Strength:

It has the ability to accept filter factors (and bellows extension factors) in 1/10 f-stops; we use this all the time in our work (rather that having to "adjust E.I.")I have tested the Sekonic L-508 and L-608 which have similar functions; the Starlite is more accurate. This is important to me because we use transparency ("slide") film which has a narrow latitude; we shoot for +/- 1/10 of an f-stop. We have tested the Gossen to be exact in its measurements, whereas the Sekonic meters that we tested needed to be compensated by as much as .7 stops! The meters were tested and calibrated by a veteran technician.
The Gossen's display and ergonomics are very utilitarian and work great in sunlight and dark rooms. It is also more sensitive and accurate than my rather inexpensive Minolta flashmeter and Sekonic ambient meter. The Gossen Starlite is our first choice for a digital spot/ambient meter for ambient/flash lighting based on accuracy, which is most important in our work.

Weakness:

Does not have the built-in radio slave module like the L-608, but we can live without it as we primarily use sync cords and synch using the built-in slaves in our strobes anyways.

I am a corporate & architectural photographer with a master's degree in photography from RIT. The Gossen Starlite is a digital combination spotmeter/incident meter for ambient and flash photography.
It has a viewfinder that you cna use to make reflected light reading of a selectable 1 degree or 5 degree area (such as a face or highlight), and a retractactable dome that can be used for incident readings of flash or ambient light.

Customer Service

Excellent. Over the years, we observe that Bogen has proven to be responsive for service. I recently needed a tripod part, they called me within 24 hrs. after I emailed them via the Bogenphoto.com site. I wish more manufacturers were so attentive!

Pentax Spotmeter V -- if you can live with analog and no flash, i.e., for landscapes this is #1; the analog dial allows you to visualize exposure relationships.
