Strength:

Dirtcheap! Lots of power For that price a terrific build quality (besides the battery door)

Weakness:

Goes through batteries rather fast. Battery door flimsy (but it survived 5 years of harsh conditions and duct tape is the photographer's best friend) Would have wanted more manual settings.

With its low price and light weight, this is a great bang around everywhere flash. A lot of power, and very good eposure. Used with a mini softbox, you loose about 2 stops, but it gives you a very soft light without bouncing. The 1/16 setting is great for triggering monolites without disturbing your light setup too much. Autozoom works great, second curtain flash is nice. I use it on 3 Nikon bodies (F90, FM2, CP 5700) without any problems. If you are afraid about your camera, get a Wein Save Sync. This flash is relabeled (and cheaper) version of the Metz MZ40.

Customer Service

That thing is seven years old and has seen a big part of the world. I doubt it'll ever see a repair shop if it breaks.

Strength:

- Good power - LCD backlighted panel - 2nd curtain synch directly from flash - Distance meter on LCD - Fairly good on manual setting - Can be used with external "belt-power" - Bounce head - Very Cheap - Sunpak quality

Weakness:

Is not E-TTL compatible and can't be used up to 1/125 sec (FP mode) on my Elan7 (Eos33)

A good and cheap flash unit without to much ambitions. Works well on EOS bodies and offers something that Speedlight haven't. If you're on a budget, then this is the flash for you.

Model Reviewed: 4000AF Flash

Strength:

easy to use, good range, power zoom, backlit LCD, manual override, right price

Weakness:

it doesn't have the bells and whistles of the main producers - swivel head, integrated screens, etc

of course its not the top of the line, but for once the price is right. For the occassional user of flash it is a great deal compared to the expensive main producers.

Customer Service

I got a free replacement, very good

Model Reviewed: 4000AF Flash

Strength:

Nice GN at 132ft. LCD screen with manual and TTL functions. Power Zoom head 28mm-80mm. Second curtain sync. Bounce Head. Compact.

Weakness:

Doesn't have some nice features like strobo and swival head that some comparable speedlites have.

For the money, can not be beat. Acceptable quality.

Strength:

Good price. Fairly sturdy.

Weakness:

Battery compartment pops open if dropped. Camera sometimes didn't trigger the flash in the dark, flash was attached and ready!

Good price compared to the Canon flash counter part. Auto zoom and rear curtain sync works well. I wish there is an equivalent model to the Canon 380EX with pre-exposure flash assist.

Customer Service

Never used.

Casual

Strength:

powerful, LC display, Zoom, NiCad batteries powered, rear sync available

Weakness:

scale not displayed with some models of cameras; only TTL and Manual; no ISO manual setting override; no flash compensation;

If you prefer to use NiCad rechargeable batteries on a zoom head electronic flash, this one is the bottom one you need. However, this product is not perfect. The scale isn't shown with my Nikon N60 camera, thus, only TTL mode is reliable on that camera.

Strength:

Price, Sunpak quality, fairly light weight, auto-zoom, bounce head.

Weakness:

None that I could find

Great little unit for the casual or beginner user. Nice to take on vacations as a back up. Price is right as compared with the 'big name' dedicated flashes. Simple and easy, put the batteries in and start to shoot. Priced right.

Very good price for this flash. You won't find anything similar. Is the same flash as the Metz 40 AF-4 which was Product of the Month in the German "Color-Foto" 1/2000.
