Kodak Ektachrome E100SW Slide Film

Kodak Ektachrome E100SW Slide Film

DESCRIPTION

The warm color balance of E100SW Film makes it great for any application where the lighting is unpredictable. So you can shoot with confidence even when you''ve got gray, overcast conditions on location or at a sporting event. And when the lighting is low or the action is fast, you can gain extra film speed by push processing - with virtually no change in color balance.

Strength:

Like Goldilock's porridge, this stuff is just right. Used outdoors in a 6x7 camera, I get beautiful chromes with the right mix of saturation and warmth.

Weakness:

None.

My favorite all-around film. Provia F is a little finer grained, but E100SW wins on its color pallette.

Strength:

A very sharp film with tight, fine grain. Beautiful, natural, warm color rendition with clean whites. Pushes to ASA 200 with beautiful results.

Weakness:

None I can think of.

A wonderful general purpose transparency film, great for natural scenics and wildlife, where you don't want the very punchy, over-saturated effect of Fuji Velvia or Kodak E100-VS

sharp, warm natural skin tones

great film for portraits, glamour photography with studio lights, natural skin tones (do not have to use warm filters), as any pro product is little expensive, saturated and sharp

Strength:

lovely skin tone, nice and warm, good colour saturation

Weakness:

It's slow but hey that's the way the cookie crumbles...

Just shot 10 rolls in a nightclub in London and really liked the result, could have done with an extra stop though - wish they made it in a 200asa. Colours were vibrant and warm - just what you need in a nightclub. Shot a roll of E100vs at the sametime just to test it out but didn't like the skin tone as much as the E100sw.

Strength:

The 'warmth' of this film is just right. If I need less saturation, I could shoot this at 80 iso without a problem.

Weakness:

Price ??

I tried the Fuji products as they seem be the most popular. Velvia was nice the first time I tried it. But over a period of time, the oversaturated and at times unrealistic color made me not want Velvia. Provia was not great not bad either...but to me lacked something. So I went back to 100SW and 100s. The second time around, I realized this is the film for me. Grain ?? This is not really a concern to me as it never bothered me nor people I do business with. Try this film and shoot it on different lights and subject...then you will realize...ummmm that was a Kodak moment.

Strength:

Film is very fine grained.

Weakness:

If shooting in that warm morning or evening light and want the really warm effect, this film tends to go too warm and flat.

I admit that I do shoot more nature and wildlife photography, and this film may not fit the niche. Professional clients in my lab love this film for skin tones. I don't shoot people. For nature I don't like it.

Strength:

Reproduces very fine detail like the hairs and pollen on a flower. Doesnt go "cold" in shadows, and can be used for people pictures. Can really increase the color and saturation by shooting at 125 and normal processing. Contrast is controlable with underexposure or pushing.

Weakness:

On the slides themselves sometimes sky can look grainy but it projects and inlarges just fine.

Makes every print film i use look terrable.

For me this is the most versitile film around. I have had audiences view my favorite three emulsions (100SW, 100vs and velvia) and they almost always choose the photos shot on 100SW. You can shoot it at 125 which makes it hand holdable in most situations and people look great. I have found the other two to go "cold" when shooting flowers or moving water in shadows where 100SW looks like what you remember. It also dosent do strange color shifts with exposures longer than 1/8 sec like velvia does.

If you want exagerated color just pop on a filter for the few shots you need it.

Strength:

A warm, saturated film that provides color enhancement without the super saturation of Provia F, 100VS, or the awful circus-color Velvia.

Weakness:

As usual, too expensive.

This film is a good balance between the super-saturated films and the more accurate films. It provides warmth and saturation without making everything look like the colors are self illuminating. For nature/outdoors, it supports the natural image rather than overwhelming it and calling attention to itself.

Now that I have outgrown the super-saturated look, this is the slide film I choose for most shots.

This is also an excellent choice for the last lingering Kodachrome holdouts.

Model Reviewed: Ektachrome E100SW

Strength:

Very good for animal photography, a warm and coulourful film and still with a good balance. The shadow parts don't get all black.

Weakness:

No

I usually use 100-speed film pushed to EI200, this is to get high quality with fine grain. I don't like to use higher speed films, it is often the only solution but the results with pushed 100-speed films are almost always more satisfying.

For landscape you can use this film if you want to keep the details in the shadow parts, otherwise it is better to load up with Velvia, Elite 50 or Kodachrome 25/64

Customer Service

You can receive technical data sheets from your store, but Fuji's data sheet are more detailed and better than Kodak.

Fuji Provia 100 (also a very good product, Sensia 100 and faster speed films.
