Strength:

f2.8 lens; extremely compact & light; good pictures in low light conditions

Weakness:

No mid-roll change; blondes suffer from "red eye" when the flash is used during low light conditions

The Elph Jr. takes excellent pictures for a point & shoot. I've only shot 5 rolls of film and the few problem pictures involved difficult lighting conditions. I took pictures during my 7 year old niece's birthday party indoors where lighting was hit & miss. Her blue eyed friends suffered from "red eye" whenever the flash was used in very low light conditions.

It doesn't have a zoom lens or mid-roll change, but this has to be the smallest camera I've seen so far. I can carry it any pocket of my jacket, shirt, or pants. So it's always ready if a photo op presents itself!

Strength:

Good quality pictures even in low light conditions, easy to handle and carry around. Good shots at short distance too. Sharp pics.

Weakness:

Too fast exposing produces blurred pics,as there is too long time set for setting the distance and exposure.

I use this camera beside my Olympus OM2000 for quick shots and where there is hard circumstances to set a manual equipment like rain. Many friends have this camera, as it was gift of my company for the Millennium for employees. Several experienced break down, sign H appeared and there was no home cure even after removing batteries for prolonged time.

Strength:

Small, user friendly, easy to use. Excellent lens, sharp with good contrast.

Weakness:

The Viewfinder is a bit small, a weakness common to all the Elph cameras. If you are a glasses wearer this is going to take a little getting used to.

The APS format has a few weaknesses of its own in regard to price of purchase and processing, as well as enlargements over 8x10 (which is really pushing it). A great "Grab Shot" camera.

This is an excellent "Grab-Shot" Camera, take it with you wherever you go. It is flexible enough for a pro with an exceptionally accurate exposure system that seems to favor color or black & white prints with equal accuracy. It offers an outstanding range of features for such a small camera and this is nothing to sneeze at. I keep mine with me all the time. 9 on a scale of 1-10, with its only drawback being the viewfinder as it is so small. P.S. If you have really large hands, this will take a lot of getting used to ... but it is well worth it! Great piece of equipment!

Strength:

Size, obviously.
APS film handling is great.
Fast lens for a p&s.
Quieter than ELPH.
Faster focusing than ELPH.
Better viewfinder than ELPH.
Other complaints notwithstanding, battery life is better than the ELPH (I'm still on my first battery after about 30 rolls; of course, I use flash sparingly)

Weakness:

A little too light, no steadying "heft"
No detente for the flash mode and self-timer buttons (hard to set without looking at the symbols)
No positive film (at least in US)
Weak flash (it's tiny)
Questionable durability - it gets thrown around in my bag and still works OK but the magnetic recording quit after about 20 rolls.
The battery cover looks like it won't hold forever (I keep a rubber band around the camera)
It's annoying to reset the flash mode every single time I turn the camera on, since I hardly ever use the flash.
Backlit subjects are a problem.
No infinity lock.
Flash blinks on self-timer EVEN IF the flash is turned off.

Like the original ELPH, this is a great "take everywhere" camera (see my previous review of the ELPH). And like the ELPH, it's all about expectations. This is a terrific shooter out to about 20 feet. I have it or the ELPH with me almost all the time. The lens is better than the ELPH and faster focus makes it even better for candids. With decent light, 400 speed film and 4X6 prints, it is as satisfactory as a 35mm p&s.

Customer Service

For an $89 consumer electronics item? Not very likely. (But I haven't tried either.)

Strength:

-compact, lightweight, price
-easy to use

Weakness:

-I have to literally spank my camera as it attempts to load Kodak brand film. When it fails I have to remove the battery to reset the error. Other film brands (which are harder to find at most stores) do not seem to exhibit loading problems.
-no MRC
-doesn't it read the magnetic XI for alread exposed film ?!?

A good concept for the casual photographer: compact, easy to use, fairly inexpensive, but...
Does this camera not read the magnetic portion onto the film to find out if it was ever exposed?? It would have certainly prevented me from double-exposing my film. And when the film didn't load, my Elph Jr. advanced my blank film to position 3. This experience has left me skeptic of Canon's quality and consistency, and also seriously considering other brands.

Weakness:

Expensive developing. Not suitable if you travel to different countries, most of places not equiped for APS developing.

I brought this camera April '01 to take some good Panaromic pictures, but i face a Major problem. I shoot some pictures keeping MODE as Panaromic mode or Classic Mode. When i finally develop NO pictures is getting in pararomic or Classic. Every picture is printing only in Wide Angle. I sent an email regarding to Canon Support Service and waiting for there reply...(hoping they reply..other wise i have to send to service center). I hate sending product to there service center within a year.

General Reliability

I purchased this camera as a small family camera to use on vacation. It worked great for about 2 months then died. The camera then went off to Canon for over 6 weeks. Got it back, shot 4 or 5 rolls and every roll developed out of focus...d*** that smarts... Thanks Canon! Ritz suggested another trip to the service center, however after that I would not trust shooting with this camera again. Ritz refused to replace the camera and could not guarantee it would be replaced by Canon. Canon would not return email or letters, and phone support went no where. I have owned 3 digitals for myself and currently shoot on an Ricoh RDC-7 and am going to purchase a Kodak MC3 tonight. This camera is less expensive than the wasted time, film, and processing on the Canon.

I own a computer company and cannot understand how companies can bowl over people like this. For the sake of a crummy $100 camera, both companies lost a customer for life. Shame on Canon and Ritz.

Model Reviewed: ELPH Jr.

Strength:

I like to carry the Elph on bike rides. It's design makes it easy to shoot while riding the bike for great natural action shots of my friends and scenery.

Weakness:

APS film is more expensive than 35mm

Not a replacement for a good 35, the Elph performs well in those situations where you really don't want to tote an obtrusive SLR. This camera performs best with ISO 100 film for two reasons: 1. finer grain/sharpness; 2. Less depth of fields makes subjects stand out from the background.

Nice looking compact camera that makes sharp pictures. Especially the small size makes it a camera that you can take with you any time. Even under low-light conditions the pictures still come out sharp.

Weakness:

No problem at all yet

Great camera with all the basic features packed into an amazingly small fancy gadget.
