The Filter thread is Plastic so watch out when u change the filters Very Sharp lens. Mine says Made in Japan and has no problem with oil leakage like other people says. Strength:
Perfect for one-camera, one-lens system. Extremely light and fast handling, balances well on even the smallest and lightest bodies. Outstanding sharpness and contrast even wide open, and this allows me to use Provia/Velvia 100F and Reala as my only films with minimal flash and occasional pushing as needed. Completely reliable... So far I haven't had a single problem, with daily use in photojournalism and weddings. I'm talking hundreds of exposures per week on each lens.
Weakness:
I did run into a store demo a couple of years ago with the aperture blades stuck open. People, this is complex and sensitive equipment, and as with all man-made objects, things can and will go wrong. Buy it with the proper warranty (five years from Nikon USA), and if you're a pro (like me), get an extra one or two. Small, light, fast, sharp from f/2 to 22. Doesn't get any better than this. I love this lens so much I have two and will buy a third within the next couple of weeks. Customer Service Never needed... yet. Very sharp and contrasty Light and compact Sharp into the corners even at close focus f/2 speed Enough focus ring travel for manual focus
Weakness:
None I can think of. Well, you can't hammer with it. I have to admit I'm a 35 mm fancier--I really like this focal length. So, after using the manual focus version for many years, I needed the AF version when I got my N80 as the body won't meter with AI lenses. (thanks a lot Nikon) I bought mine used at a swap meet. The blades are clean and action is crisp and snappy. It is better in the corners than the MF version when close focused, and seems better overall as well. It is a very sharp lens! I use mine for available light, and as the supplement to a 70-300 when traveling light and I leave the 28-105 home. I did adapt the lens to use the same 62 mm filters as the 70-300 and 28-105 and I keep an L37c filter on it at all times (unless I'm using a different filter). Shots are sharp and contrasty at any setting, and color is excellent. AF is very fast on the N80. With the metering on the N80, this lens takes consistently great shots. With the MB-16 grip extender on the N80 the feel with this lens is to die for. Very, very sharp! 52mm filter size.
Weakness:
None that I can think of (As long as I never have the leaking oil problem. So far I haven't). An all around great lens! Sharp, great colors, and an f-stop of f2. Customer Service Never used for this product, but the couple of times I have used Nikon Repair I have been very pleased with there speed and service. I made a detailed comparison between this lens and the 35/1.4 AIS and this is a better lens overall. The best 35mm-focal-length lens Nikon's ever made for SLRs.
Weakness:
SLight tendency, typical of Nikkors, towards harsh highlight gradation--most evident in rendition of caucasian skin in black-and-white, which sometimes looks a little pasty. Assuming yours doesn't suffers from the infamous oil-on-the-aperture-blades problem, a really nice little lens. Sharp enough for anybody, very consistent, good blur, very low flare, small size, light weight, and low price. What more could anybody ask from a lens? According to Ken Rockwell in his online review at http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/35af.htm, Nikon has fixed the "oil on the aperture blades" problem as of the Summer of 2001, and now has a permanent fix for afflicted lenses. My friend Gordon Lewis, who writes for _Petersen's Photographic_ and other photo magazines, has been using a newish sample of this lens and has experienced no problems. In any event, Nikon now offers a 5-year warrantee with USA lenses, so just be sure to buy this lens from an authorized dealer and you're covered. Similar Products Used: Just about everything in the focal length--I would estimate I've either tried or tested perhaps 60% of all the 35mm-focal-length lenses ever made, and maybe 80% or more of currently available lenses. |

Strength:
Optically, I''ve found this lens capable of producing very good results at all apertures. It has very nice close-focusing ability. At largest aperture and near focus, backgrounds blur very nicely; stopped down, depth of field is very generous. Sharpness is very good to excellent from center to corners. Subtly lit and contrasty subjects are recorded with neutral color rendition and excellent resolution (dependant on the situation, of course). The lens focuses adequately quickly under all light conditions. Manual focusing provides good feel; autofocus must be switched-off on the camera body before manually focusing. This lens focuses internally which is convenient when using polarizing or grad filters.
Weakness:
The body is plastic; take care accordingly. As has been experienced by too many people, I too have endured oil on the aperture blades which caused sticking when stopping down. I had mine serviced by Nikon Canada while under warranty. Whether it''s fixed permanently or not only time will tell. Very nice wide-normal focal length/ large aperture AF-D lens suitable for a broad range of uses. Because it''s an excellent optic at a reasonable price, I''ve given it a high ''value'' rating. Due to mechanical concerns, however, the overall rating is down a notch. Customer Service To Nikon Canada''s credit, they were very responsive in repairing the unit. From this perspective, I have to rate them highly. Similar Products Used: Other Nikon and medium format primes. |

-Very sharp and contrasty -Light weight
Weakness:
-Aperature ring tends to be a little sticky when using in manual mode I have the non "D" version which I have owned for about 6 years. The lens is extremely sharp and contrasty and gives excellent results. My sample has not exhibited the oil leak that others discribe (although I still got my fingers crossed). I owned a manual 35 f2 AIS many years ago and the AF version is better optically than that one. I use this lens on a FM2n. Even thought I prefer the "feel" of a manual lens, given a choice between better optics and feel, I went with optics. Customer Service None Similar Products Used: Nikon 35mm F2 AIS (manual) |

Strength:
Not large, sharp, little if any visible distortion, pleasing "bokeh," comfortable manual focus movement.
Weakness:
Manually focussing from 2 meters on out can be a bit trickly in lower light levels, but depth of field should cancel out any errors. This is for the non-D, older version Nikon AF 35mm f/2. Never had oily aperture blade problems as others have mentioned with the D model. Very good all-purpose lens for scenics, individual or group portraits, even close-ups (to 1:4.5 or so). Very sharp, cheap size filter(52mm)and good solid feel.
Weakness:
Where the bad thing ? ...:-) Let say that it''''s true, like the others, than I had some oil on the aperture blades, but I sold it before it''''s become a problem. It''''s why I don''''t give a ''''5'''' to this lens. You gonna hate it or love it. Because it''''s the best all around lens it''''s become no good for specific thing like the very large (24 mm) or the very near (105+). But having the choice of only one lens, that''''s will be ny choice. Because I can do anything from close-up portrait to landscape. Customer Service None, always sold before having problem.
