Canon EOS 100/Elan 35mm SLRs

Canon EOS 100/Elan 35mm SLRs

DESCRIPTION

This was the world's first AF SLR camera which incorporated the concept of silent operation. The newly-developed silent mechanisms reduced film advance noise and rewind noise by one-eighth to one-half the level of previous models. The built-in flash's coverage adjusts automatically (auto zoom) to suit the lens focal length. Red-eye reduction, second-curtain sync, and flash exposure compensation were other flash features. The Quick Control Dial on the camera back also enables real-time exposure compensation adjustment while you looked through the viewfinder. It was a feature-laden, mid-class multi-mode 35mm AF SLR.

Strength:

Full set of advanced function with very light weight camera. This is perfect camera for people who learn the photography. Not for point shoot user.
Easy to control most of function. Internal flash light is good enough for emergency use. Eye sensor is one of most advenced function of this camera and it very usefull at field. good enough for speed of auto focusing.

Weakness:

Mode switch get brocken easily (small guide pin is easy to worn out). Feel likes toy with plastic finish.

Good enough for learn high tech with low cost but you will need a strong camera once you use it for a year.

Strength:

advanced functions, silence and price : for exemple, the "function similar" f801s was 850$.
It is the open door to canon USM lens system .

Weakness:

no grip, no additionnal battery pack.

I got it in 1992 and I still use it . It is a very interesting choice for the price. My shoots are not better with the F100 which costs 1550$ in france.

Strength:

Price/value, lightweight, versatility, remote control and ease of use.

Weakness:

Metering

I would recommend this camera for the beginners who are serious for photography. It has a lot of basic and advance features for many tasks. As long as you can measure things correctly, this camera will give you everything (well, almost) you need, and ease on your shoulder.

Customer Service

Never needed one.

Strength:

Quiet operation. Nice added features such as mirror lockup and depth of field preview.

Weakness:

It only has one focus and metering point that is the center. Depth of field preview is not manual and can't be used with some custom functions.

A good quality camera for the beginner to the intermediate. Could be a good backup for a pro. The quiet operation is good in the field for wildlife or for weddings.

Customer Service

Have never needed to use customer service. Equipment has always worked fine.

Strength:

This camera has been in my bag now since 1992 and has not given any trouble at all. It's quiet and reliable.

Weakness:

After 8 years of using this camera I just descovered its biggest weakness. The metering system/flash sync is not compatable with the Canon ring light flashes. In aperature priority mode, and while using the ring light flash, the camera will often pick a very slow shutter speed. This makes hand held macro photography a bit diffucult. It will flash sync at 1/125 in manuel mode so there is a work around. Also, this is not a cold weather camera.

Great camera for general photography, but weak in for macro. Being discontinued it is a bit hard to find accessories. If you find one at a good price, pick it up.

Strength:

Quietest AF SLR evermade.
Excellent performance.
Remarkably durable.

Weakness:

They don't make it anymore.
Um, er... noting else, really.

I've had one of these since it first came out. It's my favourite camera of all time. Mine has been dropped several times, been used on glaciers in Norway and in rainforest in Malaysia, in deserts in Egypt and in typical British weather (i.e. heavy rain). It has NEVER failed me once.
It has an excellent spec for discerning amateurs, and is a fine back-up body for pros, given all it offers. Sure, it doesn't have multi-point AF - who cares? There are very few photographic subjects or opportunities this camera can't deal with. The control layout is just right - almost everyting is just right. In an ideal world, it would have kept the separate DOF preview button, interchangeable backs and screens and illuminated LCD of the EOS 600/630, but then it would be the EOS 1 instead. I'll use mine until it falls apart, which is likely to be a long time yet.

Strength:

Lots of features. A good way to get into Canon EOS. I really like the single autofocus zone.

Weakness:

Didn't see anyone else mention this, but selection of remote release defaults back to std release after about 4-5 min. If your waiting on wildlife, this is not enough time. Really needs another form of remote release (other than RC-1).

Really good all-around camera.

Customer Service

None. Highly reliable.

Strength:

1. Quietness; 2. Ease of use; 3. Viewfinder info; 4. Size for what you get. 5.; 6.; The list goes on. The EOS100 was my first AF camera and I never realised what anoustanding camera it is until I compared it to my other cameras.

Weakness:

Occasionally the flash lets you down, but really seldom.

Really good camera for both entry level and intermediate photographers. With the right lenses, this could even go as far as a more serious user. Out-of-Production gives the overall a four.

Customer Service

Never needed it but Canon's response to other issues is fantastic.
