Pentax IQ Zoom 928 Point and Shoot

Pentax IQ Zoom 928 Point and Shoot

DESCRIPTION

You just can't beat a wide angle lens for capturing the whole gang in the picture. The IQZoom 928 has earned a ground-swell of support from serious photographers who need a point and shoot. This may be because of the multi coated lens . . . or the ability to override the exposure. You'll need to decide for yourself.

Strength:

Pentax IQZoom Ultra Compact 28-90 Beautiful clear pictures. Easy operating. Purchased new in 1999.
Landscape pictures wonderful. I took it on many trips and captured beautiful ocean scenes and sunsets.
Pictures are as good as when I took them. Love this camera.

Weakness:

I need to find a place that repairs this camera. A wide pink color comes across the pictures now. The lens keeps projecting in and out also (even on original battery).

Flash works, zoom works. Only problem is the pink color stripe that covers 1/2 the picture. Otherwise I have all the original receipts, boxes, instruction books, warranty paperwork, camera case, strap, batteries and all that came with it when I bought it in 1999. It is otherwise in excellent condition. It has today's date which it has kept automatically synchronized since purchase. My favorite. That is why I have kept it for so long.

Customer Service

I'd love to have my Pentax repaired..if possible.

I have presently Canon PowerShot SX510 HS Digital Camera with 8GB Memory card purchased recently in 2015, but when holding it, too many buttons are in wrong place and it has to be held a certain way or you end up getting instructions or something you don't need for that shot. The pictures are also slightly unbalanced (distorted) so that something looks shorter than it actually is. That is also in its original box and case with instructions. I don't feel that it is as good as the Pentax. Also had a Canon ELPH, but that disappeared in my moving a few years ago. Just recently gave away an old Brownie 625 Box camera and another box camera but have had so many I can't remember them all. Also had a Sure-Shot, Kodak. Had many cameras over 70 years experience.

Bulky Photos not sharp enough

I wanted a 28mm point and shoot, and this one had great reviews. However, both my wife and I have been disappointed with the performance. Mainly we find fault with the focusing or the lens quality, not sure which. Prior to this we had Nikon p&s with a wide zoom, and it was much worse. So maybe we are just expecting better quality photos than a consumer level p&s zoom will do. Our next buy will be an Olympus IS-30 DLX.

Just love the camera, given its limits. If they are still around, the only other cameras to consider would be the Rolli Prego AF with a Schneider lens or the Samsung Maximum 90i. Any other camera that starts at 28 usually ends at 70, a range of only 2.5. The 928 has a range of 3.2. Cameras that start at 38 and go to 120 or 140 fail to mention the abysmal f-stop you''ll be shooting at 140 wide open, f11 or 13. I guess they assume you''ll be forced into shoot high-speed film. The sad thing is that 120 or 140 aren''t strong enough for most tele situations you want it for. I have run at least 125 rolls of film through it. Most of the reviews I have read posted here are fairly honest and I agree with most of the observations. It is a dependable well built camera that, depending on use/abuse, may break, but that should not deter your decision. It is an extraordinarly sophisticated devise. This camera was introduced in October of 1994. The slighty smaller 928M which has the same zoom range has superceded it but the speed is f/4.8 - f/10.9. The original 928 has a range of f3.5 to 9.9. I was considering purchasing the new one because it is smaller, but decided not to because I am

Plastic body! The following could have happened to any hi-tech electric camera. After many years plastic fatigue struck and the back just gave up, cracked, and fell off! Repair department would not believe me and would not honor my extended warranty. In July of 1999, after a vacation in the stifling heat and humidity of Virginia, the brain/chip got fried. It was the infamous U7, a general code for an electrical command problem, with the zoom & the zoom function/mechanism in the flash. I insisted that they replace the entire board with the defective chip because I didn''t want to still have a board with old aged chips. The friendly patient fellows in service told me what I alread knew, that heat & humidity is very bad also because of condensation, particularly when going from going out from an air-conditioned environment out into a heavy humid one. They suggested putting camera in ziplock bag and letting condensation form on the bag, not the interior components of the camera. The camera is a bit larger than those with a range of only 28-70 particularly in length and to some degree depth so that pocketable feature is a bit of stretch. Like all cameras of this sort, getting in

I have owned this camera since 1996 and love it! I agree with most of what others have said in previous reviews. If you are a serious photographer and want to just go out on vacation or to an event without the usual load of equipment, this is one of only perhaps two other cameras with a 28 to 90 range that you could consider. Great for architecture exteriors and interiors as well as landscapes. "The" perfect 35mm auto-focus camera to take on vacation and not be burdened with all your SLR stuff and keep your companion happy and yet still be able to capture great dramatic image.

Weakness:

Could be a little sturdier.

After writing an earlier review here I shopped for a better point and shoot. What I have found is that there isn''''t any as good. In a point and shoot, 28 mm is indispensable, much more so than 120 mm. The 90 is more than adequate most of the time. The lens is excellent and faster than any other zoom point and shoot I could find. Low light is rarely a problem. This camera offers features other point and shoots don''''t and I have used all of them at one time or another. Seeing the ratings others have given other point and shoot cameras and then checking the camera out I will have to considerably upgrade my rating.e

Strength:

Wide / fast lens, reasonably robust camera
Great night photos
Lots of manual overrides. Spot focus mode, Infinity mode, Bulb mode, great for portraits, macro, shooting out of windows, shooting without flash at concerts.
Awesome travel camera.
As close as you'll get to SLR type functions in a P&S.

Weakness:

Tends to underexpose, I normally go .5 to +1.0EV
As with most P&S cameras, use 200 or 400 film if you don't have a steady hand. I carry a foldaway 5 section tripod.
Zoom broke down with error code.
Flash broke down once.

I bought this thing back in 1994 after seeing it in Japan. 120+ rolls later, it's still about the best camera you can get for the price, highly recommended for the advanced photographer because of the many modes / over-rides. Superb, sharp photos. Get the remote control for bulb mode photos. http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/5938/Gal_World.html
Dropped it a few times, and kept on going. DON'T drop on the lens side, it can sustain falls over 8 feet. I've done it a few times.
Don't fool yourself and buy the super zoom models, they're too dark (f/13) to be useful.
My other choice would be a Olympus, but my friend's broke after the 5 roll.

Customer Service

Good / Fast service
save yourself the pain, don't play with the zoom all the time unless you are actually taking a picture, it's designed to break.

AF system has quit, twice, fortunately under warranty. When it works, it works well!

The IQ Zoom 928 (ESPIO 928 in Canada!) is a great little PS camera, with a sharp lens and a good design. Typical of all PS cameras, they are not designed for very long life and are not terribly reliable. I worked in a camera store for many years, and PS cameras spend a lot of their lives in a repair shop, until the customer gets annoyed enough to get rid of it! (usually moves up to an SLR system)

Customer Service

Fairly quick turnaround, provided you send the camera by courier. Hint: Camera stores are, generally, a bit slack with getting repairs sent away and servicing. You should learn to take care of this, yourself.

Slow aperture on long end

Ton of features not found on many P & S cameras at any price. Consistently good exposures, no mechanical problems ever experienced, although I've only shot about 15 rolls in 3-4 years. Great camera for the price (about $200 mail order), the 28mm setting is a refreshing feature for this type of camera.

Wide angle of 28mm to medium telephoto lens rare in compact camera - most useful at the wide end. I use a Vivitar Series 1 28-90mm on my SLR, and was pleased to find a compact that matched this. Also, exposure compensation +/-2EV by 0.5EV increments is useful and welcome in a compact.

Weakness:

A similar story of breakdowns as your other Canadian correspondents. Bought in April 1995. Flash failed to work while under warranty - repaired. Total failure (H-codes displayed) just out of warranty. C$150 repair charge reduced by Pentax to C$50 when it was pointed out that camera had already broken once. Same failure occurred within the warranty period of that repair. Repaired, but failed again in May 1998 - haven't used it since. Enquired of repair cost recently - C$150 again - about the same as trade-in value. "H1-H0" camera says, but off to work it does not go! Summary: after only 3 years of use, C$300 worth of repairs needed on a C$400 camera just to keep it going. It's not worth having it repaired, but I am sending it back to Pentax so they can analyse it and improve.

At outset, great design, good features, easy to use. Most handy feature -it fits compactly in pocket or backpack when broken down. Sorry, would advise friends against this product simply because of frequency of break downs.

Customer Service

OK in reducing repair costs on appeal, pity about the camera.

One of the few point and shoots to go to 28 mm versus 35 or 38.

Weakness:

Got mine from NY mail-order house (won't do that again). My sample spontaneously turned off and on. It also had problem autofocusing in extreme light contrast situations. The worst problem, however, was a large amount of vignetting at 28 mm. Shots I took at the beach were just awfully vignetted at 28 mm. In addition, color and sharpness were not as good as my old Nikon P&S.

Looking for wider range than my Nikon 38-70 P&S offered. Not impressed. Even if the the two technical problems were corrected, it still did not function acceptably at 28 mm. After a couple of test rolls, I ran out and got an N70 and haven't looked back. SLR pics are much better, even with the cheaper 24/28/35 - 105/120 zooms. However, I still use my Nikon 38-70 P&S when mountaineering/skiing, etc.

Customer Service

NY Mail Order: forget about it. You would have better luck negotitating with the IRS.
