Strength:

- Lightweight
- Inexpensive

Weakness:

- Viewfinder is VERY dim
- Somewhat difficult to set aperture (aperture ring is very close to the front of the body for the 35-70 AIS lens)

I bought the FM10 for my daughter (photography class :)). A reasonable 'starter' SLR, but, if possible, try it before buying (unfortunately, we couldn't find one locally).

It appears to be a very well functioning camera with accurate controls. Very intuitive to use that produces very sharp pictures. I have any issues with the quality.

Strength:

Everything about this camera is great. It is easy to use. This camera makes it easy for anyone and everyone to use. It allows you to have total control over your photos, which can allow you to produce some amazing art. I use it for everything, great range in shutter speed and f/stop. I am 17 years old and photography is a great hobby for anyone. I have won several awards for my photos at adult levels. Just be creative!

Weakness:

Take lots of practice shots before you use it for something important. It takes a couple of rolls to get used to it under different conditions.

great camera for someone who wants to explore fully maunal photography. Well worth the money. Mine is a few years old and it looks brand new.

Customer Service

no need for it :)

Strength:

Not bad at all for an inexpensive beginner and/or student. I've heard complaints about the plastic body, but keep in mind it makes it very lightweight. Just take care of it, and it'll be fine. More plusses-
-Depth of Field preiew lever
-high flash sync (1/125)
-fast shutter speed (1/2000)
-compatible with hundreds of Nikon F-mount lenses
-if bought in kit form, has a decent 35-70mm zoom and case
-2 light meter buttons-regular 1/2 presses shutter and button near top of lens mount. Handy for adjusting shutter speed while looking through viewfinder.
-Multiple-exposure lever
-smooth movement
-metal internals
-inexpensive 70-210 zoom Nikkor available
-great overall value

Weakness:

I've noticed very few with this camera. The viewfinder is a little dim (hard for night shots). The light meter may be a little questionable at low shutter speeds (1/4-1), but you learn from experience. And, for some, the plastic body.

Being a student, I was especially concerned about price. The Nikon jumped out at me because of that first; then, I went and looked at one at a local camera store, and the next day I ordered one. The value is amazing, and there are hundreds of accessories availble. IF YOU BUY IT, GET IT IN THE ORIGINAL NIKON FACTORY KIT!! It comes with a Nikkor 35-70 zoom, batteries, strap, and eveready case. The only way to get it. B&H photo (www.bhphoto.com) seems to have the best price.
Try out the FM10, I think it will be liked. But be aware-if you feel like you'll really get into photography, go for a more sturdy FM2.

Strength:

Easy of use (for me) Lightweight, and can still take great pictures with my 300mm lens. (that I use manually)
You can use a cable release!

Weakness:

Flash can't lock down
Rubber coating started to wear off, but that's my fault for getting a case that rubs hard on that area.

This camera is perfect for me, I sometimes wish I had a auto focus camera, but when I let my friend
borrow my 70-300mm lens with his F3 he sometimes get blurry pictures from the AF. So that
reminds me that I can fix that with the total manual controls. I have gotten use to the camera
controls and can take pictures very fast, without looking away, like some reviews said you have
to. So far the FM10 has accepted and produced great pictures with all Nikkor lenses I've put on
it. (if your wondering I haven't used anything but Nikkor) Like I said the flash can't lock down,
which would help in some of my shots, but I lived with it and isn't necessary for much that I do. I
haven't had any problems with the body at all, except for the fact that the serial number mostly
rubbed off the bottom, and the rubber coating started to wear off. The self timer is great for
allowing you to get in the picture, it gives you 10 seconds at the max. I really like the fact that the shutter speeds will go to 1/2000 sec. and that the ISO will go up to 3200. I recently took the camera on a Bahamas Cruise and it traveled nicely, and worked perfectly for all my pictures I
took. I used nine rolls of film and only had about twelve bad pictures, or under exposed pictures, but once again those are my fault. I will totally recommend this camera for school, for private, and a professional told me that she loves my camera, so, and for professional use!

Customer Service

I haven't needed it and I've had my camera for 3 years!

Strength:

Has all the essential features to learn SLR photography. Even mid-range cameras lack the DOF preview and multiple exposure capabilities that the FM10 has. And pseudo-mirror-lockup was a pleasant surprise! Metal lens mount is another plus. Everything (except the light meter) works without the batteries.

Weakness:

No TTL flash and motor-drive capabilities. The light meter tends to "stick" one way or the other, especially when you have weak batteries. Doesn't feel solid because of the plastic construction.

Can't ask for more in such a package, considering the PRICE. No point in comparing a bicycle to a Harley-Davidson, so any comparisons to even mid-range cameras like the F70 (N70) or Canon Rebel would not be fair. The FM10 would make an ideal backup camera too.

Customer Service

No chance to rate that. I have not had any problems with the FM10 for the past 3 years, even though I have travelled with it extensively - including on motorbikes to humid hillstations.

Strength:

It's a very good camera, easy to learn how to use it. very light weight. I like it very much. I had a hard time finding a camera, but I think I finally made the right choice!

Weakness:

It takes time to learn how to use it like most cameras. my biggest problem was learning how to rewind it, but now it is very easy.

I't is a very good camera! Just take time to learn how to use it. I'm very proud of my camera, and even more proud now that I know how to use it! If you have any questions, email me and I will try to help.

Strength:

-Total control on your photos
-Weight
-Price
-Self-timer (similar to mirror-lock-up)

Weakness:

-Slow shutter speed (1/2000 is the max)
-The light meter is not accurate enough.

-I bought this camera because I want a camera which I can control everything on my photos and which has a nice price, and Nikon FM10 suits my requirements. This is not a professional camera, therefore it is impossible to compare it to other great manual cameras. However, as a beginner, I'm pretty satisfied with this camera. My only complain is the build-in light meter in this camera is not accurate enough, and it can't take the measurement of light when the shutter is set to 1/2 or 1 sec. Except this problem, the depth-of-view preview and other features work well. The double exposure feature is very useful, I've used it to make some fantastic photos (http://www.heliocd.com/wt.html)!
-The self-timer is a very useful feature, it is similar to the mirror-lock-up funtion in cameras like Nikon F5. When you set the camera self-timing, it will flip the mirror which reflects the scenes so that you can see them through your view finder, then after a few seconds, it'll take the picture. This feature prevents the blurry photos you'll often get when you use a slow shutter. The price of the camera is worth because to have a mirror-lock-up function often costs you much much more.
-If you want to start trying to take photos controlled by your own hands instead of the camera, this is a fine camera. If you want to move to the next level, you can buy a more professional manual camera like Nikon FM2 like what I did.
