Model Reviewed: EF 300mm f/2.8L USM

Strength:

Fantastic Corner to corner sharpness with little vignetting even at f2.8 USM AF is plenty quick, especially for nature.

Weakness:

At 2855grams, its abit heavy for handholding for extended periods of time.

With the newer IS version out, if you can find one used, get it.

Model Reviewed: EF 300mm f/2.8L USM

Strength:

Excellent image quality (color saturation, sharpness, contrast). Manual focus speed selection helpful when using EF teleconverters. Focus is fast, accurate, and silent. The lens hood does wonders for flare reduction. Mechanical build quality is fantastic!!

Weakness:

It's heavy and requires a tripod/monopod for most work. Drop-in polarizer as well as the lens is expensive. Filter holder uses Wratten type gels which are hard to change and too delicate for field work.

This focal length is versatile. Image quality is outstanding even at f/2.8. Focusing is fast and accurate. Even the EF 1.4x teleconverter is hardly noticeable with this lens. It is a little heavy for handheld work but not impossible. Use of a flash with the lens hood requires a snoot and/or flash bracket for distant flash shots. Portraiture and sports are great subjects for this lens. It's expensive but it delivers superb images.
