After years of using a Minolta SRT101 I finally went to an AF camera. I sure wish I had done that sooner! I like my SRT101, but the point & shoot that everyone laments about is a great feature. And you can use this camera in manual mode if you want. Just takes some figuring out. All those dials and buttons! Date back is great. Now I can remember when I was there!
Weakness:
All those dials and buttons! You guys at Nikon could not come up with a camera that can just re-wind the dam film at the end of the spool? The auto-focus seems confused with longer focal length lenses. If you get confused with lots of dials and buttons, get the N50 or 60. I'm still trying to figure this thing out. Overall rating of 3 is because the camera don't re-wind the film automatically, and for the less than user-friendly controls. The pictures are outstanding however. Customer Service No problems in 4 months. Similar Products Used: SRT101, Samsung SR4000 program mode slr, manual focus. Haven't heard of it? Kinda rare. |

This camera has a great metering system. It also has a very handy fill flash. The function buttons/dials are not easy to learn, but will come to you after awhile.
Weakness:
The auto focus is slow with the nikkor 70-300 zoom, especially at 300. The lens is quite sharp for a zoom however. The film re-wind could have been automatic, not something you have to push two buttons simultaniously and hold your tongue just right to get accomplished. If you like bells and whistles, this is the camera for you. Really nice to use, and the lenses arn't too pricey. Stick to the Nikon lenses. I do have one Sigma 24mm f3.5. Takes great photos. Almost as good as the Nikkor 50mm 1.8. Customer Service Have had NO problems with this camera. Similar Products Used: I still have the Minolta SRT101 I've owned for 15 years or so. I have two medium format cameras also. |

Motor drive is fairly fast for a camera in this price range (3.1 fps) -
Weakness:
LCD Panel should have a light - Controls are easy to use, but cumbersome... dials are much better - And despite what most people say, the shutter is fairy loud - Uses batteries like crazy! I'm not into the "pro-amateur" arguement, if your good, you can use anything. You make your choices based on the type of photography you do, and the features you need. For me it works fairly well (documentary, sports...) but I wish the camera had a faster auto-focus. It has a good AF system, but it could have a stronger motor. But I guess that comes with spending more money. But for it's price it's probably the best camera in the $500 range. You can present a good arguement for going with the Canon Elan IIe, and because of the eye-contolled focus and the easy to use command dials, it may be better some some people. Its actually a difficult choice, but I made my decision based on Nikon's reputation, which is more of a personal choice. The next real step up is the F100. Solid construction, nice array of features.
Weakness:
Very heavy, changing settings is cumbersome. Not good button layout. This is a great feature packed camera except for the awful button layout and extreme difficulty in changing common camera settings. Customer Service no problems Similar Products Used: Elan IIe |

I treat it like a pro camera and it's taken the abuse wonderfully. It's light weight durable and has all the features I want/need. An excellent value at $400 street price.
Weakness:
The top LCD should be lighted. I carry a mini mag light in my bag for night shooting. The cover for the remote cord socket is easily lost, on my 3rd. I have a tremendous investment in lenses and I love that all of my lenses work with all of my Nikon bodies. I have found the meter to be VERY accurate. You get a sense after a while for lighting conditions that may fool it and bracket but even then 9 out of 10 times the meter is dead on. Customer Service Never had to use. Solid feel; Many features; Have been impressed with photos -- both in sharpness and in exposure.
Weakness:
Interface could be quicker & easier. Also, because I enjoy landscape photography, I really wish it had mirror lock-up, and a lighted control panel. Also, remote cord is ridiculously expensive (as are most Nikon accessories). I feel like this is a very good camera for the price (especially when bought used!), although eventually I'd like to have the N90s as my primary body... Be prepared to read the manual a few times and familiarize yourself with the interface, and you'll be fine. If mirror lock-up isn't important to you, this is a great choice. I am just beginning this hobby and learned alot, but the pictures I have taken with this camara have been very good. I will be doing some commercial photography and hope this camara will continue to grow with me, I love the feel of this camara compared to the Elan I was also considering, and must admit it was the amount of professionals recommending the Nikon system that got my attention. I will also admit that the Elan had more features, but since I intend to move up in camara bodies, I wanted the best system, and was not worried to much about one or two features.
Weakness:
Well the 28-80 lens I bought is loved by everyone except me. I bought a 50mm 1.8 very quick and cannot believe the great pictures I get with a 100 dollar lens. Think very seriously before using a New York mail order company. I love my new N70 and would highly recommend it to anybody. The user interface is not difficult, it is very, very simple to use if you will just look through the manual. I have let five people use this camara and they agree that it is not a problem. Take a hard look at a fixed focal lens rather that a cheap zoom, I promise it will take bettter pictures. Customer Service READ CAREFULLY, I LEARNED MY LESSON DO NOT BUY FROM CAMARA CITY, THEY TREATED ME AWEFULL, AND SENT ME GREY MARKET LENS, AND CHARGED ME FOURTY DOLLARS FOR TWO BATTERIES. BUT I DID VISIT THE LOCAL SERVICE CENTER AND THEY SEEMED EXCELLENT. Similar Products Used: Looked at the Cannon systems too and am sure either would have made a great camara for me. |
