Strength:

Light Well built Cheap Close focus

Weakness:

Low optical quality No AF/MF switch like Sigma or Nikon Bang on focusing ends

Altough is very well built, handles well and looks great, the optical quality is not so great. Compared with other Nikon lens I own (20mm, 105 micro, 80-200mm - not big $$$$ glass), is far inferior. AF is useless in a F90 (N90 in US). Is cheap, ok, and takes decent pictures, but not has the "WOW" edge :-). I''m looking forward to have money to buy an used MF Nikkor lens.

Strength:

Well built, internal focus, and lightweight for this length. Also, has built in hood. Decent autofocus speed.

Weakness:

Tokina no longer makes this for Nikon

Good telephoto lens especially for those of us who can't afford Nikon's expensive faster version. Lightweight lens and filter size matches Tokina's 80-400

Strength:

Pretty good lens for the money specially for an internal focusing and APO lens. Fast and quiet focusing on Minolta AF version of the lens. Good average sharpness if used on tripod. Comes with tripod collar. 5 year warranty

Weakness:

Close focusing distance is to far to be considered a Macro lens. It's a shame, but thats one of those things with fixed length lenses.

Good lens for any interested in Wildlife Photography and can't afford a high priced lens. Most shots are taken with apertures ranging from f 5.6 to f11. So there's no need for a faster aperture. Always use a tripod to get the best out of this lens.

Strength:

Sharp lens with fast internal focusing. Excellent build quality and built-in lens hood.

Weakness:

This lens is excellent value considering the price. I had very good results with this lens in combination with the Tokina 1.4X PRO300 teleconverter. I do not understand why this lens has been discontinued.

Strength:

Lightweight, compact, and optically competent. Not great, but perfectly adequate assuming solid technique.

Excellent handling both with AF and manual focus. Balances very well in the hand for flying birds or airplanes. The tripod collar is solid and useful.

Reasonably fast AF on an N90s.

Excellent minimum focus distance.

More-robust construction than some third-party alternatives.

Excellent price:performance ratio.

Weakness:

None, really. It might not be the best 400 out there, but it's better than many at an unbeatable price.

Sold it because the Nikkor 300/4 + TC-14b combo is superb; the 300/4+Tamron 1.4x AF-D TC is less wonderful but offers marginally useful AF. Still, the Tokina 400/5.6 AT-X was so light and so well-balanced hand-held that I sometimes wish I had it back.

This is (was) an outstanding lens for the money. Image quality is very good at f5.6 and excellent at f8. It's a real shame that Tokina quit making this lens.

Strength:

Snappy Autofocus
Sharp
Bright viewfinder image

Weakness:

Tripod collar is inconveniently placed for larger mounting plates and heads.

This really is a top notch lens for the money. It has a great feel, Quality optics and pretty quick and quiet autofocus compared to other third party lenses. It is shame it is no longer made I think many could benefit from it.

Strength:

This lens has mostly replaced my Cannon 100-300 USM It gives me more magnification and is sharper then the cannon at 300mm.

Weakness:

A little slow in focusing and noisier then I'm used to.

For around 400 USD this is a very nice lens. It gives me good range for nature shooting and at a resonable cost.

Strength:

Very good performance in a low cost super telephoto lens. While not an "excellent" lens optically, it is very good, and what is rather nice is that performance does not degrade when shot wide open.

Weakness:

Tends to hunt a little when autofocusing in Nikon N90s.

This is a great lens for zoo shooting, air shows, races of various sorts, birds, and antime real tight cropping is desireable.
