first of all - buy one direct from Russia, not from the over-inflated lomo.com (Austria), you'll pay half the price, and may even get an original russian model (which some folks reckon are better than the new ones). if you want to take photos of your kids etc. buy an Olympus Stylus. if you want to be a serious photographer, buy a SLR. the LOMO is fun, yes, that's the word, and dare i say 'quirky', the results can be massively impressive, or somewhat disappointing. it does something strange with exposures, it creates odd colors, it has a slight 'fish eye' effect - shoot often, shoot anything, just every now and again you'll get something amazing out of it that will make the whole experience worthwhile.

The tunnel vision effect
The auto long exposure

Weakness:

Unpredictability (Or it should be it's strength?)

hype

there's been so much hype about them, and the $150 requested at lomo.com or amazon seems a little extreme, so try and find one direct from russia - you'll pay around half the price, and can still get new, unopened 1991 models direct. the lomo is NOT a toy, it has a glass lens and is made in russia, it's not some plastic-lensed throwaway camera. at the same time, it has a slightly 'toy' feel about it because of its cult following and sometimes strange results. if you are a serious photographer, it may not be for you - sometimes results are too blurry or 'arty', sometimes strange saturation. if you just want to point and click, the LOMO does really well in good light, but there are plenty of excellent 35mm compacts that do this too. but the LOMO excels if you like to shoot often and shoot peculiar things. it loves color, it works best with cheap film, it can take night shots brilliantly (with a steady hand). it just requires some practice, and i confess i'm no way near as proficient with it as i hope to be - but the learning is half the fun. the element of surprise is its best feature, but rememeber, most cameras can produce startling pictures, it's who's behind them that counts! the lomo.com approach is a little overhyped, but the lomo.org message board seems frequented by creative individuals who really enjoy their LOMOs and what they can do with them - and i think that's the key - enjoyment - because the LOMO brings a smile to my face sometimes, and that's got to be worth something.

Strength:

Great ergonomics
Vivid, fast lens

Weakness:

quality control?

Great little camera, for what it does. If you're looking for a crystal-clear lens for taking portait-like shots, this isn't it. If you're looking for a simple camera that can capture pictures in any light, with vibrant colors, and want a camera that can fit in a pocket or a backpack to capture candids, this camera is hard to beat.

New, they're selling for $150 with some dubious freebies. New, and like-new camera can be found on Ebay for half that price.

Strength:

lens f2,8 is fast and has good definition

Weakness:

frame advancing wheel breaks easily and repairing,at least here in italy is really hard and silly expensive

lomographers are really a creative group of people but if the price of such an economical camera gets 6 times the value something is rotten....good lens, but not in frontlight conditions absolutely (remember starwars?),but mecanic is really fragile
