Strength:

The SB28 is extremely versatile. I can use it for extreme 1:1 close-ups, or for distances of up to 30 feet with a telefoto lens. It is easy to use and gives very good exposure when used with my N90s.

Weakness:

I did bust off the hot shoe mount, but it was replaced for less than $50 with no problems. Good engineering saved me from having to replace the expensive flash.

For the money, portability, and versatility, it can't be beat. Add to that the great exposures, and you have the best flash going for your nikon camera.

Customer Service

Nikon provides superior customer service, although i haven't had this product serviced, i have had others serviced by them with very good results.

Weakness:

None whatsoever

This flash when used with F5, F100, F/N90 is absolutly fantastic !
It is packed to the rafters with features, And it's fill flash results are by far the best of any 35mm SLR on camera flash in the world (Other brands try, But none come close !)
When 2 or more are used with the Nikon SU-4 remote TTL trigger, A whole new world of flash photography can/is discovered !

IT IS SMALL AND LIGHT IN WEIGHT AND IT TAKES GREAT PICTURES WITH MY N70.THIS THE BEST NIKON HAS COME UP WITH.IT IS VERY POWERFUL AND THE FILL FLASH IS AWESOME.IF YOU HAVE A NIKON BUT NOT A SB28. YOU NEED YOUR HEAD EXAM.

Weakness:

ARE YOU KIDDING? NOT ON THIS BABY

IF YOU OWN A NIKON CAMERA YOU MUST HAVE A SB-28. IF YOU DON"T YOU MIGHT AS WELL THROW YOUR NIKON AWAY.

Strength:

Smaller than SB-26, yes allows more flashes.

Weakness:

None

Love the flash. Sold an SB-26 and bought the SB-28 to replace it. It's smaller and lighter than the SB-26; however, it is just as powerful (Guide No. 138 ft, 50mm focal length, 100 ISO film), has a faster recycling time, yet gives more flashes per charge than the SB-26.
Has all the features of the SB-26 except for slave/flash function, which I never used.
The controls on the back are better, no sliding switches, only rubber coated buttons that are recessed to prevent accidents.
The head zoom automatically between 24-85mm with a Nikon (or equivalent, works with Tokina for example) zoom lens that has a CPU. There is a flip down diffuser panel for 18 and 20mm lenses.
It has a vertical tilting flash head that tilts to allow bounce flashes or for closeups. The head also swivels for use when the camera is being held vertical.
The rear LCD panel displays all information that is required such as zoom setting, flash mode (TTL, Matrix TTL, etc.) flash compensation, actual aperture and an indicator bar for flash distance range. It is backlight and with a Nikon F5 and N90s it illuminates when the camera illumination button is pressed. (Probably does this with other Nikon cameras, I have not tried it.)

Has a built in red eye reduction light, AF illuminator, and offers monitor preflash.
It will operate in full manual, non-TTL automatic mode, Standard TTL autoflash, Matrix balanced TTL flash 3D Matrix TTL fill flash.
The monitor preflash offers an invisible high-speed sequence of monitor preflashes to provide addtional information about the subject reflectance, allowing for more accurate flash photography. This information is obtained by the camera's TTL sensors in the bottom of the camera. This allows the camera to signal the flash to adjust the light output.
The SB-28 (like the SB-26) offers a stroboscopic funtion that gives you a strobe. It also offers high-speed synchronization for shutter speeds up to 1/4000 second.
Allows rear shutter curtain flash and slow sync. Has a standby mode to save on batteries, flash is reactivated with the shutter release button is slightly pressed if in standby mode.
Also offers flash exposure compensation that allows you to make flash exposure adjustments. Flash will also tell you underexposure value, if photo is underexposed.
Put all these features in one flash that's 2 1/2 inches wide, 5 inces high and 3 1/2 inches deep, with a weight of under 12 ounces (without batteries, it takes four AA alkaline, lithium, Nicd or NiMH)and you come up with the best flash made for dedicated use with a Nikon N6006, N8008, N70, N90s, F4 or F5. It will work on all Nikon cameras made; however, for other Nikon cameras it would be an overkill; too many features that could not be used.
Please note: The features mentioned above do not work on all Nikon cameras. For example, red eye reduction does not work on an F5 but will work on an N90s or N70, high speed synchronization works only on a N90s or F5 and monitor preflash only works on a N70, N90s or F5.
