grab some of the wrestlers' expressions). My lens also survived an accidental beer showering from one tag team (gotta love that waterproofing) and a direct collision with a wrestler who got thrown through the ring and right into me. Since I scan the negatives directly into Photoshop, I'm a real bear for image sharpness, and this lens delivers. Someday I'll invest in a couple of good primes for portrait work, but in the interim this lens will stand as my does-everything-and-does-it-d***-well solution.

Strength:

Image quality, sharpness and contrast. Build Smooth, quick and silent focusing.

Weakness:

Cost Weight Size even without lens hood Would be nice if it went to 105 or 135 with IS as well.

I got this for my 10D after buying and being very impressed with the 17-40L lens. Initially I was not as taken with it as I was the 17-40 but now having used it a bit more I am very impressed. It is heavy , big and costs alot but if you want the best possible image then go for it! I do not regret buying it at all and the difference in image quality -at least on my 10D- between 'normal' Canon lenses and their 'L' counterparts it very noticeable once you start to enlarge. The 10D seems to 'need' a good lens which for me has been expensive but rewarding now I see such quality results.

Strength:

sharp! build quality

Weakness:

are there any? i haven't found any yet.

this lens is beautiful! sharp at all apetures and light falloff at f2.8 is slight and gone by f4. did i mention it is sharp? took spill the other day and the front of the lens hit the hard asphalt. lens was fine (luckily i remembered to attach the lens cap while i was walking around)this would have destroyed any cheaper lens.had to call canon parts dept. for a new filter ring. damage was't bad ,but just enough to prevent attaching a filter. the filter is an easy fix so i saw no need to ship it out for repairs(i'm mechanically inclined enough for this kind of thing).what more can i say, you will easily get your moneys worth out it just for build quality alone.

Customer Service

Very Good , had order new filter ring for 24-70 f2.8. item in stock and on the way.

Strength:

Superior construction,quiet,fast,great resolution,low distortion,excellent range,fair price,good close focus.

Weakness:

Time will tell, this is a superlative lens designed to overcome the weaknesses of its predecessors and competitors.

I purchased this lens for use on a Canon 10D.My main point is that this lens in terms of the 1.6X factor is splendid for an all round high end zoom lens.Optically it is truly outstanding, mechanically superior to any peer.i am a recent convert to Canon from Nikon. The AFS 28-70 2.8 Nikkor is a great lens and more expensive than the Canon, but the Canon is smaller, quieter, faster focus, and a better range. The close focusing is outstanding. The well dampened focus and zoom rings add to the perception of extrordinary quality.Obviously the bottom line is image quality. The digital images of flowers i,ve produced and printed are incredable in sharpness and contrast. If you are trying to decide whether this is the right lens for you digitally i will say that for optics, range and quality it is the best on the market.

Strength:

Good range. Razor sharp. Good in the rain-built solid.

Weakness:

Heavy but not noticeable on a 1v. Pricy, but worth it.

This zoom is heavy and large, but balances well on the 1v. It focuses fast and quietly. It's perfect for weddings where one is stuck in one spot on a tripod with varing sized group to photograph. It is very sharp and a good zoom range for framing outdoor shots. It has a smooth zoom that holds its place hanging from your neck, especially at 70 mm. The 77mm filters for it are more expensive, however, most of the Ls use 77mm. When taking shots indoors, the zoom range makes it possible to get a pretty good portrait and open up and get a good shot of the whole room. If I had only one lens, this would be it. Yes, I like the greater range of 28-135 IS, but when you want it really sharp, this one can't be beat. Also, I have used it in the rain and it wasn't hurt. My 28-135 is "full" of dirt after one trip.

Strength:

Sharper wide open than it's predecessor Superbly well built with very tight tolerances. Highly flare resistant Immediate and quiet focus.

Weakness:

I have tested a number of lenses for a vendor over the last year, and this one is certainly at the top of it's game. Hard to believe that it actually outdoes the 28-70 2.8L, but it DOES.
