This is a Sharp, lens with a very low price, ok it is an old design, with a very noisy, rotating front element (that makes it a pain to use a polarizer), that has trouble focusing on low light levels, but did I say it before? IT IS SHARP!.

And wins hands down over the 100-300 USM, I would only replace this lens with the 70-200 f/2.8 L (with converters), or the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 IS L, and both lenses are priced over $1,000.00 US Dollars higher than this baby.

The f/5.6 Maximum aperture, makes you use a tripod or resort to 400 film for handholding on low light, but high speed films are getting better every time, so that works fine for me.

One more thing, I have dropped this lens 2 times, the first one a little girl tipped over the tripod and the lens took the hit over a carpeted floor.

The second one was during a recent trip, I dropped it from about 5 feet and it landed on a stone floor with the lens mount, as I could not find a Canon dealer and had to use the lens, I used a screw driver to "fix" the bend on the lens mount, and after I was done, the lens worked flawlessly, I shot a roll of film and developed it locally to make shure the lens worked fine, and just kept shooting, I brought back the images I wanted, and will send it to Canon for a check up... soon.

Strength:

Light weight, very good optics at a remarkable price, lens hood included!

Weakness:

Slow focus, clumsy zoom design, focal stop at 5.6 only, required fast films to maintain handheld

I've heard this lens is going to be replaced. It would be a pity because I don't think its successor can be anything cheaper and more value for money.

Just a bit slow, gets confused what to focus on in difficult light / composition situations (I am not sure if that is typical for other lens of this zoom); CANNOT USE ZOOM EXTENDER

Noice (if you use Nikon or Minolta, you won't know the different), rotating front.

A ""L"" lens for less than $500, what a bargain. Lens is shape all the way to 300mm. Solid built.

Strength:

Sharp, cheap.

Weakness:

AF sucks, noisy, f5.6

Adorama is dumping this lens. 'L' lens for under $500, very good value. For sample images see my postings at www.photocritique.net. If you have money go for 100-400L IS(for a casual photographer spending over $1k for camera equip is insane in my opinion). 300mm still way too short for small birds.

The best for 5.6+ 2.8 200 zoom is a ton of glass to carry, well worth having for good image in the price range as well as being able to carry it without it being too much of a burden.
