Model Reviewed: Stylus Zoom 140 Camera

Strength:

Purchased camera for family snapshots. It was satisfactory until...

Weakness:

...I dropped it about 3 feet and it landed with the zoom extended on a carpet. Cost of repair was 2/3 the cost of the camera.

Not as durable as I would like. Acceptable photos for snapshot purposes.

Customer Service

Expensive.

Excellent camera for the average Joe who just wants to take pictures of his family and on vacation, without any hassle, and get great results.

Strength:

Clarity (when focused properly)
nice clamshell protects lens
Great zoom for daylight
Attractive camera

Weakness:

The flash does not have power to be able to get a clear 140 zoom at night.
Rarely can I get a decent picture with the zoom at dusk--daylight is great with it.
I think it is heavy for a small camera. Wish it was lighter weight to carry in pocket.
Sometimes focusing is difficult (when others are taking the picture for me, it is often out of focus).

I overpaid for this one but it was an anniversary special at Wolf Camera where I got 26 months of free film developing (one per mth) with the camera. That is worth at least $200--hence why I was willing to pay $350.
I love the camera and have taken some great pictures with it. The big disappointment is night photos--the shutter goes too slow and everything is a blurry mess, especially with telephoto--forget it. But I love the daylight pics and have had many complements. I would purchase it again. I give 4 stars for value since it is pricey. I recently took a vacation to Israel and Germany and got some beautiful pictures with this camera. I have had it a little over a year. I would love for it to be lighter weight but I guess that is the sacrifice for the 140 zoom. The comparable Yashica 140 seemed lighter, but it did not have a built in lens protector. I like the style of the clamshell case--that sold me on this camera. I have the champagne color which is beautiful but it scratches easily.

Customer Service

So far, haven't had to deal with Olympus for anything. I purchased at a Camera shop for peace of mind where, hopefully, I will get the service I need.

Strength:

Nice zoom range

Weakness:

Camera would not take pictures if it thought it was too bright outdoors. This is a problem in Arizona. I tried two of them, returned both of them.

Great design and range, but doesn't work in bright light. Lost alot of pictures in Glen Canyon (camera wouldn't take the picture)Who programed this thing?

Customer Service

Didn't use, just returned the cameras

Strength:

The 140mm zoom is very nice and smooth, the remote is efficient and the weatherproof feature would be handy.

Weakness:

Tow of the features DO NOT work. Red Eye Reduction and Night Mode. The shell that covers the lens can close easily on you.

Red eye reduction is NO GOOD. I have two children and used this feature and it did not work well at all. Also, Night Mode is bad! Everything turned out blurry! And last but not least the shell closed half way on me and I thought all of my pictures were taken and I ended up ruining a half a roll of film. I'll be returning this camera.

Strength:

Zoom range/flexibility
All-weather protection
Basic panorama function

Weakness:

Very easy to slide the lens cover onto the side of the extended lens before it fully retracts

I purchased this camera on a recent trip to Japan as a compact travel camera after deciding to leave my 35mm SLR (& lenses) at home. I found the camera very simple to use (despite the Japanese manual) and I was rewarded with some exceptional shots of a wide range of subjects (people/landscapes/action/etc) in different conditions. I have shot about 25 rolls of film in this camera and any disappointing shots have been as a result of user error and certainly not from the camera itself. Obviously care needs to be taken with the zoom lens but I would have no hesitation in recommending this camera to anybody as an excellent point & shoot performer.

Strength:

LOVE this camera! Would buy it again. Easy to load, easy to change settings, LOVE the remote!!

Weakness:

Opening/Closing is a pain. Previous version had on/off button which was better.
RedEye flash flickers too much, but OK once you are used to it.

When my son was 2 months old my old camera quit! So I went to the store and bought 3 to try them out one weekend and then returned the other two. So a fast moving crawler is my primary subject. Works great now, but it took about a week to get used to the shutter speed. For people photos with this camera I'd recommend Fuji 400 with FUJI (not Kodak) development. I've tried almot every combo of film speed, brand, and development and for my photos that seems best. I'd recomend playing around to find what's best for you with ANY camera too!

Strength:

Great flash. Good sharp pictures. Telephoto good indoors. Use in house, weddings, parties, etc.

Weakness:

When I used telephoto at full zoom to bring anything closer for landscape, scenic outdoor shots I lost the blue sky. The distant scenery got light and fuzzy.

I feel that I bought a house camera. I am going to look into SLR camera's with a separate telephoto lens to suit my needs.

Customer Service

Were willing to check it out if I mailed it to there technitions.

Strength:

lightweight and took good pictures but

Weakness:

I had it about 2 years and took very good care of it. One day it stopped working, put in new battery, finally sent it in to Olympus and they want $169 to fix it. ARE THEY NUTS?

Says is water resistant, etc. but I was very careful with the handling and they want $169 to make it work again. RIP OFF>
