Recomend this lens for: Landscapes, macro works with close-up lens, documentary shooting and of course for low light situations. For people shots, it is too sharp, unless aperture is opened to eg. f/2.0. With open aperture it comes wonderfully soft. Bokeh is most terrible at my lens which is about 10 years old. Note that newer lenses may be different, and the harsh bokeh of this older lens does not indicate that newer lenses should be as bad as this lens is. If shoting people or setups, I recomend that use soft lightning eg combinging available light and fill flash. In hard lightning, the harsh bokeh will show up, and photos look two dimensional lacking any 3D feeling.

Strength:

Extremely sharp lens which has produced the best set of 6x4 prints I've ever taken. Quite fast AF (on my 600si). A lot sharper than my Sigma 28-105.

Weakness:

Effectiveness of built-in lens hood is doubtful.

Buy this lens if you want ultra-sharp prints without spending a fortune. A must for Minolta AF camera owners.

Strength:

Fast auto focusing. This lens is amazingly sharp; as sharp as the sharpest of lenses when stopped down to f/8. Good contrast & color rendition. Focuses quite close too.

Weakness:

Quality not very good at f/1.7 .Flare control could be better.

For the price of this lens it is an amazing value. When I first got it and looked at the pictures at f/1.7 I was a little disappointed, but on stopped down chromes the sharpness was impressive for any lens, period, let alone one that retails at this price. The color rendition and contrast are very good too. An absolute must have for your outfit.

Strength:

Light, very fast, very inexpensive. Focuses very quickly in AF mode. Pictures have come out very sharp. Minolta 5 year warranty.

Weakness:

Rubberized focus ring a little too narrow. Not really crazy about the built-in "lens hood", but you can always buy an external one.

Every photographer should have at least one fast, prime lens in thier bag. At $125 Canadian dollars (new), I couldn't afford NOT to have it.

Strength:

Very inexpensive, high quality output

Weakness:

low quality at f/1.7 - unsurprisingly

Having paid £39 for this lens, which gives output as good as any lens on the market when stopped down to f/8, I was obviously pleased with it. Build quality is very impressive especially for the price, whilst still being light. The AF is quick, thanks to the wide aperture. Having used the Canon equivalent, and the EOS 300 it was attached to, I can honestly say I dont know why people insist on choosing Canon. Get this lens - the quality is far superior to that youll find with any zoom on the market in this price bracket.

Strength:

Inexpensive. Light. Very sharp. Good color rendition.

Weakness:

flare/echo very obvious.

This lens came with one of the Maxxum bodies I bought. The 50mm lens is a great length for most uses. However, do NOT use it when the sun or a bright light will be in the frame. There is strong echo and flare in the shot.

For sunsets, I've had to revert to my less-than-tack-sharp Quantaray 28-80.

After being used to zoom lenses it kept me a while to use the classic 50 mm, but I soon realized that this lens is good for at least 80 percent of photos. This one is cheap, and pictures come sharp.

Strength:

Great lens for low light situations to nullify camera shake. Very sharp, close focus and always applicable.

After buying this lens I have to believe that every photographer should have a 50mm(normal view) lens. With this one having a wide aperture for a cheap price and good quality, you'd be pretty ghetto not to buy it:)

Strength:

Sharp at medium apertures
Small and light
49mm filter thread makes for easily avaiable (and affordable) filters.

Weakness:

Very soft wide open

This a decent little lens which handles really well on the Minolta AF bodies. The viewfinder is much brighter than any zoom due to the f/1.7 max. aperture, therefore picture composition is easier with this lens compared to any zoom. A delight to use!

As far as performance is concerned, this lens has the best and worst in a lens; it is very soft wide open, to the point that enlargements greater than 6x4 are not really recommended; stop down to f/4-f/11 will give very sharp results - I doubt whether any zoom can match this performance. Stopping down to f/16 and f/22 give a soft result again due to diffraction.

I would definately recommend this lens over a zoom as it is far sharper, lighter and has a much larger max. aperture. And if you do have a zoom, for £30 second hand, it is worth buying for when the larger maximum aperture is needed.
