I was happy with using my sb28 but it was not totally compatible with my D100 so I bought the sb800. I am at least as happy with it as I was with my sb28. Just a note about the first review: The flash does not decide what the shutter speed will be; the body does... Nikon bodies never choose a shutter speed below 1/60 with a flash attached unless you put the camera in front or rear slow synch. Putting the body into slow synch will allow the body to choose a speed slower than 1/60 if it is required to properly expose the scene you are shooting... Strength:
It has a light to show you where your shadows will be. The head swivels backwards.
Weakness:
A manual no one can understand, features that are confusing and very hard to use, inability to balance flash with ambient light, a standby mode that constantly causes the flash to power down slightly, causing you to miss shots, even in manual mode. This is an inexcusable flaw by Nikon. The Nikon SB-800 is overpriced and an underperforming flash. Even as a seasoned professional, I can't read the manual, it doesn't make any sense. The flash in conjunction with the camera, can't even properly balance flash with ambient light! The flash automatically makes the camera shutter speed go to 1/60; you can't drag your shutter, which means your background in dimly lit areas will always be black. I called Nikon about this bad feature, and they told me to shoot in manual! I said if I wanted to shoot in manual, I would have bought a basic flash, not a $350 professional one! What a joke! None Jumped ship from a Canon 10D to a Nikon D2H. Bought the SB-800 as part of the package and all I can say is wow. Smaller and lighter than my Canon 550EX was. Exposures right on always , can't say that about the 10D 550EX combo Customer Service NA Similar Products Used: 550 EX |
