Strength:

Easy to operate. Total manual control. Very good selection of optics.

Weakness:

No problems.

Solid, dependable, basic SLR. The original K1000 with the all-metal shell seems to be better than the later model, which uses plastic for the top-plate. I use mine mostly with a wide-angle to medium-telephoto macro zoom. Although it has all-manual operation, it is astonishingly easy and natural to use. I'm not certain that it is the best SLR for the beginner.

Strength:

Takes a licking and keeps on ticking. You can't kill this thing.

Weakness:

No DOF preview, no provision for motor drive or winder, no self-timer.

My first SLR was a K-1000. Even though I now have more gear than I can carry, mostly Nikon, I still have the old K-1000, and I still use it.

Strength:

This camera has provided bulletproof
reliability from 0 to 100 deg F
0- 100% RH; sea level to 3000m
Gets compliments from serious photographers who understand what it is.

Weakness:

Have never masteredloading the film
quickly in 'panic=need' situation.

Should be every beginners first camera as its manual operation develops skills, its
simplicity and reliability never disappoint, its price represents little barrier to entry,
but doesn't mind if you dream about the FM2...its Ok if you never get there though

Customer Service

Strength:

Basic mechanical camera metal body. I do mostly slides of flat art work. It's one of the few inexpensive fully mechanical cameras still available. Takes good pictures dependending on the lens and there are --Many lens available for this camera.

Weakness:

Hate the way it loads film. The only weakness.

Good price and it works.

Strength:

Bullet proof camera! Takes a little time, but gives excelent, crisp photos.

Weakness:

nope

Great camera if you are not in a big hurry to take a picture. I shoot with a cannon eos3, sigma sa-5, nikon f3, up to a hassleblad 500 cm. for my personal shots, I grab the k-1000, and also use it for professional work. I always bring it as a spare. There are a ton of used lens for this camera at a great price.

Strength:

A high quality, all mechanical camera.

Weakness:

The Pentax range of lenses isn't very full. Their high quality lenses are more expensive (due to low production) than thos of Canon and Nikon.

Possibly the best learner camera on the market, though I'd go for a Nikon FM2, cost no object.
