Strength:

Picture Clarity
Simple Auto Mode

Weakness:

Too Many functions
APS film selection and limited processing availability

I love this camera. I bought it when my infant son began crawling at 6 months, I realized then that I could not focus my Pentax ME Super fast enough to keep up with him. I decided to try the APS format because of its ease of use and size availability. In auto mode (PhD - Push here dummy), it's as easy to use as a point and shoot. On the other side, you have full manual control. I still have not had time to get a comfort level with manual operation (the set up is complex). Picture quality is excellent. Focus is always razor sharp. I just hope APS can stick around, it is a great format.

poor masking in view finder

This is a great camera that tahes sharp pictures and accurate metering in all situations. The APS film has now extended into the ISO800 range which will make this camera more versitile. I hope that Nikon will develope a successor model in the future.I would recommend this camera to any serios photographer who is interested in a none 35mm format.

Strength:

Top APS SLR camera.
Features of N70.
Solid feel for its class.
Advance/Basic mode switch.
Light weight.

Weakness:

Battery lid metal part broken off.
Lack of view findermasking when changing picture format.

If you are looking for a all purpose light weight SLR camera, this is the best choice. Great features, accurate exposure and good flash system. You can use the Basic Mode for Point and Shoot, and advance mode for more critical situation. Sharpness and contrast for the IX zooms are acceptable. APS prints are more grainy due to smaller film size. I paid top dollar for the body, IX24-70 and IX70-180 Zooms three years ago to replace my stolen Nikon F system. Now you can buy the same outfit for half of the MSRP. I am saving money to buy the Contax N1 and the two Zeiss zooms next month. But I definitely will keep the Pronea 6i. EXCELLENT BUY!

Customer Service

Great - my first body metering system are not working correctly, Wolf Camera found the replacement for me the next day.

Strength:

The point and shoot ease of use is fantastic while still allowing me the option of manual override. Camera weight blew me away. Try lugging around my FM with auto winder attached.

Weakness:

Had to glue the battery door back together while on vacation. Always keep a spare set of batteries on hand, because this thing eats 'em.

This camera is lots of fun, and in auto mode its a no brainer. Now that Fuji came out with 800 ISO I'll probably pack the FM away.

Strength:

The Pronea 6i has a fabulous array of auto and semi auto options in exposure mode, focusing and advance.
The camera felt great in hand with its built in grip and rubberized covering.
Matrix metering and flash are excellent in most situations. Accepts most all Nikkor lenses.

Weakness:

Largest APS SLR in its class. Larger than many 35mm SLR's.
No DOF preview, limited APS film options, no format mask in viewfinder.

I think the Pronea 6i is the most advanced and versatile camera in its class. if the limitations of APS film aren't a problem this is an excellent camera if you can find it. If you want to shoot more than color negative film for limited enlargement I suggest you get a Nikon N65 or Canon Elan or Rebel.

Strength:

Full Auto is as easy as Point & Shoot

Features of the Nikon N70 body in an APS! Great Camera!

Weakness:

Built-in flash is great for fill-flash but watch out for the red eye.

No DOF Preview

I have put about 250 rolls of film through this camera in the last 2 years, all with fabulous results. I also purchased the 24-70mm IX Nikkor, 60-180mm IX Nikkor and a Quantaray PZ-1 hot shoe flash at the same time. As my first SLR it was great to have the Basic mode for the first 6 months or so while I had a chance to learn the basics of photography. I was then able to extend my creativity by going into the Advanced setting where features like Aperture & Shutter priority mode with metering results that made an amateur look like a pro. Features like exposure compensation, exposure bracketing and continuous mode shooting made a lot of these great shots possible.

I have never had the battery issue that most have mentioned, I often switch films between rolls which require a lot of rewinding and forwarding by the camera and I still consistently get 30-40 rolls before changing.

The rear display panel is very easy and intuitive after reading the manual and practicing with a few rolls. The panel illumination is great when shooting fireworks or other low-light situations. Probably because I have used the 6i for so long and have only put about 15 rolls through my F100, but the 6i seems about as easy to use if you have the time to setup and compose your image.

This camera has made me so excited about photography, mainly from the great results, that I just purchased an F100 & N80 with a bunch of lenses and gear. My wife has inherited the Pronea 6i so she can start to learn the basics and become her own creative photog. She will eventually move to the N80, due to cheaper developing of 35mm, but the printing of the Aperture and Shutter speed on the back of each image is invaluable when first learning how to shoot.

I couldn't have asked for anything more in a camera w/ multiple lenses under $450.
I honestly believe this is the best APS SLR camera ever manufactured.

Strength:

Wide range of options, digital status display integrated into viewfinder, easy to use even in advanced mode, battery lifetime acceptable, camera settings printed on the back of the photographies

Weakness:

viewfinder too dark, poor results in twilight and darker settings, expensive batteries and films, APS System in some situations not compatible with chemical photography, too heavy

I bought my Pronea 600i in Spring 2000 and used it for a Greece trip shortly afterwards. I took about 500 photographies mostly in the "advanced" mode using a Sigma lens (UC ZOOM 28-105mm 1:4-5,6). I have to say that i was very pleased with most of the results i got (well, not the price) but there were some situations where my camera (or i myself) seemed to have problems. I admit that i'm not a very experienced photographer and most of my pics' were snapshots but at some occasions i tried to use all the modes and functions the Pronea offers. First of all the view finder appears very dark. If you look through it in daylight you see a lot of dark "dots" on it, like dirt, so that you see your sourroundings with a little dark touch. Is that normal? In twilight and darker settings for example a sunset my pictures were very dark even when i used a series of 0.5 to 5 seconds for exposure. A friend of mine took a pic' of the same scenery using a very old pentax model and he had very pleasing more natural results. Some of my pics' of that series were blured due to the fact that i held the camera in my hands using 1 or more seconds for the pic - well my friend had no problem with taht using up to 1,5 sec for exposure. Well that's the only situation where i was disappointed of the pronea well but that could be due to my lack of experience. I tried a lot but i still have the problem. I'd be greatful for any advice! Most of my pics were really great and i had fun by taking photograhs of waving flags and running people etc. with very short exposure of 1/3000 sec. Overall I think the Nikon Pronea 600i is a good camera but i would'nt buy it again i have to admit 'cause sometimes the colores of the APS film and the resolution are not compatible with chemical photograpies. But once you own it you can have a lot of fun using the features of the Pronea!

Strength:

Compact.
Mid Roll Change.
Viewfinder covers 100% in H format (50mm lens).
Very good metering; Very good fill-in flash (with SB28).
Fast x-sync (1/180sec).

Weakness:

Masking of viewfinder in C en P.
IX-lenses.

I already had a F100, so I was looking for a F80 as second body.
I found the Pronea 600i in the store for only 10.000 Bef (1/3 of F80-price).
The MRC is practical and the body is light/compact (I can cary two bodies in my bag without too much weight).
Now my F100 is always loaded with FUJI 100 iso slidefilm.
The pronea is loaded FUJI D100 or F100 (natural colors for sunny outdoor usage, KODAK B/W or AGFA Futura II 100 (bright colors for indoor usage).
In APS I never use any colorfilm above 100 iso (for grain).
I was very disapointed with the IX-lens (simply NOT sharp). The AF 28-105 ED is much better, but for REAL GOOD quality I use single AF 50 mm (VERY CHEAP ans EXTREMELY SHARP; you almost never need a D lens), AF 20mm or AF 105mm. Try it and you will never use a zoom again (unless on holiday and don't want to cary 2 kg of glass)!
The 50 mm gives a little zoom on APS (+/- 60 mm in 35 mm film) but this is "compensated" bij the wider H print format.
