Strength:

Superb sharpness and contrast, Outstanding with teleconverters.

Weakness:

None

A dream of a super telephoto: Not too big, not too heavy. Optically it is second to none. It works wonderfully well with teleconverters (TC-14b, TC-14c, and TC-301). It is also usuable as a semi-AF lens in combo with the TC-16a teleconverter (only with N90, N90s, F4s, and F5)

Strength:

Weight, optical quality

Weakness:

none

I was very surprised when I picked up this lens, it was so small! I cannot believe that anyone would prefer much heavier 400mm 2.8 lens. This is great lens for nature photography. It is of course meant to be used on monopod. In my experience, tripod is not a great choice for photographing birds if you have to find them, focus and then take picture. I can carry this lens through the woods for 2-3 hours. I would like to see someone do it with the larger one.
This lens handles very well thanks to a relatively small diameter of focusing ring and it also balances very well. This is a winner.
