rotating front element, tiny shift & tilt knobs

despite of ordinary glas material (no L-series) this lens has exceptional sharpness - but the best thing about it is the unsharpness! things out of focus get blured in a special way, not seen by any other lens - even if you stop down to f11! the most thrilling feature - and probably main reason to have it - is the shift/tilt ability. I used this lens for portraiture only, just tilting and no shifting. the unsharpness caused by tilt looks like partial softfocus. the unsharp area can be put whereever you want in the picture - using the stop-down preview will give you an impression of what you get. superb optics - mechanicaly one of the best lens on the planet. only thing that annoyed me are the smal tilt knobs (shift knobs are even smaller), and the fact that the front of the lens is rotating makes the use of filters fuzzy. autofocus is not provided, but you have a automatic diapraghm. this lens is worth every cent of the 1.000,-

Sharpness is excellent! No noticable distortion at all. More compact body than 24mm-TS and 45mm-TS (which share the same body).

None really, but Canon made the TS-control knobs reverse of the threads on the other two TS-lenses.

Besides owning the 90mm-TS, I also own the 24mm & 45mm TS lenses. The 90mm-TS comes in a smaller body than the 24mm-TS & 45mm-TS lenses. The 90mm-TS has controls that use a reverse-thread design from the other two TS-lenses. Why, I don't know. The 90mm-TS is slighty sharper than the 45mm-TS and noticably sharper than the 24mm-TS. I use the Tilt Function much more than the Shift Function to improve my range of focus. This lens is extemely sharp and feels solid. I can't imagine anyone being unhappy with this lens. I am extremely happy with this lens!

The lens arrives with some dust particles inside. I immediately sent it back and Canon made it perfect.

Smallest and lightest of the three Canon TS-E lenses. Excellent optical performance right across the whole image circle. Smooth focussing action. Bright viewfinder image. Versatile lens useful for portraiture as well as landscape and architecture.

None detected, but like the other TSE lenses this one is bigger, heavier and more expensive that a normal lens of equivalent focal length. The tilt movement on this lens operates in reverse compared with that on the 24 and 45. You get accustomed to this. Canon does not say why they are different. The control knobs are a bit small but they work just fine.

This has the longest focal length of Canon's three tilt shift lenses and in some ways is the best. Without tilt or shift it is a very sharp, contrasty general purpose lens. With tilt and shift it is perfect for landscape and exterior architecture. Compared with the 24 and 45 mm TS-E lenses, the 90 has a fraction less resolution in the centre of the image circle, but is better at the edges. Full shift can be used at f5.6 with excellent definition in the corners. Resistance to flare is excellent. I am unable to detect any distortion at all even on very careful testing. Have your Canon service centre make the tilt and shift axes made parallel so you can use both at once. This is particularly useful for landscape at close quarters allowing down shift and down tilt to be used together.

The tilt mechanism it geard the reverse of what you'd expect, and the reverse of the TS-E 24!!

This is one of my favourite lenses I drag it out on every serious outing. It's not L series, but I really think that it's as good as the 24 that is an L. The shifting effect (as you'd expect) isn't so noticable but the tilt is just so useful. If you like closeup or landscape this lens will let you get superb clarity of plains that are not paralell to the camera back without needing f22. I think that it's the sharpest lens that I've ever used on a 35mm system.
