Strength:

Lens: from 38 to about 100 mm rates as well as or better than consumer SLR zooms. Flash exposure system Real time shutter.

Weakness:

Relatively weak flash. Slow, aperture-wise, lens and no aperture priority setting, but you won''t find these in any point and shoot in the price range

For the price, I don''t see a better value for people snapshots. It can be used for "serious" photography within limitations. I always use it in spot focus/metering mode. I never use red eye reduction with any camera-it slows down the shutter response too much. 38 mm as the widest setting precludes using the camera for landscapes

Strength:

easy to use great features and pictures

Weakness:

poor flash location

I purchased this camera because of the great reviews on this site. The camera is a great overall product for the money. Easy to use and full of features. My wife takes many of our pictures. Our twin girls photograph well and the red eye actually works. Be patient with some of the minor quirks. If you are a purist photographer buy an SLR. If you want great pictures buy this camera.

Strength:

Sharp lens, accurate focus, light weight, compact, versatile control.

Weakness:

Flash always pop out when turn power on. Shutter button a little bit tight. LCD has no backlight and small.

A very good and easy to use camera. The pictures are very sharp. Camera is light and compact and can be easily carried in pocket. The hybrid focus system is much more acurate than the active focus system of the Olympus Superzoom 120, especially for distant object.

Fantastic camera. As good as many an SLR

I bought this after comparing the Pentax Espio 140
and the Nikon 120. I made the right choice. My other kit is a Canon EOS 600 + various Canon lens
and I think the shots from my Canon Sureshot 120, compare favourably with the SLR

Strength:

Good pictures, fast and sure auto focus, no shutter lag(!), retains certain settings in most modes and all settings in personal mode, very even flash coverage that does not over or underexpose & good redeye reduction. Auto exposure accurate enough for slide film. Compactness. Optional remote is great for long exposures.

Weakness:

Smallish aperature, not weatherproof.

A terrific camera that solves most of the annoyances of point & shoots (slow / picky / inaccurate auto focus, shutter lag). Weatherproofing would make it the perfect small automatic camera. While researching I tried to play with every P&S I could get my hands on and this one is definitely *the* standout as far as how it "handles". The pictures are sharp and the flash is truly impressive for it's even coverage and excellent metering. Also, I should point out that batteries are around $10 a pair at Target or Wal-Mart, you don't need to pay $17 like some people have complained. I also must say I returned the first one I bought because the pictures were not sharp. I exchanged it for another one (same model) because of all the high praise for it's sharpness here and on other web sites - I'm glad I read this or I would have gotten something else rather than give it another chance - I'm very happy the 2nd time around.

Customer Service

Haven't used customer service, however I can say that Canon USA is pretty slow to respond to literature requests from their web site.

Strength:

Great overall camera.
Not too heavy, sharp photos, simple to use all the features, I like the multilingual caption feature,

Weakness:

I would have like to see the wide angle as of 28mm, slow shutter in low light without flash, Expensive compared to many P&S cameras

This camera is a great practical for all users, it is great for travelling, I keep it with me everywhere I go, I find that hard to with my SLR and all the accessories,
I highly recommend it.

Customer Service

I have not used it yet, hope it stays that way

Model Reviewed: Sure Shot Classic 120

Strength:

Truthfully, I selected this camera because of its beautiful classic design but I was amazed at the sharp photos I've gotten and its ease of use. The general auto-settings provide more control than other point and shoots I've tested. It's weight (including batteries AND film) is light without being too light. The flash seems more sophisticated than the other models and the photos have less of those awful heavy shadows I've seen from other p&s cameras.

Weakness:

Expensive batteries: The manual mentioned that 2 batteries will last for approx. 26 rolls of film. At $16.99 per pair, they can be quite costly. The close-up frame in the view finder is too vague for my taste and I wish that the area could be blacked out for a more precise proximity of the actual image I'll be capturing. I too wish that the zoom began at 28mm though I find the zooming speed just fine.

I've only owned SLRs previous to this camera so perhaps I am an unfair judge when it comes to this camera's weaknesses; they're the nature of point and shoots. All and all, I think I'll have to make less sacrifices between my SLRs and this model than the other point and shoots I've tried and returned. For the money, it's quite a bargain. I paid $199 at Ritz camera (batteries were not included).

Model Reviewed: Sure Shot Classic 120

Strength:

Ease of use and a sharp lens. Spot Meter. Has a Personal Mode for setting the metering and flash settings you like - and they stay set when camera is off or in another mode. Good flash and the best "red eye" reduction system I've used. There are features on the camera that don't exist on some SLRs, yet any child can use it in AUTO mode. The images are exceptionally good. I've seen 11x14" enlargements from the 120 that were amazingly sharp.

Weakness:

Like most P&S zooms it's slow at the long end of the zoom, and I wish the range started at 28mm, but that's about it for weaknesses.

A great camera similar in heritage to the Canon Z115 and Z135. Read my full user report at the zoom camera link at www.geocities.com/jpmccormac

Model Reviewed: Sure Shot Classic 120

Strength:

Sharp photos; wonderful rich textures; many features; any idiot can learn to use it

Weakness:

diopter knob is recessed and a little difficult to turn.

I chose this camera after lots of agonizing research. I was going to buy a fixed lens camera (Yashica Super T4 or Olympus Stylus Epic)but saw this one and all of its' potential. The price seemed a little steep at around $200, but once I got my photos back...I could see why. They are the crispest photos I have ever seen out of a point and shoot. Much better than my Elph. They rival some done with an SLR. My 18 month old was caught in motion at the pool and on a swing and the action shots look fantastic. The landscape shots were superb. The macros of our flowers in the garden were rich in color and very sharp. The portrait mode worked well. A few indoor photos could have come out better...but I clearly think that those were due to my error learning to use the camera. The flash seems well powered and the red-eye reduction works well. All of the programmed modes are useful and have given good results. The manual controls of the camera are well laid out and allow you to adjust any of the pre-programmed modes to suit your needs. The diopter adjustment knob could be a little easier to adjust...but I dont see that as any reason to not highly recommend this camera to anyone. The manual is also fairly good.

Strength:

Excellent zoom range. Excellent image control for a P&S. Takes wonderful pictures. Good value.

Weakness:

None.

This is a wonderful travel camera. My wife and I bought one just prior to a trip to Europe for the reason that we didn't want to lug our EOS-3 around all over and possible get it stolen. I thought I might regret using a point and shoot for such once in a lifetime shots, but after developing the film, my doubts were put to rest. The lens on this camera, while possibly on the slow side, is very sharp. Also the zoom range is wonderful to take in all focal lengths that most photographers usually use. All in all, another excellent product from Canon.
