Strength:

USB - so may scanners still have SCSI interfaces - Nikon, Minolta, Microtek get your acts together with your top line scanners - need USB at least, Firewire better. Good resolution.

Weakness:

Very noisy - agricultural is no overstatement. Very light but plasticky.

Scanner drivers run out of Photoshop - you only get Version 5 LE with the scanner. Not a great scanner interface, but better than some of the epson flatbed windows. You have to quit the scanner interface to get full usage of Photoshop facilities. Need quicker interface, digital ICE

Customer Service

Excellent. Here is a story: Scanner died after about 25 scans - phoned up Kodak who recommended upgrading all their software - no luck. Got back to me next day - they said that there must be a hardware fault - sent out a new scanner by courier and collected the old one: New scanner came from, and old one went to Germany. Took only four days - quicker than dealing with the mail order firm I bought it from.

Strength:

Nice scans (when it's working) Entire roll scan (with lengthy and unnecessary pre-scan)
Has many nice specs. (if you believe what Kodak Marketing says)

Weakness:

Numbers scans backwards - a totally crazy concept.
Very clumsy and poorly thought out GUI.
Many Windows standards for software use are not followed making operations clumsy at best.
Must do pre-scan of each frame which makes batch scans too time consuming.
Even though Kodak says differently, it does not run at all under NT4 with SCSI drivers.
Freezes up frequently and requires a reboot of a normally very stable system.
No provision for automatic dust or scratch removal - Photoshop cleanup of scans is time consuming.

I have been trying for weeks now to get a Kodak RMA and full refund. It's been too long to return it to the original dealer so my only recourse is from Kodak. I'm totally fed up with this scanner as it now sits. New drivers are supposed to be released in June to fix many issues but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Until Kodak gets many issues resolved, this is one piece of hardware that is NOT ready for primetime play.

Customer Service

Good response initially but of very little help. When Kodak started running out of things to try, I quit hearing from them. Now those I was working with don't return phone calls.

Strength:

-looks nice
-inexpensive considering its specs
-can do a strip of film
-

Weakness:

-inaccurate color and brightness with fuji transparency films
-previews are worthless
-takes FOREVER to do a high res scan
-the overall image is "grainy"... and i'm using fuji PROVIA 100F
-the interface doesnt offer much options.
-wish it offered more film profile presets
-oh, and can it be any noiser?

So when i got the working scanner i wasnt as impressed as i expected to be considering the specs. I had imagined that this is the next great scanner from kodak to come after the 3570 to be better but i guess that wasnt the case. Well maybe if i downloaded the new firmware it might improve the performance. IF anyone can tell me if any of this is happening to you too please email me.

Customer Service

-i bought this from B&H and this is actually my second one. The first one came and didnt work out of the box at all and b&h replaced it with a new one.

Strength:

When it's working, it can be a decent film scanner with good color fedelity, but see weaknesses.

Weakness:

This scanner has problems, and I have been plagued with them.

1. The scanner developes dark streaks from top to bottom of the scans at random times and locations.
2. The scan quality of film at the edges is unacceptablty soft.
3. The software is a mess. It's not (at least in my experience) possible to properly set white and black points. Very hard to do any curve adjustments.
4. The film does not seemed to be pulled tight enough, thus creating a visable arc/curve at the left and right film edges.
5. For the money, the sounds it makes in it's focus cycles sound like a problem in the making....very cheap.

I would, at this point, stay away from this unit like the plague. Kodak does not seem to have any interest in solving my problem, nor do they seem interested in fixing the software.

If the software was fixed, or Vuescan support was implimented, and they go to V2 of the unit, perhaps it might be worth considering for $500. Right now, I feel as though I'm out $1000 for trusting the brand.
Caveat emptor.

Customer Service

They seem friendly on the phone, and they did send 3 replacement units. The first arrived DOA. The next two that arrived provided a lovely soft focus effect over 80% of the image, with the outside 20% being in focus. After sending the replacements back (my unit made dark lines on occasion, but at least the image was in focus), I sent Kodak images which were to be reviewed by technical staff, with hope of a correction. Not another word from Kodak in over 4 weeks.

Strength:

No success in finding them yet

Weakness:

Another review here mentioned the noise factor; they said 'agricultural'. They meant old diesel tractor. I could live with the noise, and the slow speed, if the quality was there. It isn't. There are more bugs in this product than I believed possible in a retail item from a reputable company (even after downloading all the available bug fixes). Essentially it boils down to whether this scanner can cut it for print, especially over A5 in size. It can't, so I can't recommend you do anything else except save your money for a better scanner. If you are a photographer and want to digitise your images, use an outside agency.
