Strength:

1:1 life size macro. not too close to subject distance, sharp, nice focal length for portrait.

Weakness:

slow focusing. i use MF instead.

This is a nice macro lens for Nikonians. It's versatile to help you not carry 85/1.8 and 60/2.8D micro at the same time. I'm really surprised to see the result of portrait with this lens.

Strength:

Solid build quality, firm focussing ring, AF/MF switch on the lens (which is easier to operate than the switch on my camera, an F100). Optical quality is superb.

Weakness:

It may be me, but it's "bokeh" can be somewhat less than pleasing. Other than that, this lens is razor sharp and produces great results.
The lens offers high precision (manual) focussing at short distances, but manual focussing becomes increasingly difficult once you step out of the macro range.

A very nice lens: very solid, optically very, very sharp. This lens is really great and can serve triple duty as macro lens, portrait lens and landscape lens.

Strength:

Unbelievably sharp, excellent handling and build quality, useful focal length

Weakness:

Too sharp? Honestly, I have a few photos that show imperfections in flower petals, etc. Taken with another lens, I wouldn't have noticed these.

An amazing lens. Probably my favorite, as I enjoy doing macro work and no other lens is quite as nice as this one.

I chose this over the 50/60mm focal length because the added working distance is a great bonus. And, for better or worse, the depth of field is slightly shallower at any given f-stop than a shorter focal length lens.

The auto/manual focus switch is useful.

This lens--like many Nikkors--is built like a tank. The Sigma lenses I used felt poorly constructed and didn't inspire confidence. Which leads to the point: this lens is terribly expensive. It is well worth the money, but it is nearly 2x as much as competitor lenses.

Strength:

Images are so crisp and sharp with through this lens. I love the working distance and actually use this lens for over 80% of my phototgraphy. It is great for portraiture with the aperature wide open, or nearly so. I also get a lot of use out of it doing close-ups in nature, but here use it stopped down to at least f8, more typically f11 or f16.

Weakness:

I had some problems with the focusing ring but nikon stepped up and took care of me, and i haven't had any problems since.

This lens is tough to beat for portraiture or close-ups.

Customer Service

Fabulous. The Nikon sales rep took care of me when i had a problem with the lens. Their customer service was better than i could have expected.

Strength:

the images are almost beyond sharp, at edges; everywhere. versatile focal length, great for portraits.

Weakness:

the focusing mechanism (in manual mode) is a bit too loose. especially when in macro photography, i would like it to be a little tougher to turn for fine tuning. just a bit though.

an outstanding lens, for macro, regular shooting. they should combine this lens with the defocus control for ultra-versatility

Strength:

Sharp, sharp, sharp.
Macro capability.
Smooth, solid focusing.
Focal length meets many of my needs.

Weakness:

Wish the focusing were "slower" (in manual mode). Can be hard to fine-focus but maybe that's true of macro shooting generally.

If I could carry only one lens, this would usually be my choice.

PLEASE ALLOW MORE THAN ONE CHOICE IN "TYPE OF PHOTOGRAPHY." Many people I know, including myself, photograph more than one type of subject. Also, some popular choices are not listed, such as wildlife, still life, and architecture.
