Handheld scanners have come a long way, as evidenced by Logitech's new ScanMan Color 2000. It's capable of scanning 16.8 million colors. But ScanMan makes quick work of the greatest handheld scanning hassle - scans of images wider than the scanner - by automatically joining the multiple-pass images without a visible seam, even if the passes overlap by an inch or more. Scanning width is just over 4 inches, with the whole unit measuring 6 inches wide at the scanning end and tapering to about 4 inches wide over its 7-inch length (a bit awkward for small hands). Even so, a wide rubber roller under the unit makes steady scanning easy.
