Strength:
Fast and sharp AF! Good viewfinder. Excellent build. Able to use AIS lenses. My SB20 flash works! This is the Nikon AF camera I should have purchased three years ago!
Weakness:
Can't think of any. I really don't like the rubber covering on the camera body. I bought an N-80 about two years ago, but could never warm up to it. The AF with only the central sensor being the cross type could not keep up with action, it couldn't meter my AIS lenses, and I wasn't thrilled with all the plastic. Mind you, the N-80 wasn't a bad camera, I just couldn't get into it. I had contemplated getting a Nikon dSLR, but, looking at the viewfinder in the D70 - no way. The prices on the F100 are reasonable right now, I picked up a mint for $600. Yes, I feel good about this camera! The 5 cross type AF sensors do the job. It is fast and sharp with the 28-105 and 70-210 f4 AF lenses. I mean sharp, no backfocus problems or anything of the sort. The viewfinder is bright and clear. Another bonus, I have an old SB20 flash, which, on the N-80, was inoperative in regards to the AF assist light - it had to use the awful white beam on the N-80. On the F100 the red AF assist lamp works like it should. The F100 takes its place along with my FE2 as my favorite Nikon cameras. Both metal bodies, both with nice big clear viewfinders, both able to use AIS lenses. The FE2 was my primary field camera, I tried to go AF with the N-80, couldn't get into it - the F100 will now be part of the arsenal. What kind of photography - ethnographic and natural landscape in Latin America. Customer Service N/A. Fortunately I have never had to use it. None This sturdy handy SLR is very intuitive and the pictures are outstanding! The autofocus is very quick and it just gets out of your way and lets you concentrate on the artistic aspects of the shot. It feels great in your hands. I have two and neither has ever let me down in any way or had the slightest malfunction. Customer Service Excellent with other Nikon products Similar Products Used: Nikon F5 and F6 |

Strength:
Major advantages F100 over N80: Metal alloy body vs. thin plastic shell, N80 is lighter that older N70 and N50, fast AF CAM1300 vs. CAM900 on N80, 5 AF sensors vs. 3 (less hunting in low light), wider exposure control and in 1/3 steps, no shutter lag, bright viewfinder 96% frame coverage, F100 can meter with Nikon manual AI and AIS lenses, speed 1/8000 and 5fps vs. 1/4000 2.5fps. Since recent price drop I value F100 at 5 stars, while back original cost was between $1000-1200, that was a lot of dough for a film camera without mirror lockup!
Weakness:
NO MIRROR LOCKUP - why??? I switched to F100 from N80, F100 was always my dream perfect camera I always wanted. I believe its the only one AF SLR with alloy body under a $1000. Professional caliber SLR that produces good results, I switched because of strenths below, mainly a build quality. If N80 was build like older Nikon bodies I could live with it. It had many pro features build into this thin plastic shell body, build quality did not reflect N80s pro like features and very good performance. Customer Service OK, had my 80-200mm lens cleaned. Looks better than when I first bought it. Similar Products Used: N70,N80, older Canon AF SLR |

Strength:
Easy to use.
Weakness:
none I purchased the Nikon F100 after I improved greatly in photography. My first SLR camera was a Minolta XTsi with two lenses. They were slow to focus and sometimes I had trouble getting the shots that I wanted. The viewfinder was dark, and the camera operation wasn't as smooth as I had like. After much thought and consideration (this isn't exactly a cheap investment), I decided to switch to Nikon because I had heard good things about the system. The F100 is the second tier Nikon autofocus SLR at that time next to the F5. F5, I felt, was way overpriced and had features most amateurs do not need (8 fps motor drive), although the color 3d matrix metering could be quite useful in difficult light conditions. It was bulky and heavy, although it was one of the best looking cameras I've ever seen. Did I mention the price? I even though about the N90s, but it was a old autofocus camera that didn't have some of the newer features that I thought was worth the extra money. I bought the Nikon F100 along with the 50mm f/1.8, 24mm f/2.8 (I highly recommend this wide angle lense), Tokina 28-70 f/2.6-2.8 (also highly recommend), and the Nikon SB-28 flash. After hundreds of rolls of film and one month in Asia, I have to say that it exceeded my highest expectations as a camera. It was very durable, responsive, and helped my photography tremendously. I felt that I could take the shots that I normally could not with my old camera. Focusing was accurate and fast, although the tracking would lose the subject at times. Shooting it at an airshow on Continuous autofocus--as long as you have one of the 5 autofocus brackets on the subject, it would continue tracking the subject if it roams around. The shutter is very quite and responsive. It fits well in my hand, and the controls are well placed. They are easy to adjust, and can be done w/out looking at the LCD. All the information is displayed inside the viewfinder, so you can get those once in a lifetime shots. Be sure to get a good camera bag to protect your investment. Take out the battery if you are not using it for extended periods of time. Again, I highly recommend the Tokina 28-70mm f/2.8 and 24mm f/2.8. These are two lenses I use the most in my travels. The camera doesn't include a strap, but I recommend the wide neoprene(sp?) Tamrac ones that helps distribute the weight during long hours of walking/hiking. I have not idea why the rating for "picture quality" is doing here in a review about cameras. The lense is what creates image quality. The F100 gets a 4 star in durability because it has a lot more plastic than the F5. but very durable for my needs. |

Excelllent meter Fast AF Great flash (especially fill) Solid construction Great ergonomics
Weakness:
None really. The F100 is truly a great camera. It has virtually all of the features you need, and some you don't, to help you make great photographs. Fast AF even with non AFS lenses like the 80-200 D tripod mt. version and the 20-35 zooms. Nice being able to use 1/3, 1/2 or full stops. I normally keep the MB-15 on for handling. Otherwise my small finger seems to hang off the bottom of the body. I was tempted to buy the F5. Despite what many people think, the F5 does have slightly faster AF and a quicker shutter release time lag. It is definitely the camera for fast action, which I don't shoot much of. However, the F100 is more than capable of keeping up with kids' sports and such. Most likely Nikon will be introducing a new high-end film based SLR soon incorporating their new multi-cam 2000 AF sensor (with 11 focus points) just introduced in the D2 digital SLR. The F100 and F5 AF systems are seven years old now and an upgrade is due. Customer Service Never had to use. Similar Products Used: N90s, 8008. |

3D matrix metering for dummies! Perfection nearly every time! Magnesium alloy body, waterproof from the top (too bad the lenses aren't) crystal prisim, I consider it one of the best cameras I own. And the main strength: TWO THIRDS THE FEATURES OF THE F5 AT HALF THE PRICE!
Weakness:
You can't do a doubble exposure on a self timer- I was trying to do some ghost shots with me in them for class and I just couldn't do it. My ex girlfriend once said "You love your camera more than you do me..." I replied "Yep" I hold behind that answer, and will do till the day I die. Customer Service Never dealt with them, but the nikon regional trainers rock! Photographic results. Feature set Ergonomics Held it's value- I actually got more for a trade-in than I paid due to stupid Australian retail mark-ups.
Weakness:
Dust getting into the back of the camera and interfering with the AF selector switch. I enjoyed using this camera, in the main and did get some very nice results with it. It feels great in the hand and is rock solid on a tripod even in strong wind. The metering was 90% accurate with a little bit of overexposure thrown in. This could be due to using a Sigma EX lens, though. I'll probably get very negative ratings for this, but, regrettably, I did find one unpleasant fault with this camera. I had problems with quite a coating of dust getting into the back during shooting. This happened to the extent that it interfered with the contacts for the AF area selector toggle which just stopped working. If I blew on them, it was fine, but try doing that with a roll of film in :) I am currently looking to get a film SLR again after going digital. The F100 has a great price and feature set, but I think the dust issue is something that would stop me from buying this camera again. Customer Service Nice on the phone, but didn't actually use. |
