Strength:

The fast 50mm has fallen out of favour with many, but is still my favourite. Decent build quality. Unbeatable price/performance ratio. Light weight. Disposable. Sharp. No distortion. Minimal light fall off wide open, but suberb from F2.8. Deeply recessed front element is well protected from stray light and sticky fingers. DOF Scale. Metal mount.

Weakness:

For 70 bucks, there is nothing to complain about.

Buy this lens!!!!!

Strength:

sharp, small, light. Metal mount. decent AF. Dirt cheap secondhand

Weakness:

replaced for that toy called the Mk2. Mf is usually a little sticky. AF is a little noisy

bought it for some silly low price, second hand. Sharp, even wide open, but super at 2.2 and smaller. focus''s ok, Af isnt to slow in AI servo. MF is a little sticky as the rubber ring rubs againts the plastic. If you want a 50mm lens for your EOS, buy this. the 1.4 usm version is a little expensive

Strength:

-Very sharp. I mean try not to shoot your girl friends close potrait unless she has a silky smooth skin. Believe me, not a good experience :)) -Great value for the money. -It''s light and very portable. -I''m using it for 1 months and shoot 2-3 rolls of film and I didn''t experiance any flare and distortion yet...

Weakness:

-Focus is really slow and loud, esspecially in low light situations but no hunting....even in low light.. -Focus ring does not have smooth operation and it is very loose...

This is a great lens. After reading the reviews here and and people suggesting it to me while it was still available I decided to buy it. It gets a little soft wide open but 2.8 and up it is tack sharp!! My friend has a 28-90 lens and I did a side by side comparison with same settings and there is a great difference. Prints were 4x6 and you were still able to see the difference. Just to give you an idea,I was able to count my girl friends eyebrows where it was impossible with the 28-90mm. For the price you can''t go wrong witn this lens. I think this lens is a great value over the two 50mm prime lenses that canon makes today ( it is almost 3 times cheaper than the 1.4 version and the quality is much better than the mark II version. )

OK, this lens, which was discontinued 8 years ago, totally rules! it is far superior to the new plastic version, which one of my freinds just got.

Strength:

Superior Optical Results Compact and Lightweight Excellent Value Durable (Had Mine Since ''87)

Weakness:

The focus ring is loose compared to older MF lenses. Really no big deal.

Amazing lens! This lens produces ultra-sharp images. It is usable at f/1.8 and tack sharp by f/2.8. A great lens for street photography, which is my speciality. This lens and the equally impressive EF 28/2.8 are the only lenses I really use; I have zooms which I''ve loaned out to a colleague (I don''t miss them). This lens is small and light. Much less intimidating than a comparitively bigger zoom. The DOF cale is useful (the 50/1.8 II has no DOF scale; the 50/1.4 DOF scale is useless as it is only marked for f/22). The metal lens mount is nicer than the plastic mount on the new 50/1.8. The manual focus ring is useful, although it feels loose compared to the manual focus lenses with which I learned photography.

Strength:

Small, light, 1.8, great price second hand and has an "affordable" filter size(52mm)

Weakness:

Not USM therefore can be noisy

Wanted something small, light and cheap after considerable investment in Canon D30 and 28-135IS. went in to examine EF50 mkII when spotted mkI second hand at half the price - £45. I have found it a great lens sharp with good contrast. Low light performance superb.

Model Reviewed: EF50mm f/1.8 I

Strength:

Small, light, sharp (good optics), fast (f1.8), can be found for cheap on the used market, good build quality.

Weakness:

No USM which makes for some noisy focusing, no longer made!

For the price that this lens can be found for, its unbeatable. It has very good optics that produce really sharp, contrasty pictures. It has a metal lens mount ring and a DOF scale unlike the 50/1.8 mkII that they make now. It has a non-rotating front element and a bayonet type lens hood mount. It also has a more usable manual focus ring (when compared with the mkII).
Unfortunately, this lens doens't have USM. The focusing is noisier and slower, but its not too bad. As I said, for the price, this lens can't be beat. I got mine on Ebay for under $90 USD. Great buy if you can find it.

At $80.00 USD this is a great value! Great for available light photography.

Weakness:

Not as fast as an USM lens, but faster than trying to focus with the FD/FL equipment.

Buy it if you can find it!
