NON AF LENS ITS MY FAVORITE LENS AND I HAVE BEEN USING IT FOR MY PORTRAIT WORK, TABLE TOP AND OUTDOOR MACRO WORK. THE RESOLUTION OF THE LENS IS REMARKABLE AND I WAS ABLE TO MAKE PRINTS MEASURING 40 X 60 WITH CLEAR DETAILS. I AM USING THIS LENS FROM LAST 15 YEARS AND EVEN TO THIS DAY I AM ENJOYING USING IT ON MY D700 AND D 70 BODIES. ONLY DRAWBACK IS IT IS NOT A AF LENS. WELL IT IS NOT A MAJOR ISSUE FOR A OLD MAN LIKE ME AGED ABOUT 68 YEARS. I HAVE LOT OF PATIENCE IN FOCUSING AND TAKING EXTERNAL METER READING. Similar Products Used: NIKON 55 MACRO |

Weakness:
Lens hood on mine is getting loose I think this is Nikon's best all around macro lens, except for possibly the 200mm f/4 AF micro, which is the only model I haven't used (but gets great reviews!). This model has great working distance, as it is not an IF lens as most of Nikon's other long Micros are. It is also one of the simplest designs, 5 elements in 3 groups. I think this helps with performance, particulary with contrast. The lens is very, very sharp, and focuses easily despite the relatively small maximum aperture. Performance is great both near and far. The AiS model has a deeper hood, wider focuing ring and slimmer design than the older Ai and non-Ai versions, although all are optically identical. I am going to get mine modified with a matrix chip so I can use it with my F5's metering/flash capabilities to its full extent. It will then stay with me untill it ceases to function... Customer Service None needed for my lenses so far... Similar Products Used: ALL Nikon 105 micros (except UV :-)) Nikon 200 f/4 AiS micro Nikon 55 f/2.8, f/3.5 micros |
