Strength:
extremely sharp!sharp!sharp! reproduces colors well, compatible with ef 1.4x & 2x extender. nice tripod collar, well built
Weakness:
none that i could find, some would say the slow autofocus, but as i said above ,who needs fast autofocus on a macro. before i purchased this lens,i checked out the mtf graph on it ,it looked great,i then read all the reviews on this site about it,they were all positive reviews. so i bought it. this beautiful piece of glass way exceeded my expectations, this lens is razor sharp!!!its stunning. its got to be one of the sharpest L lenses in the lineup.its just as sharp at infinity as it is at closest focusing ditance, exremely sharp even wide open ,even with the 2x extender attached its extremely sharp. below youll hear about its slow autofocus, yes its true, autofocus is slow on this lens ,thats cool though ,no need for fast autofocus on a macro anyway ,it reproduces colors very accuratly ,its got a nice tripod collar, a nice lens hood as well, i purchased this lens for macro work ,but as it turns out 80% of the images i make with this lens are landscape/cityscape images. i have the 28-70L and the 70-200 L both awsome lenses ,but when i want exremely sharp images and breathtaking detail its the 180 macro that i put on my 1V, speaking of 1v this lens balances nicely on it if the PBE2 is attached, but this lens is best at home mounted to a tripod, being that focus is so shallow/critical. if its extreme sharpness and detail you want ,and exellent color reproduction as well this lens is for you, dont mind the $1400.00 youll shell out ,youll forget all about that as soon as you get your first import or roll back. Strength:
Life size image is definately a plus. USM is very quiet when in AF. Very sharp images. When coupled with the 1v, the 45 point AF is a deadly combo. Very durable.
Weakness:
Heavy. The first time I used this lens, I fell in love. I''m not sure why the other reviews say the focusing is slow. Mine is very fast and quiet. I don''t use the AF when doing macro work though. Customer Service Never had to use it. Similar Products Used: 100mm macro sigma 105mm 300mm USM 28-135 IS |

focal length
Weakness:
None Well, this lens is regarded as a brilliant lens for those interested in Macro photography. The best thing about this lens is the long focal length which gives you that extra working distance with your subjects. I love the macro world, I started with extension tubes, then the Canon EF 100mm 2.8 Macro lens and build up to the 180mm. Similar Products Used: Canon EF 100mm f2.8 Macro |
