Gossen Scout 3 Light Meters

Gossen Scout 3 Light Meters

DESCRIPTION

Remarkably useful, at a low price: The least expensive of the Gossen meters. It uses a selenium cell and is not dependent on batteries. A simple match needle system makes it extremely easy to use. The SCOUT 3 is a reflective light meter and weighs in at just 1 3/4oz.

Strength:

Low cost and lightweight.

Weakness:

Not very good in low light - indoors or street.

Good for use in brighter areas for medium format TLR with no meter and as a backup to your in camera. Nice and lightweight for travel.

Model Reviewed: Scout 3

Strength:

Low price, light weight, no battery needed. Very basic meter if all you need is a very basic meter.

Weakness:

Feels a bit cheap. Not real sensitive in low light.

If you need a basic meter for a camera that does not have one, such as one of the older med format models then this would be fine. It in no way would be a replacement for the one in your 35 mm.

Strength:

No battery, light weight, easy to use. Basic

Weakness:

None.

If you want low light get a CDS meter. Anyone who has studied photography knows that. Also this type of meter is very simple in its electronics therefore simple package. Checked against an in camera meter it is flawless. Sunrise over the Rockies images perfect. I keep it in my basic camera bag. Best for someone who wants more control over photography than the built in meter. Save the batteries in the camera. To learn about photography.

Have used many in camera meters over the years, 1st in a new Canon TL 1971. Also the Vivitar meter, which I gave to a friend, this is a smaller meter.

Strength:

Light weight, no need for battery

Weakness:

Inaccurate reading, no incident metering capability

I bought and returned it within 3 days. The reading was always 2.5 stops higher than the proper reading, based on incident light. Actual images on film confirmed incorrect reading. With the lack of incident light, there are serious flaws in this light meter and definitely not worth the money.
