Strength:
Fast Glass, Inexpensive, great Depth of field, quick AF
Weakness:
It feels a bit cheaply built, it's plastic housing doesn't scream quality. Also the lens hood, (ES-62), isn't included, so that's an additional $8-$15. This is my go-to portrait lens for indoors and outdoors. It's never let me down, it's fast enough to get REALLY creamy Bokeh and quick auto focus. If you're looking for a great prime lens to get started with something better than your kit lens, this is your lens! Customer Service Never needed to contact Canon and I've used this lens for easily 6000 shutter attenuations |

Strength:
It's so cheap, if it ever malfunctions, just buy another one.
Weakness:
Will back focus or front focus even to the best of cameras. It's not the camera's AF folks, it's the elcheapo motor driving the cogs... it's sometimes misses...
An outstanding optical design and classical lens formula using cheap mass produced lens technology wrapped in black plastic.

Strength:
Price. This has to be the biggest strength. You would be hard pressed to find a lens as good as this for the same price. It's quite outstanding really.
Weakness:
Build Quality. Feels like a toy. The texture feels wrong in my hands. It's not going to survive a lot of 'testing', if you're inclined to treat your equipment that way.
Just a quick note, the price paid is in GBP, not dollars.

Strength:
Image quality is good for a lens of this price
Weakness:
Focus ring
For the price, this is an EXCELLENT lens. The background distortion at full aperture is very pleasing to the eye. As a portrait lens, it's probably a little too short for my liking (85mm is my preferred length) but I have been really impressed with it so far.

Strength:
Cheap, cheap, cheap!
Weakness:
Cheap (but what do you expect for $80?)
The lens does a good job for such a low price. My only complaint is that it doesn't seem to seal very well and is full of dust (less than a year after purchase). It does seem like a plastic toy but it gets the job done. |

Weakness:
For the price, NONE. Great lens for the price. I have been reading reviews on this lens for some time now. I almost did not order it because I didn't think it was possible that it could be sharp at $74. I was wrong! My first SLR some 30+ years ago had a 50mm canon attached. That lens was a great lens, but this one is even better. I can see using this lens alot. If it stops working tomarrow, I will order another one just like it.

Strength:
Very small, does not intimidate portrait subjects like the big zooms can.
Weakness:
I get used to IS with my other lens and in low light get some camera shake.
I bought this lens because my success with Canon FD lenses on my 35 mm cameras was remarkable. The Canon FD 1.4 reference lens is still my all time favorite, but this lens comes very close! The light plastic nature is fine, less is more, except in hand holding in low light it is easy to induce camera shake. The lens is a bit flarey but when you go to F4 or F5.6 and take your time, the results cannot be improved upon. It is a terrific portrait lens for head and shoulders candids at F1.8, and the 80 mm focal length is reminiscent of the old 90 on Leicas, a really working focal length for alot of subjects. I strongly recommend getting one and using it, one of the cheapest and best lenses for an XT body you can buy. Customer Service none needed. Similar Products Used: Canon 17-55 F2.8 IS
