Strength:
Build quality. Feels like a precision instrument.
Weakness:
Squinty little viewfinder.
I really enjoyed my IIIA, but I ultimately sold it. The build quality was nice, and the lenses were excellent. But I ultimately could not justify the expense for the system and the difficulty in finding lenses. Customer Service Henry Scherer's waiting list is insanely long. I waited 2 years to have my camera serviced. Similar Products Used: Mamiya 7 II.

- Advanced design,
Weakness:
- You have to own and use one to really understand what I am talking about,
The Contax is a gem. It is THE best camera, RERIOD. Contax is a work of art, a product of ingenuity, precision craftsmanship and perfection both mechanically and optically. In summary classic Contax rangefinder camera is not just a tool to take great photos, it is a masterpiece of engineering which is a delight to use, a pleasure just to hold and a pride to own.
Customer Service I service the cameras I own myself. Once you get the idea (and find the parts if you need any replacements) it is relatively easy to fix the Contax. Thus, in my case I never needed customer service. Thanks to the EXCEPTIONAL built quality at Stuttgart Zeiss Ikon factory. Similar Products Used: Nikon Rangefinder line (S, S2, SP, S3)

I find it difficult to be objective about my CONTAX IIIA. I was born in 1947. My father must have bought this camera around 1955. When he trusted it to me in 1970, I switched from a KODAK STARFLASH to the CONTAX IIIA. Imagine going from a plastic revolver toy to a real laser sabre straight from Star Wars... Such was my striking impression.

Strength:
Nice, efficient and lovable old machines. Kiev are cheap and mostly reliable. Contaxes are the best.
Weakness:
Contaxes in good condition are expensive. Kiev are cheap but sometimes less reliable (choose a good russian Ebay provider..). I have been using Contax vintage cameras and their Kiev Russian clones for many years and I got the best pictures from them. The lenses are great (Russian Jupiters as as well as German Sonnars) although the germans are generally sharper and the russians softer. I love handling these old mechanical masterpieces. Engineering quality is incredible and the meters I have on my favourite cameras are accurate enough to get nicely exposed pictures sixty years after they were built. Anyway, Henry Scherrer takes care of inaccurate meters for my cameras and all's well. If you are fed up with modern electronic gizmos, get a nice Contax ($350 is an average rpice) (or a good Kiev IV for $75-100)on Ebay, study how they work and start making pictures. Normally you have both a camera and a hobby you will enjoy using for years. I suggest you use Contaxes and Kievs together. They are fully compatible you can swap lenses. The handling is the same. Customer Service Henry Scherer is THE ONE for servicing Contaxes : http://www.zeisscamera.com/ Similar Products Used: Zorkis, Feds, Olympus point and shoot cameras. |

Build quality. Lenses.
Weakness:
Tough to use with glasses. This camera prompted me to sell my modern AF SLR. Compact, quiet, and a dream to use. The build quality is amazing. And the Zeiss lenses superb. Customer Service Henry Scherer does wonderful work on these fine old cameras. |

Strength:
Engineering quality, optics, classic look
Weakness:
Viewfinder is awkard for eye-glass wearers; film loading and unloading As other reviewers have noted, this is a beautifully engineered product from a bygone age. The post-war, West german optics are superb. I have the Biogon 35mm, the Sonnar 50mm f1.5, and the Sonnar 85mm, and all are outstanding, although care must be taken when shooting towards the sun, as flare can be a problem. Film loading and unloading are awkward: the spool into which the film is threaded is not fixed to the camera body and drops out easily, and would therefore be easy to lose. There is no film rewing lever, and I wear off the skin on my fingers re-winding! The round view hole takes some getting used to, and it is easy to scratch eye-glasses. However, the focusing square is clear, and the wide rangefinder base makes for very accurate focusing. In any event, the superb optics more than offset any disadvantage. When I am feeling lazy, I use a modern Cosina Voigtlander R2C as the camera body, although some would consider this heretical. The camera and 3 lenses take up remarkably little room, and form an ideal photography kit for the travel photographer. Strength:
Size, balance, optics, silky-smooth operation, beautiful finish.
Weakness:
Veiw finder is tough with glasses. I intend to get an accessory finder for it. After 40 years of serious photography with just about everything, I think I've found my camera! Sonnar 50mm F1.5 is the best lens I've ever used! I do a lot of hyperfocal distance "street shooting" and the pictures are just gorgeous! My Nikons and Rolleis are gathering dust. Customer Service Found a GREAT repair guy on the web. Similar Products Used: Canon VT, Voightlander Vitessa, Nikon, Pentax and Minolta SLR, Rollei TLR. |

Weakness:
Extremely expensive lenses and accessories IF you can find them. I never knew that the camera itself could make photography more exciting and fun. I've always dabbled in photography and had some college courses using an SLR but this camera takes everything up a notch. I'll never live up to it's full potential but it has allowed me to take some beautiful photos of my baby boy which my family members cherish. My sister actually said "your camera takes really nice photos" and when I visited the East Coast they were all surprised at what I was using. It is a well designed and beautifully crafted instrument that I am proud to use. I get stopped every time I use it in public by folks who want to admire it. I've turned down several offers to sell it to passers by. If you enjoy taking photos and understand the basics of photography I'd highly recommend one of these. Go for the IIIA "colored dial" if you can find and afford it. The 50MM Sonnar is superb and I'm using my 85MM and 135MM (Russian knock offs both) less and less because they simply don't rate. Customer Service huh? Similar Products Used: Minolta and Canon SLR's |

Quality of manufature, the feel, stunning quality of results. Carl zeiss lenses!
Weakness:
Not made anymore, and thus not many places for sevicing. The Zeiss ikon Contax IIIa and IIa cameras are remarkable peices of machinery. I have both a IIIaCD and a IIaBD. The quality or workmanship is like nothing else I have tried, and the results are stunning (with the West German 2/50mm). I just cant stop taking pictures with one of these - everything just feel right! These cameras have bags of character - unlike modern things! Viewfinder The camera is perfectly made, but the viewfinder is difficult, compared to the Leica M series and current Voigtllanders. That said, if you can accustom yourself to the viewfinder, and other eccentricities (knob wind) due to age of the design, you will be amazed at the results. The 50 mm 1.5 Sonnar I have on IIA I borrowed from a friend is astonishing. I've been on a search for the best 50 for years (silly, yes, I'm now cured) and shot with every brand, including standouts such as Leica Ms and Rs (great), Zeiss Planars for Contax SLRs and G series Planars. Summicron 40s for Leica CLs. etc. The Sonnar beat them all. True all the above are great-to super great, but keep in mind the Sonnar was made in about 1956 and not in perfect shape.
