Canon EOS 100/Elan 35mm SLRs

Canon EOS 100/Elan 35mm SLRs

DESCRIPTION

This was the world's first AF SLR camera which incorporated the concept of silent operation. The newly-developed silent mechanisms reduced film advance noise and rewind noise by one-eighth to one-half the level of previous models. The built-in flash's coverage adjusts automatically (auto zoom) to suit the lens focal length. Red-eye reduction, second-curtain sync, and flash exposure compensation were other flash features. The Quick Control Dial on the camera back also enables real-time exposure compensation adjustment while you looked through the viewfinder. It was a feature-laden, mid-class multi-mode 35mm AF SLR.

Strength:

Silent Beltdrive Autozoom Flash (28-80mm) Single cross-type focusing point (fast!)

Weakness:

AA grip would be nice.

Probably one of the hidden jewels in the used Canon market (along with the EOS RT). Since it has a belt drive it is as silent as a church mouse. Also since it has only one focusing point (an excellent cross type) it is faster on the draw since it doesn't have to decide on a focusing point. It focuses faster than my Elan IIe especially at night! But the icing on the cake is the Auto-Zoom flashhead which focuses power to the (lens) focal length in use, instead of shooting a wide spread that lights up everything in sight (yikes!).

Customer Service

Never needed as Canon products (at least used to be) very well made. The saying is true, "They don't make 'em like this anymore". Every Canon fan should have one in their closet (at least to show the grandkids). ;-)

Strength:

great low-light AF quite bright viewfinder fast AF 6,5% partial metering quick control dial on the back

Weakness:

B-type Canon body (no E-TTL or FP high speed sync) sticky shutter problem (though not experienced one myself) no socket for wired remote release (only IR receiver) no exposure scale in M mode (only +/-) no Battery-pack was ever made for it !!! :o(

Simply a great camera. It has everything I need for my style of photography, and I think for everyone's style of photography... Strength:

Better performance in low light condition More powerfull flass

Weakness:

Less metering segment compared to Elan 7 No vertical grip

I've just purchase EOS Elan view month ago. I buy this because my Elan 7 perform bad in low light condition. This camera offer almost the same feature as Elan 7, so I don't need to make adjustment in my photography style.

Strength:

Respectably fast AF Reliable Cheap to buy 2nd hand Silent operation Unobtrusive AF assist light (compared with EOS30/300) Intuitive handling Mirror pre-fire Built-in flash exposure compensation

Weakness:

Creaky top plate Pop-up flash doesn't shut 100% No AA battery grip (Optional GR70 grip improves handling but wobbly however much I tighten it) Limited custom functions selections comparing with EOS10

Great camera now available cheaply. Feature-packed and great value for money when it was first introduced. Still has plenty to offer. Its weaknesses are very much outweighed by its numerous strengths.

Strength:

Simple to use built tough.

Weakness:

I've taken so many rolls of film with if there is any I've gotten use to them.

I've owned this camera since 1991 when my first son was born, I traded my AE-1 in on it, and I haven't regretted. This camera has been to the jungles of S. America to the plains of S.Africa. Taking roll after roll of film. I've been surfing to possibly upgraded and I haven't been impressed with some of the reviews on Canons new equipment. I purchased a EOS 55 last year and I find myself reaching for the elan first. This is a great camera for anyone. If you come across a used one don't be afraid to purchase it.

Customer Service

Within the first month the flash quite working, I sent back to Canon USA and it was back within 7 days, None since then.

Weakness:

Not a weakness, but I miss my FTb light meter!

When my FTb was damaged I decided to get a semi-professional automatic camera. I told the guy what I'd use it for, and he recommended the Elan. I love him for it! I have been so happy with this camera. It's relatively light, comfortable to handle and has many features. I can't fault it.

Customer Service

Was fully serviced by an agent before I purchased it. Canon Rep was kind and helpful.

Strength:

solid body work. great in the worst of rain. shoots great slides. remains clean after long treks on the coast.

Weakness:

none to speak of.

Fellow Phans, I have enjoyed the feeling of knowing that i can take this EOS 100 body anywhere. I have used in remotely in some down and dirty places and although the camera has had a rough ride, it remains 100% reliable. Photo-journalism pays it's price, which is why i'd like to comment on EOS 100. It works wonders in the field.

Strength:

Good AF. Intuitive controls. Few, but well chosen custom functions. Good metering.

Weakness:

No vertical battery-grip available for this model.

"I figure I might as well buy a real camera i I''m going to try taking up photography". I figured right. This camera is great, even with the relatively steep learning curve you get starting out with a feature-rich SLR like this one. The controls are very intuitive. I plowed through the manual once and I''ve never used it since. AF is fast and accurate, even in poor light. The body''s weight is pretty low and it doesn''t gobble batteries (I haven''t used the blitz a lot so I don''t know how much this drains). The features and modes are very configurable, you''ve got everything from full-auto to full-manual operation. One feature that I''ve found especially usefull when shooting outdoors is the DEP-mode. It also has a very handy infrared shutter release gadget, as opposed to cable-release. All in all a very good camera. If you find a used one (it''s no longer in production) that''s not worn out, buy it!

Customer Service

Never needed it.

Strength:

Comfortable design, solid build, lots of creative control options.

Weakness:

Time out feature on remote control

I have been nothing but pleased with the performance of this body, and when looking for a second body in the Canon line, I ended up deciding a used Elan was the way to go. I don''t shoot sports, or situations that require high fps, and the creative controls and rugged design seem more than adequate for anyone outside of the pro ranks. I would also add that the two bodies I have, (both US Elan''s), do have spot metering, though it is only in the center.

Customer Service

no need in 10 years.
